Chapter 580: Chapter 569: Epilogue (7)
Fatty asked, “Dylan, have you ever been to the mountains?”
Dylan shook his head. “Not yet. My mommy said that in a year or two, she’s going to take us to experience what life is like for children in the mountains. She’s already gathered all the clothes Elmer and I have outgrown to donate. Oh, and Dorothy’s old clothes, too. It would be a shame to throw them away.”
Dorothy Ellsworth clapped her hands. “Yeah! In the mountains, a lot of kids our age don’t have clothes to wear, and they still have to wear thin shoes in the winter. Some places are really struggling.”
Hearing this, Fatty said, “Then I’m going to tell my mom when I get home. She always throws away the clothes I don’t wear anymore, and they’re still pretty new.”
“You should.”
The kids played in the living room for quite a while. Just then, the captain of the Men in Black rushed in. Seeing Fatty, he yelled, “Fatty, your parents are going crazy looking for you! They even called the police and said you were missing.”
Dylan Grant stood up. “Fatty, you should head back. Go talk things out with your mom and dad.”
Fatty nodded and walked out of the Grant residence.
When he reached his front door, he saw his mother frantically making phone calls, trying to find him, while his father sat there in silence. Fatty called out, “Mom! Dad!”
Fatty’s mother put down the phone, immediately jumping to her feet and running over. “You little brat, where have you been? Do you have any idea what time it is?”
Fatty said sullenly, “I went to Dylan Grant’s house. You and Dad are always fighting, right? I left so you two could really go at it.”
Fatty’s mother was suddenly speechless.
“Son, come here,” Fatty’s father said.
Fatty ran to his side and said, “Dad, I went to your boss’s house. It’s so, so big! And Dylan’s mom is really gentle. She never hits him or his brother, and she never yells at them. I’m so jealous.”
Fatty’s father hugged him. “From now on, I won’t hit you or scold you either, as long as you’re a good boy.”
“Honestly, I don’t want to see you two argue. If you really don’t want to be together anymore, Mom, Dad, can you just get a divorce? I don’t want this to scar me. I can just live with Grandma.”
Fatty’s mother’s face turned ashen. “Mom and Dad aren’t getting a divorce. From now on, our family will live together happily.”
Although Fatty’s father didn’t speak, he tacitly agreed with her words.
「The next day at school.」
The whole class was present.
The teacher said with a beaming smile, “Children, when we watch TV, we see a lot of commercials, don’t we?”
“Yes!” the children answered in unison.
“Well, for this class, I want each of you to think of the funniest advertising slogan you can. This will be good practice for your speaking skills and imagination. Everyone, think about the most interesting ad slogan you’ve ever seen. In a little while, I’ll have you recite them for the class.”
“Okay!” came another resounding, unified cry.
Half an hour later, the teacher began, “Alright, I’m going to start calling on you. Recite the slogan you came up with for everyone. Fatty, you first.”
Fatty scratched his head. “Teacher, there’s a barbershop near my old home, and its sign says this: ‘Don’t think you’re losing your hair; you’re actually gaining face.'”
“Mm, that’s pretty good. Sit down. Elmer, you’re next.”
“I saw it at the bottom of a magazine. It was a rent-a-boyfriend ad. It said: ‘For rent! Not 998 dollars, not 888 dollars, and not even 668 dollars! Right now, just 18 dollars! That’s right, 18 dollars to take a real man home! He can give you kisses and go BANG BANG BANG. For 18 dollars, it’s a steal, not a scam! For 18 dollars, you can take him home to bed! 18 dollars can’t buy you a car or a house, but it can let you feel like a bride for a day! 18 dollars won’t get you to Zelkova or Breyfall, but you can have a stud to admire all you want! Don’t doubt your eyes, it’s first come, first served. Women under 22 get priority. Rent now and you can even enjoy the government’s ‘Hunks to the ‘Burbs’ subsidy (an 8 dollar rebate)! Don’t just be tempted, take action! If you feel the urge, act on it now!'”
After listening, the teacher waved her hand. “Sit down. Elmer, it’s pretty impressive that you memorized such a long passage. Still, that man for rent must be incredibly ugly to be so cheap.”
“…”
After school, Fatty made a point to walk over to Dylan Grant. “Dylan,” he said, “after I talked to my mom and dad last night, we all had breakfast together this morning.”
Dorothy Ellsworth looked a little confused. “But… moms and dads always eat breakfast together in the morning.”
“But in my family, my dad always left for work really early. It was always just me and my mom eating together in the morning.”
“Oh, no wonder. Well, Fatty, a child is the bond between parents. You have to help your mom and dad fix their relationship.”
Fatty nodded vigorously. “Absolutely.”
Everyone left school in high spirits.
Today, Chloe Marshall didn’t come to pick up Dorothy Ellsworth, so Dorothy rode home to the luxury apartment complex with the two boys in Nora Ainsworth’s car.
When Dorothy Ellsworth got home, she asked the butler, “Where’s Mommy?”
“The Madam is resting in her room. Your daddy is home as well.”
With her backpack still on, Dorothy Ellsworth dashed into the living room.
“Daddy! Mommy! I’m home!”
Usually, her mommy’s voice would call back, but today, no one answered.
Dorothy Ellsworth thought this was very strange.
She raced up the stairs and pushed open her mommy and daddy’s bedroom door to find her mommy lying on the bed, her eyes tightly shut, while her daddy sat beside her, holding her hand.
“Daddy, is Mommy asleep?”
Ethan Ellsworth shushed her and said softly, “Dorothy, you’re home from school. Are you hungry?”
Dorothy Ellsworth nodded.
Ethan Ellsworth walked over and picked her up. “Come on, let’s go downstairs and get something to eat. Mommy just fell asleep, so let’s not wake her.”
Dorothy Ellsworth nodded obediently. “Okay. Daddy, I want to eat stir-fried rice cakes.”
“That’s easy. Let’s go.”
The father and daughter went downstairs, and before long, a plate of stir-fried rice cakes was brought out from the kitchen. As she ate, Dorothy leaned over the dining table and asked, “Daddy, can we go for a walk with Mommy later?”
For the first time, Ethan Ellsworth looked troubled. He spoke gently to Dorothy, “Mommy has a baby in her tummy right now, and she’s not feeling well at all today. Let’s not go for a walk today, okay?”
“Daddy, what’s wrong with Mommy?”
Ethan Ellsworth looked at her with a grave expression. “Mommy’s stomach was hurting a lot. We just got back from the hospital this afternoon.”
“Then let’s not go. If Mommy’s tummy hurts, I’ll go upstairs and rub it for her. That will make it better.”
Ethan Ellsworth nodded. After she finished eating, he took Dorothy into the bedroom.
Chloe Marshall was awake now, her face extremely pale. Seeing Dorothy, she called out, “Come here to Mommy.”
Dorothy went to her. “Mommy, what’s wrong? Why is your face so white? Daddy said you’re not feeling well. Dorothy will rub your tummy for you, and it’ll get better.”
She reached out and placed her hand on Chloe Marshall’s lower abdomen, rubbing it gently.
