Mr. CEO's Substitute Bride
Chapter 1652 - 1632: Wherever My Gaze Falls, It Means Forever—All I Want Is for You to Belong to Me
Joseph Lancaster glanced back through the rearview mirror. The inside of the car was quite dark, and he couldn’t make out Lucy Zimmerman’s expression, but Joseph knew that this tiger girl was still angry.
A hint of sarcasm curled at his lips as Joseph Lancaster spoke slowly, "It’s already so late, it would be impolite to go directly to your home. I plan to visit your sister-in-law’s mother’s house first, and then..."
"Oh, Joseph! So that’s what you were thinking!" Before Joseph Lancaster could finish, Lucy Zimmerman leaned over again, clinging to the passenger seat’s backrest, her eyes gleaming. "Why didn’t you say so earlier, I’ve been angry for ages!"
In the driver’s seat, Joseph Lancaster discreetly scoffed.
The black Hongqi stopped right in front of Violet Zimmerman’s family’s door. Before Joseph Lancaster could turn off the engine, Lucy Zimmerman jumped out from the back seat and rushed toward the door, pounding on it with force, shouting, "Aunty! Uncle! Hurry and open the door. Look who’s here!"
"Coming, coming, it’s late at night, keep your voice down or the neighbors will be awakened!" Aria Williams complained impatiently as she walked over and opened the door, only to be stunned by the sight of the two at the doorstep.
"Lucy? Joseph... what are you two doing so late..."
"Aunty, here’s what happened!" Lucy Zimmerman rushed to explain, while Joseph Lancaster graciously curled his lips, saying, "I came to fetch your sister-in-law and Robert."
...
"Joseph, didn’t you say you were coming for a marriage proposal?" Lucy Zimmerman turned around, asking incredulously. When she realized she’d been deceived, her face immediately changed, and she raised a hand to strike Joseph Lancaster.
"You scoundrel, hooligan, tricked me into leading the way for you..."
"Lucy, stop fooling around!"
Aria Williams snapped icily, and before Lucy Zimmerman’s hand could land on Joseph Lancaster, her wrist was tightly clamped.
Joseph Lancaster’s phoenix eyes glinted with a distinct chill. Though he didn’t say anything, Aria Williams could tell that he was angry.
"Lucy, come here!" Aria Williams scolded again, and Joseph Lancaster let go of her hand, tossing Lucy Zimmerman aside before striding into the house.
Violet Zimmerman had already packed her bag, placing it by her feet as she sat on the edge of the kang, cradling the child. She was even wearing her coat.
Gently patting the already sleeping Robert Lancaster, her expression was not good.
The two brothers and sisters-in-law were in their mother’s room, none looking in a pleasant mood after the unpleasant dinner.
After Joseph Lancaster walked in, he nodded symbolically to the group, with no intention of sitting down.
"Let’s go, sister-in-law."
From everyone’s expressions, it wasn’t hard to see that something unhappy had happened. Otherwise, his sister-in-law wouldn’t have called this late to have him come over and pick her up.
"Joseph? Why did you come? Where’s your brother?"
Dylan Zimmerman stood up, puzzled, and instinctively his two sons and daughters-in-law stood up as well.
Joseph Lancaster managed a brief smile, "My brother couldn’t make it, so he asked me to bring sister-in-law back."
Violet Zimmerman was already standing with the child in her arms, supporting Robert Lancaster with one hand, reaching for the bag at her feet with the other.
"I’ll take it." Joseph Lancaster walked over and picked up the bag.
"Joseph, it’s getting late, the road is not easy to navigate. Why not stay the night and drive back tomorrow during the day?"
Dylan Zimmerman extended a courteous offer, looking somewhat embarrassed; after all, their daughter had called so late to her in-laws... it was difficult not to wonder.
"No need, sister-in-law didn’t give prior notice, that’s already a disturbance; we’ll head back now." Joseph Lancaster spoke politely, but everyone with sharp ears understood his implication.
Knox Zimmerman glared unhappily at his wife, Eleanor Duncan turned her face defiantly away.
Gideon Zimmerman’s expression was also tense. Although his sister Violet Zimmerman was married into the Lancaster Family, she was still his sister. Coming back to her mother’s home for less than a day and already calling her in-laws to fetch her... such matters were somewhat unreasonable.
"Joseph, don’t misunderstand, we just didn’t want Violet and Daxton to be at odds, that’s why..." Aria Williams awkwardly explained.
Joseph Lancaster nodded slightly, "Don’t worry, Auntie; there are no strangers causing disturbance; brother and sister-in-law still have a very good relationship."
Hearing this, Aria Williams was even more uneasy and quickly apologized, "Joseph, please convey to your parents, it’s my oversight that caused friction between Daxton and Violet..."
"Hmph!" Lucy Zimmerman, leaning against the door, folded her arms in discontent, snorting.
"No need, irrelevant people are not our concern at the Lancaster Family."
