Level 999: The Glitch King

Chapter 86: Proof of Blood

  • Next Chapter

The first resource freeze arrived before anyone produced a drop of blood.

Penelope made Jace compare the four proof routes before choosing. A blood sample was fast and reusable. House certification was strong and political. Ancestral records depended on institutions already disputing him. Pre-registry witness verification was slower, messier, and harder to own after the fact. The best route was not the one with the highest percentage. It was the one that left the least dangerous thing behind once the hearing ended.

The pre-registry route also had a weakness: witnesses could be challenged, memories could be incomplete, and nobody promised the court would value an old truth over a new record. Jace chose it anyway. A slower proof that left his blood in nobody's vault was worth the procedural risk.

That was a kind of progression Jace had not expected. Breach Sight could expose hidden clauses, but somebody still had to decide which visible cost was acceptable.

RESOURCE INJUNCTION FILED

Petitioner: House Velorum.

Grounds: Preservation of disputed Crownline estate.

Target Resources:

Safe Zone Charge Reserve.

Anchor network.

Forbidden Palace access.

Current Reserve: 734 Charge.

Requested Freeze: 61%.

Jace looked at Eleanor.

"Can they do that?"

"If the injunction survives review."

"Can I object?"

"Yes."

"Good."

"Your objection requires proof of standing."

Jace stared at her.

"Which requires blood."

"Yes."

"Strong system."

Penelope Ardent lowered her eyes. Charlotte did not.

"Submit the sample," she said.

Olivia turned toward her. "No."

Charlotte ignored her.

"One drop establishes continuity. Once continuity exists, most opportunistic claims collapse."

Penelope spoke without raising her voice.

"It also creates a reusable bloodline key."

Charlotte looked at her. Penelope opened the Blood Proof contract. The clean interface expanded.

VOLUNTARY BLOOD PROOF

Sample ownership:

Candidate until submitted.

After submission:

If you encounter this story on Amazon, note that it's taken without permission from the author. Report it.

Registry retains verification signature indefinitely.

Authorized derivative uses:

Succession authentication.

Recovery matching.

Inheritance challenges.

Marriage compatibility.

Bloodline tracking.

Bounty verification.

Charlotte's face changed at the fourth line. Then the fifth.

"That is not standard proof custody."

Penelope looked at her.

"It is Crownline proof custody."

"You knew?"

"I checked."

Charlotte's eyes hardened. "Ardent records were sealed from Sunchain."

"Your House still filed a recovery claim without reading them."

Silence. The timer continued.

BLOOD PROOF

00:21:18.

RESOURCE INJUNCTION

Review in: 00:07:00.

Jace looked at Charlotte.

"You wanted me to submit it."

"Yes."

"Still do?"

Charlotte's answer took long enough for the Sunchain seal to pulse twice. She had arrived certain that preservation justified possession because she had spent her life watching the alternative eat entire bloodlines. Jace could see that conviction in the way she stood. She had not been pretending. Now the machine had moved one clause beyond the bargain she thought she understood.

"No," Charlotte said.

The word was quiet. House Sunchain's seal reacted.

FACTION POSITION CHANGE

House Sunchain Recovery Claim: 71% -> 66%.

Representative compliance: QUESTIONED.

Charlotte looked at the drop. She had spent claim strength to say one word. Alexander Rook noticed.

"You weaken your House over a clause?"

Charlotte faced him.

"Would you sign a duel contract allowing the victor to breed your bloodline after death?"

Alexander considered it.

"No."

"Then don't ask stupid questions."

Jace almost liked her for three seconds. Penelope opened a second proof route.

PRE-REGISTRY WITNESS VERIFICATION

Requirements:

Candidate bloodline response.

Independent Auditor observation.

Local continuity record.

No physical sample retained.

Reliability: 72%.

Succession acceptance threshold: 80%.

"Close," Penelope said.

Eleanor examined it.

"I can observe."

Jace looked at her. "You're locked out."

"Of CROWN authority. Not eyesight."

Avery placed the paper ledger on the table.

"What does local continuity contribute?"

Penelope answered.

"Proof that his current identity existed before the Crownline broadcast. It prevents Houses from arguing that the bloodline manifested into an empty claimant."

"That is a sentence I hate."

"You'll have options."

Avery opened Jace's records. Times Square. The first scan. Sunchain recovery. Noah. Lily. The Safe Zone. Two hundred thirty-one names. Penelope selected the earliest verified bloodline event.

BLOODLINE SCAN: 100% MATCH.

Source: Origin-Thread Alpha.

Status: Forbidden Heir of the Zero-Protocol.

Eleanor's eyes narrowed.

"That record predates the current Crown broadcast."

"Yes."

"Then the System already verified his blood."

Penelope looked at her.

"Exactly."

The plaza became silent. Jace opened Breach Sight. A seam ran through the Blood Proof quest.

CURRENT PROOF REQUEST

Claimed Purpose: Establish bloodline identity.

Existing verified proof: PRESENT.

Actual Purpose:

Generate current registry-owned Crownline sample.

His mouth went dry.

"They aren't asking who I am."

Penelope nodded.

"They're asking for a copy they own."

Charlotte stared at the hidden line. Something cold entered her expression. Not surprise this time. Anger. House Sunchain specialized in ownership dressed as preservation. She knew that machinery better than anyone standing there. But this machinery had just tried to use her. Jace filed the existing bloodline scan as proof.

BLOOD PROOF SUBMISSION

Method: Prior System Verification.

Physical Sample: NONE.

Registry-owned signature created: NO.

Eleanor certification: VERIFIED.

Local continuity evidence: VERIFIED.

Proof Strength: 72% -> 86%.

QUEST CONDITION MET.

The injunction struck instantly.

RESOURCE INJUNCTION REVIEW

House Velorum standing: INVALIDATED.

Safe Zone Charge Freeze: DENIED.

Overflow Experience: +4,000.

Pending Overflow Experience: 54,000.

Legal Insight: 24% -> 28%.

[BLOOD PROOF COMPLETE]

Crownline Continuity: VERIFIED.

Candidate Index ZERO: LEGITIMATE / DISPUTED SUCCESSION.

Physical Blood Rights: UNGRANTED.

Charlotte's claim shifted again.

HOUSE SUNCHAIN

Prior Claim: Recoverable Crown Asset.

Revised Claim: Lost Heir Preservation Interest.

Claim Strength: 66% -> 58%.

Jace looked at her.

"Still claiming me."

"Yes."

"Thought we were having a moment."

"We were not."

Better. Alexander's challenge became valid. Penelope's provenance access expanded. Fourteen other Houses received new legal permissions. The Safe Zone map changed beneath them.

EARTH TERRITORY STATUS

Local designation: Contested Shelter.

Additional designation:

CROWNLINE SUCCESSION VENUE.

Legal Entry Windows: ACTIVE.

Recovery Petitions: 5.

Succession Challenges: 7.

Custody Claims: 3.

Other Claims: 2.

The shield remained blue. No soldiers appeared. No ship entered the atmosphere. Yet seventeen Houses had just gained rules for who could cross the barrier, who could challenge Jace, and what they were allowed to take if they won.

The Safe Zone had become a legal inheritance war before the first army arrived.
