Married the Sick Uncle – Just Waiting to Inherit His Fortune
Chapter 317: Someone Surnamed Xu Doesn’t Have This Opportunity
Anne Sutton looked at the man and couldn’t help but laugh. She turned and saw Ian sitting on the sofa, covering his eyes with his little hands. "Naughty, naughty!"
Anne Sutton: "..."
She reached out and pushed Nathan Fawcett away. "Go upstairs and get the bed ready!" she said.
Since he was moving in, Anne planned to get a room ready for him and Ian.
With that, they went upstairs.
David Hayes had already gone back to Sharon Sutton’s room.
Sharon Sutton woke up from a nap with a terrible headache. She sat up. "David, get me a glass of water."
No one answered her.
She looked up and saw David Hayes sitting on the sofa. "David, I asked you to get me some water. Didn’t you hear me?"
Getting no response, she grew irritated.
David Hayes said, "Get it yourself. I’m busy."
"..." Sharon Sutton stared at him. ’He’s never like this!’
Usually, if she asked him for water, he’d get it for her immediately.
But now he was actually telling her to get it herself!
"What are you so busy with?" she asked.
"Work, of course," David Hayes replied. "People like us, with no connections, can only rely on our own efforts, isn’t that right? Otherwise, your family just sees us as incompetent. Your sister just told me I need to try harder on my own."
Hearing his tone, Sharon asked, "Did my sister say something to you?"
"She didn’t," David Hayes said sarcastically. "She just told me to focus more on my work and less on you. So, I guess I have to be busier with work now, right?"
Sharon Sutton: "..."
She glanced at David Hayes, then steadied herself against the wall as she walked out the door.
She went to get a glass of water first, then went upstairs to Anne Sutton’s room.
Anne Sutton had just finished getting Ian’s room ready when she turned around and saw Sharon Sutton standing in the doorway.
Anne saw her. "Sharon."
Sharon Sutton walked over, looked at Anne, and demanded, "What did you say to David during dinner?"
"What, he told you?"
"We’re husband and wife. Is there anything he can’t tell me?" Sharon said. "Sister, do you think my life is just too easy or something? Do you have to stir up trouble? After you said all that nonsense in front of him, what is he going to think of me?"
"I didn’t say anything," Anne replied. "If he’s blaming you, it just shows how petty he is! His intentions weren’t good from the start."
"Do you want me to get a divorce?" Sharon demanded, looking at Anne. "You already made Mom and Dad divorce, and now you can’t wait for me to do the same? That’s right! You’re my big sister, you’re rich now, you’re so high and mighty! You can look down on us, but can’t you just let me have a decent life? Things are already hard enough for us!"
Standing to the side, Nathan Fawcett’s expression darkened as he watched the scene unfold.
Ian silently hugged his leg, not daring to say a word.
Anne Sutton looked at Sharon. "Make yourself clear. What do you mean, I made Mom and Dad get a divorce? What does their divorce have to do with me?"
"How could it have nothing to do with you?" Sharon retorted. "If you hadn’t broken up with Charles Prescott, if you hadn’t caused so much trouble, our family would be perfectly fine. It was all you! It’s all your fault!"
With that, Sharon turned and ran out.
Her head was pounding and she was in a foul mood, so she naturally blamed everything on Anne Sutton.
Anne Sutton stood frozen, unable to believe...
...that Sharon would blame their parents’ divorce on her.
’Was it wrong for me to want Mom and Dad to divorce?’
Anne Sutton turned and glanced at Nathan Fawcett.
Nathan Fawcett looked at her, walked over, and wrapped his arms around her.
It was a hug full of understanding.
Held in his arms, Anne Sutton couldn’t hold back her tears. "Do you think it’s my fault Mom and Dad got divorced, too?"
"Of course not!" Nathan said. "You didn’t do anything. Besides... with their relationship the way it was, not divorcing wouldn’t have been any better. Your sister is being childish. Don’t take what she said to heart."
But Nathan’s comfort didn’t make Anne feel any better.
She came out of Ian’s room and saw that Sharon had run out, leaving the front door wide open.
David Hayes came downstairs. Anne Sutton’s expression turned icy as she looked at him. "If anything happens to Sharon, I will hold you responsible."
’This man is clearly nothing but trouble!’
’But in the end, in Sharon’s eyes, I’m the one with the problem!’
’And it’s my fault for not helping him?’
"I’ll go find her," David Hayes said, hearing Anne’s threat.
He quickly left.
...
Anne Sutton looked around the empty house. She had gotten the house back, but her home was gone forever.
She went to her mother’s room and saw her crying, clutching an old family portrait. Her heart ached at the sight, and not daring to disturb her, she could only retreat to the living room and sit down in silence.
It wasn’t until David Hayes sent a message from Sharon’s phone, saying they had gotten home safely, that Anne could finally relax.
David Hayes was renting an apartment in the city, which was where they were living now.
That night, she lay in bed, staring at the ceiling, in a terrible mood.
Nathan Fawcett lay beside her. Seeing her like this, he propped himself up and gently touched her face. "Anne."
Anne Sutton closed her eyes. "I really don’t know what to do anymore," she said.
"Then don’t do anything," Nathan said. "You don’t need to. In this life, it’s enough to be responsible for yourself. As for everyone else... you’ve already done what you should."
Anne Sutton looked at Nathan. "How about you check with the company... see if you can arrange a different position for David Hayes."
In the end, she chose to compromise.
’That’s just how people are,’ she thought. ’Sometimes you’re truly left with no choice.’
She didn’t want to lose her sister.
’After all, she was pregnant...’
Anne realized her black-and-white view of the world was probably not suited for a situation like this.
Nathan looked at her. "Alright. When I’m back at the office, I’ll have someone look into it. It’s not hard to arrange a job, really. It’s just... even if we do, a solution like this won’t be enough to sustain their marriage. From what I can see, that man isn’t truly sincere with your sister."
If he really loved her, he would never have let her be the one to ask for this, to let things get so ugly.
"Just give her what she wants," Anne said.
Anything to keep Sharon from hating her later.
...
Nathan looked at Anne. "Right. A problem that has a solution isn’t really a problem. Don’t worry about it."
Anne looked at him. "Never mind. You were supposed to come back for the holiday, and instead I made you face all this with me."
But Nathan just smiled when he heard that.
"What are you smiling about?" Anne asked.
Nathan said, "I just think... it’s good, being able to face these things with you. At least I get to be a part of your life. That Shields fellow doesn’t get this opportunity."
Anne sputtered with laughter, completely speechless. ’I can’t believe that even now... you’re still thinking about competing with Justin Shields!’
She said to Nathan, "Oh, give me a break! I’m exhausted."
She’d cried so much her eyes were sore.
"Then sleep," Nathan said.
