Married the Sick Uncle – Just Waiting to Inherit His Fortune
Chapter 423: All for Nothing
What David Hayes had done was far worse than he let on.
Hearing this, Sharon Sutton said to Anne Sutton, "You knew all along!"
"I didn’t dare tell you while you were pregnant."
Sharon Sutton said, "He’s really gone too far!"
Anne Sutton said, "Let’s leave it at that. You’ve been feeling better these past couple of days. You can be discharged from the hospital."
Seeing that her spirits had lifted, Anne Sutton was relieved.
The truth about Lucy Todd and David Hayes was cruel, but telling Sharon Sutton wasn’t a bad thing. At the very least, it would allow her to see David Hayes for who he truly was.
At least the hatred could fuel her will to live.
When Anne Sutton had seen her a few days prior, she was genuinely afraid Sharon wouldn’t pull through.
...
That afternoon, Anne Sutton took Sharon Sutton home.
Mrs. Sutton was packing.
She still had a lot to do in Veridia, and her phone hadn’t stopped ringing for the past two days.
Sharon Sutton was going back with them.
Their flight was booked for early the next morning.
Anne Sutton sat on the sofa and texted Nathan Fawcett, "We’ll be there tomorrow morning."
Nathan Fawcett replied, "Do you want me to come pick you up?"
"Don’t you have anything better to do?" Anne Sutton laughed. "Making a special trip all the way here... won’t you be tired? It’s fine! We can get there on our own."
Nathan Fawcett wrote, "Then I’ll pick you up at the airport tomorrow."
"If you’re busy, just focus on your work! It’s not like I don’t know my way around."
"I want to see you."
"..." That left Anne Sutton at a loss for words.
She looked at Nathan Fawcett’s message, a helpless smile playing on her lips. She typed, "How’s Ian?"
"The second I say I miss you, you bring up Ian. What, am I not worth thinking about?"
"I just miss my son. Why would I have time to think about you?"
"..." Nathan Fawcett replied with an ellipsis and said no more.
...
Anne Sutton had just sat down when her phone rang. It was David Hayes.
Anne Sutton didn’t recognize the number, so she answered. She heard David Hayes’s voice, "Is Sharon out of the hospital? Is she any better? I want to come see her."
Anne Sutton said, "She’s doing just fine as long as you stay away!"
"Didn’t you say we could talk about the divorce once she was feeling better?"
Anne Sutton wasn’t a fool. She knew he was just using the divorce as a pretext; he didn’t actually want one, he just wanted an excuse to see Sharon again.
Thinking of Sharon’s current state, Anne Sutton told David Hayes, "I’ve hired a lawyer for her. The lawyer will contact you about any further matters."
"..." David Hayes frowned. "So you’re saying I can’t see her anymore?"
"Is there any need to?" Anne Sutton said. "When you could see her every day, you were ’working overtime’ or with other women! Now that you’re getting a divorce, you’re suddenly against it! Men are the absolute worst!"
David Hayes said, "No matter what, I want to see Sharon just once."
"Not happening," Anne Sutton said. "You won’t be able to reach her. I already had her block you."
"..." The words had barely left Anne Sutton’s mouth when Sharon Sutton walked in.
Seeing her, Anne Sutton quickly hung up. "Weren’t you resting? What are you doing here?"
Sharon Sutton said, "I want to go see David Hayes."
’...’ ’Anne had just finished laying down the law with David Hayes.’
’This felt like a slap in the face.’
But Anne also knew that Sharon only wanted to see David Hayes because she was too indignant to let it go.
Anne Sutton asked, "Do you have to see him right now?"
"I can’t just leave like this. I’d feel too resentful."
"..." Anne Sutton said, "If you really want to see him, I can have him come here."
"I want to go over and pack my things." She still hadn’t been back to the place she used to live, not even once.
Anne Sutton looked at her, thought for a moment, and said, "Okay, I’ll go with you."
She picked up her phone and called David Hayes, telling him to meet them at the home he and Sharon used to share.
Then she went with Sharon to get her things.
Sharon was inside, packing.
This place held too many of her memories with David Hayes.
They had bought so many things for it together.
’Back then, she had thought they had a home! They could finally be together!’
’She had even imagined what it would be like for the three of them to live here after their child was born. While she was pregnant, she’d bought so many things for the baby.’
’But now...’
’It was all in the past!’
’It had all come to nothing.’
’Even the child she’d carried for nearly ten months was gone.’
...
Anne Sutton stood in the doorway and saw her in the bedroom. As Sharon packed, she began to cry.
’This is why I didn’t want her to come!’
Just then, David Hayes arrived.
And with him were his parents.
David Hayes saw Anne Sutton. "Where’s Sharon?"
Before Anne could speak, Sharon walked out. "I’m right here."
She had almost finished packing.
David Hayes saw her and asked, "Sharon, how are you feeling? Are you all better?"
Sharon Sutton gave him an icy look, her eyes devoid of warmth. "Do you think I could possibly be okay?"
Seeing her speak to him this way, David Hayes sounded helpless. "Don’t be angry with me about what happened. It’s not worth getting upset over me. I know I was wrong! Sharon, I’m so sorry."
Anne Sutton stood to the side. For safety, she’d had Noah Linden arrange for a few bodyguards to be present before she came.
And it was because of them that the Hayes family was much more subdued.
Even Mrs. Hayes, seeing the burly men standing in the house, didn’t dare to speak. She just hid behind her husband.
’When dealing with people like this, you really had to take a strong stance.’
Sharon Sutton looked at David Hayes. "Lucy Todd isn’t with you today."
"..." David Hayes stiffened, then played dumb. "What are you talking about? I haven’t been in touch with her for a long time."
"I doubt that," Sharon Sutton said. "She came to the hospital looking for me just a few days ago!"
"..." Anne stood to the side, hands in her pockets, trying her best to fade into the background.
Hearing this, David Hayes said, "That was all a misunderstanding! Sharon, things between her and me ended a long time ago!"
When Sharon Sutton heard him say it had ended long ago, she laughed. "It doesn’t matter anymore! In any case, you can be with her openly now! Here are the divorce papers. Take a look. We’ll sell the house and split the money, fifty-fifty."
"Wait..." Mrs. Hayes started to rush forward at the mention of this, but a bodyguard blocked her way.
She could only shout from where she stood, "How can you sell this house!"
’They had been thinking that since David couldn’t afford the mortgage on his other place, they could move in here.’
’After all, Sharon didn’t want to live with them anyway.’
’David Hayes was the one who bought the house in the first place.’
’Although Sharon had contributed some money, they had paid the larger share!’
Sharon Sutton said, "It’s my house. I’ll sell it if I want to."
The deed had both her and David Hayes’s names on it.
And besides, she had paid for part of it!
’So why shouldn’t I be able to sell it?’
Mrs. Hayes said, "It’s better to keep the house! Sharon, you’ll take a huge loss if you sell now. Don’t you know the market has dropped recently?"
