Level 999: The Glitch King
Chapter 85: The War for the Crown
The seventeenth claim had barely finished filing when the first claimant arrived without traveling anywhere. A woman appeared beside Eleanor White. She was only light, but the projection had weight enough to cast a shadow across Avery's papers. More figures followed. One stood inside a hall of gold glass. Another appeared beneath a vaulted ceiling that showed stars moving behind it. Others remained hidden behind House seals, their bodies reduced to silhouettes while legal identifiers unfolded beneath them.
Seventeen claims arranged themselves around Jace's name.
CROWNLINE SUCCESSION EVENT
Candidate Index: ZERO.
Recognized Bloodline: ZERO-PROTOCOL.
Active House Claims: 17.
Physical Claimants Present: 0.
Remote Legal Presence: 17.
Territory Benefits: SUSPENDED.
Safe Zone Protection: ADMINISTRATIVE HOLD.
Jace looked around the plaza.
"Good. More people who can ruin my day without parking."
Eleanor did not answer. She was staring at the woman beside her.
HOUSE SUNCHAIN
Representative: Charlotte Sunchain.
Position: Head Claimant.
Claim Type: RECOVERY / PRESERVATION.
Standing: LEGAL.
Prior Contact with Candidate: INDIRECT.
Claim Strength: 71%.
Charlotte wore black beneath a narrow gold mantle. She looked nothing like Theodore, yet Jace recognized the same controlled stillness in her face. The difference was that hers had not been installed. She looked at him. Then at the fourteen suspended Free Claim lines. Then at the Safe Zone. Her expression changed.
"You freed the vault."
It was not a question.
"Working theory."
"You removed four hundred twelve indexed heirs from House custody."
"They seemed attached to the idea."
Charlotte's eyes returned to him.
"You have no idea what was hunting some of them before Sunchain found them."
"No."
The answer stopped her.
Jace continued. "That still didn't make them yours."
Charlotte went quiet. A second projection sharpened near Avery's table. Penelope Ardent looked younger than Charlotte and much less interested in appearing impressive. Her clothes were dark blue, without jewels or armor. A stack of translucent records rotated behind her.
HOUSE ARDENT
Representative: Penelope Ardent.
Stolen content alert: this content belongs on NovelPhoenix. Report any occurrences.
House Function: Registry / Provenance.
Claim Type: RECORD VERIFICATION.
Claim Strength: 48%.
Requested Rights:
Bloodline authentication.
Historical provenance access.
Crownline record review.
Custody requested: NO.
Penelope looked at Avery's paper ledger first. Not Jace.
"Those are local records?"
Avery pulled them closer. "They're ours."
Penelope's mouth shifted slightly.
"Keep them that way."
Charlotte turned toward her.
"Ardent."
"Sunchain."
The third projection arrived already holding a sword. Alexander Rook was broad-shouldered, silver-armored, and visibly unimpressed by the fact that everyone else had brought paperwork.
HOUSE ROOK
Representative: Alexander Rook.
House Function: Martial Succession Enforcement.
Claim Type: BLOODLINE CHALLENGE.
Claim Strength: 63%.
Requested Rights:
Formal duel.
Succession standing.
Challenge entry.
Candidate combat verification.
Alexander looked at Jace's stretcher.
"You are the Crownline candidate?"
"Apparently."
"You look nearly dead."
"Long administrative process."
Alexander's gaze moved to Eleanor.
"Has he been medically disqualified?"
"No."
"Then I challenge."
Olivia stepped forward.
"He's lying on a stretcher."
Alexander looked at her. "Then he should not accept."
"You filed anyway."
"Yes."
At least he had the decency not to dress it up. The seventeen seals shifted. A much larger interface opened across the plaza.
[FACTION SYSTEM EXPANSION]
WORLD EVENT: THE WAR FOR THE CROWN
A surviving pre-registry Crownline candidate has been identified.
Noble factions may establish legal interest through:
Succession Challenge.
Recovery Claim.
Custody Petition.
Bloodline Verification.
Resource Injunction.
Marriage Compact.
Bounty Authorization.
Territorial Inheritance.
Jace read the list twice.
"You buried marriage between taxes and murder."
"Historically common," Eleanor said.
"History needs hobbies."
The System continued.
CURRENT LEGAL PERMISSIONS
House Sunchain:
Recovery petition permitted.
Extraction team deployment: LOCKED pending Blood Proof.
House Ardent:
Provenance inspection permitted.
Blood seizure: PROHIBITED.
House Rook:
Formal challenge permitted.
Lethal duel: LOCKED pending verified succession standing.
Other Houses:
Permissions vary by claim.
The plaza had not changed. Nobody had drawn a weapon. James's crews still worked on the north wall. Emma still moved between patients. Madison still counted food. Yet a House that had never seen Earth could now become legally allowed to enter it because someone filed the correct form. That bothered Jace more than an army would have. Penelope watched him read.
"You understand."
"Starting to."
"Noble wars rarely begin with fleets."
Alexander folded his arms. "Fleets are expensive."
Penelope looked at him.
"That was not my point."
"They are still expensive."
Charlotte ignored both. She was reading the Free Claim records. Fourteen people protected. Zero owned. Her face tightened when she reached Noah's original consent.
"Who authorized this structure?"
"No one."
"That is impossible."
"Popular review."
She opened the maintenance history. The Health costs. The Charge deficits. The barrier losses. The rejected ownership conversions. Something about her certainty became less clean.
"You paid the missing yield yourself."
"Mostly."
"Why?"
Jace looked at her.
"Because the alternative was charging them."
Charlotte's expression did not soften. It became harder to read. The seventeen claims pulsed again.
[BLOOD PROOF QUEST]
Objective:
Establish whether Candidate Index ZERO possesses a legally continuous Crownline signature.
Proof Methods:
Voluntary blood sample.
Registered ancestral record.
House-certified lineage.
Pre-registry witness verification.
Time Limit: 00:30:00.
Failure:
Candidate remains disputed.
All seventeen claims retain provisional standing.
Resource-freeze petitions become available.
Recovery permissions expand.
Reward:
Succession legitimacy.
Faction standing.
Restricted CROWN record access.
Jace opened Breach Sight. The word reward split.
SUCCESSION LEGITIMACY
Hidden Consequences:
Eligible inheritance target.
Eligible marriage compact.
Eligible recovery transfer.
Eligible bloodline bounty.
Eligible Crown challenge.
He closed the panel.
"Reward seems enthusiastic."
Penelope's gaze flicked toward him. She had seen something. Or guessed. The first new claim appeared beneath Charlotte's.
LOST HEIR PETITION.
Then another.
STOLEN RECOVERY ASSET.
Then three succession challenges arrived together. Charlotte read STOLEN RECOVERY ASSET. Her grip tightened on the edge of the panel.
"That claim is not Sunchain's."
Jace looked at her.
"Nice to know there are standards."
More filings opened.
LOST HEIR.
ABANDONED CROWN PROPERTY.
UNREGISTERED SUCCESSOR.
RECOVERABLE BLOODLINE.
The language changed around him while Jace remained exactly where he was. By the time the Blood Proof timer reached twenty-seven minutes, the seventeen Houses had already begun arguing over whether he was a person who had returned or property somebody else had misplaced.
