Seeing that her sister was unhappy with what she’d said, Anne Sutton sighed helplessly. "You’re just too naive."

Sharon Sutton looked at Anne Sutton. Seeing how guarded she was and unwilling to help, Sharon turned and walked out the door.

David Hayes was standing by the door. When he saw her come out, he asked, "How did it go?"

"I’m tired. I want to go rest for a bit." After saying this, Sharon Sutton turned to her mother. "Mom, I’m going to head upstairs to rest. I’m a bit carsick from today."

Mrs. Sutton said, "Go on, then. Come down for dinner in a little while."

"It’s all right, you don’t have to call me for dinner."

She went upstairs, and David Hayes followed her.

He looked at her and asked, "Did you tell your sister?"

Sharon Sutton said, "I told her. She didn’t agree."

David Hayes was somewhat disappointed. "You’re her only sister. You ask her for such a small thing, and she still won’t agree?"

Sharon Sutton glanced at David Hayes and said, "Tell your mom not to come to me with this kind of thing again. It’s really annoying. I don’t want to talk to my sister about it."

’She didn’t want to trouble Anne Sutton, either.’

’The point was, even if she did ask, Anne Sutton wouldn’t agree.’

’Her family had been against her getting together with David Hayes from the start.’

’If she hadn’t gotten pregnant, they never would have approved.’

’Now, being asked to go to Anne Sutton again for David Hayes’s sake felt so humiliating.’

David Hayes said, "My mom only says these things for our own good. She’s worried my salary won’t be enough to cover our expenses. And she’s right. Look, we have prenatal checkups and living costs every month. The pressure is already pretty high, isn’t it?"

Sharon Sutton retorted, "So what if there’s pressure? Your salary is what it is. What can we do? I didn’t even ask you for a wedding! I’ve already decided that’s not important. Isn’t that enough for you?"

"I only say a couple of things and you get all worked up." David Hayes said, "My parents have had it so tough. They spent so much money and went into so much debt to raise me. People are still coming to them to collect on those debts! Now that I’m with you, all the money I make goes to supporting you. I can’t help them at all, and I already feel terrible about it."

Sharon Sutton looked at him and said, "Your parents having a hard time, what does that have to do with me?"

"How can you say that about them?" David Hayes demanded. "Have I ever said a single bad thing about your parents? When your family was in trouble, wasn’t I running around helping out? When your mother was sick, I visited her in the hospital plenty of times, didn’t I? This whole time, your sister has been hiding out in Veridia, and I haven’t seen her come back to look after your mother. And now... suddenly it’s all my fault! I’m good to your family, but you can’t stand mine?"

Hearing his words, Sharon Sutton fell silent.

’She just felt awful.’

’She felt that if Mrs. Hayes hadn’t said those things, and if she hadn’t brought it up with her sister, things wouldn’t have turned out this way.’

’But now, David Hayes’s words were making it all seem like it was her fault!’

...

Sharon Sutton lay on the bed and stopped talking.

David Hayes sat on a nearby sofa, also silent. The two of them remained that way, neither saying a word, until the family’s housekeeper came upstairs to call them for dinner.

Sharon Sutton didn’t move. David Hayes asked, "You’re not going to eat?"

Sharon Sutton said, "I have no appetite. You go eat by yourself!"

Hearing this, David Hayes walked out the door.

Downstairs, Anne Sutton saw David Hayes coming down and asked, "Is Sharon not eating?"

"She said she’s not feeling well and doesn’t want to eat right now."

"Save some for her, then!" ’In reality, Anne Sutton knew the real reason her sister wasn’t feeling well. It wasn’t carsickness. It was because of me!’

She sat to one side and glanced at David Hayes.

David Hayes noticed Anne Sutton looking at him and said, "What is it? Why are you looking at me like that?"

"It’s nothing," Anne Sutton said. "I heard from Sharon that you think your salary is too low and you want a different position."

Hearing Anne Sutton bring this up, a sliver of hope ignited in David Hayes. He said, "If you can help, that would be great. But if you can’t, then just forget it."

Anne Sutton said, "I’m only bringing this up to tell you that Sharon doesn’t understand these things. You don’t need to waste your energy on her. If you’re serious about getting a promotion, you should focus more on your work!"

Hearing Anne Sutton’s words, David Hayes’s face stiffened. He hadn’t expected to be lectured by her instead of getting her help.

David Hayes lowered his head and said nothing.

He barely touched his food before quickly heading upstairs.

Nathan Fawcett, sitting beside her, looked at Anne and asked, "Don’t you think that was a bit harsh?"

Anne Sutton asked, "How so?"

"He’s probably not very happy about it."

Anne Sutton said, "He’s not happy? *I’m* the one who’s not happy! I’ve never been able to stand him."

’He’s the kind of man who cheats. The only reason he’s still around is that Sharon can’t leave him.’

’That’s why Anne Sutton had no choice but to accept him as family.’

’Otherwise, she truly never wanted to see David Hayes again.’

Nathan Fawcett watched her, the corners of his lips turning up in a slight smile.

’Ah, well.’

Mrs. Sutton, sitting nearby, said to Anne Sutton, "He did come to see me often while I was in the hospital."

Anne Sutton’s gaze fell on her mother. "I heard," she said.

Mrs. Sutton said, "Actually, David is a good person."

Anne Sutton asked her mother, "So you think I should help him, Mom?"

’Anne Sutton really didn’t want to get involved in his job change.’

’Besides, David Hayes was the one who brought it up.’

’It would have been better if he hadn’t asked. The moment he did, his motive became painfully obvious.’

Mrs. Sutton said, "I’m just worried that if his job situation doesn’t improve, life will be hard for Sharon. The two of them just got married, and the Hayes Family is in a bad financial state. I heard his parents have very low incomes. They’ve been married all this time and haven’t even talked about having a wedding."

In her mother’s eyes, not having a wedding was as good as not being married at all.

Just getting the license... it always felt like something was missing.

Hearing her mother’s words, Anne Sutton glanced at Nathan Fawcett again but didn’t say anything for the moment.

After dinner, Anne Sutton looked at Nathan Fawcett and asked, "Do you also think I was out of line?"

Nathan Fawcett said, "Not at all. Your brother-in-law had your sister bring this up, and he obviously had an agenda. It’s understandable that you’re not willing to help. I’m just worried your sister will be the one to suffer for it."

"If that’s the case, doesn’t that just prove he’s even less worthy of my help?" At this, Anne Sutton sighed.

Nathan Fawcett said, "But she’s pregnant now."

"I’d rather she divorced him and I supported her than see her get used by that scumbag."

Hearing her words, Nathan Fawcett’s lips curved into a smile. "You really have zero tolerance for this sort of thing, don’t you?"

"Maybe it’s because this world is just full of scumbags!"

Anne Sutton continued, "Ever since I found out my own father was that kind of person, I’ve suddenly started to feel like there’s nothing in this world worth believing in. Do you think love actually exists? Or... is it something that’s only in movies and on TV?"

Hearing her words, Nathan Fawcett chuckled. "Who knows!"

He walked over to her side, leaned in, and kissed her on the cheek. "I only know that I love you very much right now."
