Chapter 1672: Chapter 1646: Wherever the Eye Gazes, There Lies Eternity: Your Father Has Found Another Woman
When Joseph Lancaster came back with his secretary, it was almost noon. Since his son’s girlfriend was visiting for the first time, Lorelei Howard had gone to the store the day before and bought a lot of ingredients.
Braised carp, clear-broth chicken, boiled pork with blood sausage, and some stir-fries… the whole table was packed.
Secretary Vesper was a college graduate, and she’d been accompanying Joseph on business trips, negotiating deals, so of course there was nothing to criticize about her social manners. She was just as polite at the table, thanking Lorelei every time she picked food for her.
The “new bride” coming through the door made the old master and the eldest branch very happy. Only Eva Hayes kept secretly curling her lip.
Feeling just as upset was Violet Zimmerman. Watching her younger brother-in-law carefully tending to his “girlfriend,” she felt extremely sour inside. She hurriedly wolfed down a bowl of rice, then put her chopsticks down.
“Grandpa, Dad, Mom, Second Uncle, Second Aunt, you all take your time eating. I’m going back to feed Robert now.”
“Mm, go on, don’t let the child go hungry.”
Seeing Violet stand up, Vesper said politely, “Eldest Sister-in-law, take care.”
“Mm.” Violet forced a little tug at the corner of her lips, and her steps were brisk as she left.
“Here, Vesper, have a piece of chicken, it’s free-range, the texture’s great!” Lorelei’s warm voice came from behind. Violet bit her lip, and as soon as she stepped out the door she broke into a trot toward her own place.
For some reason, the grievance in her chest was fierce, and she couldn’t help it—tears started spilling out.
Everyone in the Lancaster Family was gathered in the old master’s room entertaining the “new bride.” Only Violet was out in the courtyard, running while wiping her tears. Not until she reached the door of her own residence did she stop, wipe her face, take a deep breath, and pull the door open.
“Madam, you’re back?” Sister Zhang came over respectfully, and immediately noticed something was wrong with Violet. Concerned, she asked, “Madam, why are your eyes red? Did something get into them? I’ll get you some erythromycin ointment.”
“No need, some sand blew in on the way back, it’s fine now.” Violet tossed off the explanation, changed into slippers and handed her cotton coat to Sister Zhang, then took Robert Lancaster from another servant and quickly headed toward the stairs.
Watching Violet’s anxious figure, Sister Zhang turned back in puzzlement. What was wrong with Madam? Did sand get into both eyes?
Violet carried her son back to the bedroom and sat down on the bed. She had already nursed the little fellow before going to lunch.
The little guy saw his mother, waved his tiny hands, and babbled non-stop.
Robert Lancaster was already past five months old, and his facial features were gradually becoming more defined. Although he looked like Daxton Lancaster, Violet felt her son resembled her younger brother-in-law more—especially that little mouth, so thin; one look and you’d know he’d grow up to be a man short on feelings.
Seeing the little fellow smile at her, Violet said resentfully, “You can still smile? Your dad’s already found himself another woman. Just wait—once they have their own child, we’ll see if he still buys you toys!”
“Oh, oh oh…” Hearing his mother talk to him, Robert laughed even harder.
After lunch, the old master had Vesper brought into the inner sitting room. Atlas Lancaster and his three sons all returned to their own quarters; only Eva Hayes stayed.
Vesper was pretty, and her speech was elegant and polite—very much to Bodhi Lancaster and his wife’s liking. Especially Lorelei, who was practically over the moon about this future daughter-in-law.
She kept asking Vesper this and that, almost digging all the way through her family’s eighteen generations.
Vesper patiently answered everything. When Eva heard that Vesper’s father was an ordinary worker and her mother didn’t work at all, she immediately curled her lip in disdain and muttered under her breath, “And here I was thinking she was some debutante from a big family. Turns out she’s just from an average household, not even as well-off as Michael’s girlfriend’s family.”
