’If I hadn’t pulled strings to get him that promotion, there’s no way he could have afforded that house.’

’Buying it is one thing, but he even dared to let his mistress move in!’

’How fucking shameless!’

Anne Sutton had never seen such a shameless man!

The moment he got a little status, he started looking down on Sharon Sutton.

He’d even forgotten that he owed his current success all to Sharon.

David Hayes looked at Anne Sutton. "How can you be so cruel?"

"Me, cruel?" Anne Sutton stared at the man. "You’re getting what you deserve!"

"..."

When Mrs. Hayes heard that her grandson was gone and that now even her son’s job was lost, she was furious. She said to Anne Sutton, "You Suttons are truly heartless! No matter what, our David is married to Sharon! And now you’re taking away his job! They’re husband and wife, for goodness’ sake."

Anne Sutton looked at the unreasonable old woman, not bothering to argue with her. "I’m going in to be with my sister."

With that, she walked through the door.

Mrs. Hayes, still furious, remained outside, continuing to cause a scene.

Anne stood inside the hospital room, watching Sharon. Sharon was already awake. Seeing Anne, she murmured, "Sis."

She looked terribly haggard.

Anne looked at her and said nothing.

Sharon knew her sister was surely upset with her.

She spoke up. "It’s all my fault... I was so blind. I knew something was wrong with him, but I kept lying to myself. I just never thought they would be so blatant about it."

The two of them had shown her no respect whatsoever.

Anne said, "You should get some rest."

"Is my baby... gone?" Sharon asked.

Anne looked at her, and a memory surfaced: the time she had been forced to abort her own baby. She, too, had thought her Ian was gone forever.

In that instant, it was like seeing a reflection of herself in Sharon.

Anne’s eyes stung with tears. She said to Sharon, "Losing a child of their family... it’s not a bad thing. If you’d had the baby, you would have been entangled with that family forever. So what are your plans? Are you going to divorce him?"

’If, even after all this, she’s not planning to divorce him...’

’...Anne would be speechless!’

Sharon asked, "Where’s David?"

Anne’s face darkened when she saw that Sharon was still asking about that man.

Just then, David Hayes appeared at the door and knocked gently. "Sharon."

He had heard Sharon’s voice and knew she was awake.

Anne was cold and unyielding, and he knew he couldn’t get through to her.

Now that Sharon was awake, his only hope was to apologize to her properly.

As long as Sharon didn’t want a divorce, the others couldn’t force her hand.

Sharon spoke up. "Let him in."

Anne said, "This is your problem. You handle it."

With that, Anne walked to the door and said to David, "Sharon said you can come in."

David entered the room. Seeing Sharon, he rushed over and grabbed her hand. "Sharon, you’re finally awake! I was worried sick!"

Sharon looked at the man’s tear-streaked face. She couldn’t understand how he could do something so disgusting on one hand, yet pretend to be so worried about her on the other.

She spoke, her voice filled with repulsion. "Let go of me."

Hearing her, David looked at her and then, with a THUD, dropped to his knees by her bed. "About Lucy Todd, I know I was wrong! But I swear, nothing happened between us. She was the one pestering me, seducing me. I just had a moment of weakness. Sharon, you’ve always been the one I love! You have to believe me, okay?"

Standing to the side, Anne listened to his words, finding them utterly ridiculous.

Anne interjected, "But in the photos, you didn’t look very reluctant. In fact, you looked more than willing."

’The moment there’s trouble, he shoves all the blame onto the woman, acting as if he’s some innocent little boy!’

David gritted his teeth and looked at Sharon. "Sharon."

"Answer my sister’s question," Sharon said, staring at him. "Don’t try to change the subject."

David said, "So you want to divorce me too, is that it?"

"Yes," Sharon said. "The baby is gone. It must be fate."

’If she still had the baby, she might have hesitated. But now, even the baby was gone!’

’She had lost her last remaining tie to him!’

She had already been disappointed before, when she saw how fiercely he defended his mother.

But back then, she reminded herself that they were having a child together, so she desperately held back and chose to believe that he loved her.

But after everything that had happened, she just couldn’t take it anymore!

David said, "Don’t you remember all the good times we had together?"

"You’re the one who forgot!" Sharon retorted. "You certainly didn’t remember me when you were with that woman. You never really loved me, did you? From the very beginning, you were just after the Sutton family’s money, weren’t you!"

When they first met, the Sutton family was already quite wealthy.

Even if things weren’t perfect, Sean Sutton still had a company to his name.

To someone like David Hayes, a family with its own company meant she was already incredibly rich.

Naturally, he wasn’t going to pass up an opportunity like that.

He chose to give up Lucy Todd to be with her!

He never truly loved her for who she was.

Hearing Sharon’s words, David cried, "That’s not true! I love you! For you, I even gave up that child back then! How could I not love you? And now you’re just going to throw me away? How can you do this to me?"

Sharon lay on the bed and closed her eyes as a tear slid from the corner.

Anne watched the scene unfold and then said to David, "Sharon has made herself perfectly clear. None of you need to come here for the next few days. Once she’s feeling a bit better, you two will go and finalize the divorce."

David said, "I don’t want to."

Anne said, "Then I’ll go get Nathan Fawcett."

She then walked to the door and said to Nathan, who was waiting outside, "David Hayes refuses to leave. Can you handle it?"

Hearing this, David was so frightened that he immediately rushed out of the room.

Like Sean Sutton, he was terrified of Nathan Fawcett.

If Nathan ordered him out, he’d be dragged out, which would be far more humiliating than leaving on his own.

Mrs. Hayes saw David come out and asked, "What happened? What did Sharon say?"

"She wants to divorce me," David said, his voice devoid of all hope.

Sharon was his only hope. But now, she wouldn’t even give him the time of day.

Mrs. Hayes exclaimed, "How could she do this? It’s bad enough she lost my grandson, but now she has the audacity to ask for a divorce!"

"..." Anne looked at Nathan. "Please handle this. I don’t want to see them."

Nathan immediately called for Butler Walters and had the Hayes family escorted out of the hospital.

...

It was morning, the sky already bright, by the time Anne and Nathan returned home.

Sitting in the passenger seat, she rubbed her temples and said to Nathan, "If I had known it would turn out like this, I never would have hidden it from her in the first place."

In the end, we kept it a secret, and the baby still couldn’t be saved.

Nathan said, "You did everything you could. What happened was out of anyone’s control."
