Married the Sick Uncle – Just Waiting to Inherit His Fortune
Chapter 429: I Haven’t Offended You, Have I?
Anne Sutton had thought he, like her, would dislike this kind of scene.
But to her surprise, Nathan Fawcett seemed to be enjoying himself. His cold gaze landed on Charles Prescott as he said, "You remember all the things you did to Anne back when you thought I was gone, don’t you?"
It had been the old man’s idea for Charles Prescott to leave the Fawcett Group.
He had resigned of his own accord.
But as for Nathan Fawcett’s score with him...
He still hadn’t properly taught the man a lesson!
He hadn’t gotten his revenge, which left a bad taste in his mouth.
Now that Caleb Summers had brought the man here, he wasn’t about to miss this opportunity.
Even though he had mellowed considerably in recent years, he was still Nathan Fawcett—the same man from back then, the man who made anyone who crossed him scared to death.
Caleb Summers’ brand of cruelty was nothing compared to Nathan Fawcett’s.
Sitting right beside Nathan Fawcett, Anne Sutton could feel a chill emanate from him.
She looked at Nathan Fawcett. Being so close, she felt the chill herself.
’He seems...’
’like he’s actually enjoying this!’
Charles Prescott looked at Nathan Fawcett and lowered his head. "I’m sorry, Mr. Fawcett."
He knew he was in no position to stand up to Nathan Fawcett now.
Even Mia Shaw could walk all over him these days, to say nothing of anyone else.
He had actually grown accustomed to situations like this!
Nathan Fawcett stared at him. "What are you apologizing to me for? If you’re going to apologize, apologize to Anne. After everything you did to her... I think you owe her a proper apology!"
Charles Prescott’s gaze fell on Anne Sutton. He looked at her and said, "I’m sorry."
The words had barely left his mouth when Caleb Summers burst out laughing. "You think a simple ’I’m sorry’ is enough? Why don’t you get on your knees for my sister-in-law? Charles Prescott, you should take a good look at yourself. Are you even qualified to be standing while you speak to her?"
Charles Prescott looked at Anne Sutton. He admitted he had truly wronged her.
But Caleb Summers’ attitude made him extremely uncomfortable.
Anne sat beside Nathan Fawcett, watching as the others, seeing Charles Prescott’s reluctance to kneel, began pouring wine over his head. The sight of a group of people ganging up to bully one person made Anne feel physically ill.
Anne disliked these kinds of situations; she could never bring herself to do something like this.
Seeing that they were all enjoying themselves, she turned to Nathan Fawcett and said, "I’m going to go check on Ian."
With that, she stood up and left the room.
She stepped out and saw Ian playing with another child she didn’t recognize. Anne didn’t rush over to them.
...
’Still... we were supposed to be here for Caleb Summers’ birthday. I never expected to walk into a scene like this.’ The whole thing left her feeling unsettled.
Anne thought to herself, ’I guess I’m just too used to being a normal person...’
’Using your power to humiliate someone like that... I just can’t do it.’
’More than anyone, I wanted Charles Prescott to get what he deserved. Just seeing his current downfall is satisfying enough for me.’
’But watching them humiliate him like this... I really don’t want any part in it.’
’After all, I used to hate Charles Prescott more than anyone. Now, I’m terrified of becoming just like him—like the man he used to be, who used what little power he had to bully others.’
’Respect is a basic quality everyone should have.’
...
Soon, Nathan Fawcett came out as well.
He saw Anne standing by the door and walked over to her side. Looking at her, he asked, "What’s wrong? You’re not happy?"
Anne looked at Nathan Fawcett. "I’m fine. Just worried about Ian."
"..." Nathan Fawcett gazed at her. "What is it? You think they went too far?"
Anne met his gaze. "Don’t you?"
"If they were doing this to someone who’s been good to you, then of course it would be too much," Nathan said. "But Charles Prescott stopped acting like a human being a long time ago. Whatever happens to him, he deserves it!"
Hearing this, Anne looked at the man before her. "Maybe so. I just don’t like handling things this way."
’Nathan used to be terrifying; that’s why so many people were afraid of him. Back then, she had been, too.’
Nathan Fawcett looked at Anne. "Anne, I despise Charles Prescott. When I think about what he did in the past, I want to kill him."
"..." His tone was chillingly calm as he said it. He stood right in front of her, and Anne’s heart trembled.
She stared at him. Seeing her pale face, Nathan said, "The old Nathan Fawcett would have done it. But now... I’m changing. I don’t want to be someone you hate, someone you’re afraid of."
’So...’
’that’s why he hasn’t been harder on Charles Prescott most of the time.’
...
Anne looked at the man before her and said, "Once you guys have had your fun, just let him go. I don’t want to see him."
Hearing her, Nathan nodded. "Alright."
Just then, someone came in.
It was Mia Shaw. Since she had arrived with Vic, no one stopped her.
She walked up to Anne Sutton. "Is Charles Prescott here?"
Anne heard her but didn’t say a word. ’I don’t owe her anything, and that was an incredibly rude way to ask.’
Mia Shaw glanced at Anne Sutton and Nathan Fawcett standing nearby, then addressed Nathan. "President Fawcett, hello. I’m here to pick up Charles Prescott."
"..." Nathan didn’t answer.
Mia Shaw glanced toward the room, pushed the door open, and went inside.
Caleb Summers and a few of his friends were sitting on the sofa. Since both Nathan and Anne had stepped out, they weren’t sure what to do, so they had just kept Charles Prescott there pouring their drinks.
Mia Shaw walked in and saw Charles Prescott waiting on them. "What are you doing here?"
She had rushed right over after Henry Underwood told her that Caleb Summers had taken Charles.
’She knew they wouldn’t have taken Charles for any good reason!’
Mia Shaw went to Charles Prescott’s side. "You’re not even answering my calls. Didn’t we say we were having dinner together tonight? And look at you, running off to have fun here!"
After saying her piece, she looked at Caleb Summers. "President Summers, I’ll be taking him now. Sorry for the trouble."
With that, she made to leave with Charles Prescott.
Caleb Summers spoke up. "It’s my birthday. I invited him to hang out. What’s this all about, Miss Shaw? You make it sound like we bullied him or something. What, does Caleb Summers have so little pull that I can’t even invite your husband to come have some fun?"
Mia Shaw: "..."
’She glanced at Charles’s condition. Anyone with eyes could see they were bullying him!’
’And Caleb Summers had the gall to lie right to her face!’
Mia Shaw said, "President Summers, Charles Prescott has already left the Fawcett Group. The past is in the past. There’s no need for you all to keep targeting him like this, is there?"
"..." Caleb Summers stared at Mia Shaw and gave a slight smirk. "We’re targeting him? How exactly are we targeting him? Aren’t you the one who’s really targeting him? Miss Shaw, you’re out with other men every day, yet you still call Charles Prescott your husband. Compared to us, I’d say you’re the one going too far. You’ve done plenty of bullying yourself, so what are you doing here playing the good guy?"
Mia Shaw: "..."
’She stared at Caleb Summers, shocked that he was such a gossip. He knew everything!’
She finally said, "Caleb Summers, I’ve never done anything to you, have I?"
