Level 999: The Glitch King

Chapter 84: Seventeen Seals

  • Next Chapter

The word CROWN appeared once. That was enough to silence every other System panel on Earth.

The seventeen seals did not arrive as seventeen identical threats. One immediately requested blood proof. Another froze a resource corridor. A third asked for a challenge date. Two only observed. The variation made the Houses more dangerous because they were not a single enemy with a shared plan. They were institutions with different incentives converging on the same impossible person.

Seventeen claims meant seventeen ways for the Houses to get in each other's way. That was almost encouraging.

Avery began a House ledger before the claims finished loading. Claim type, requested right, immediate cost, known conflict. Penelope's House cared about records. Rook cared about challenge standing. Sunchain cared about recovery. The smaller seals exposed transport, resource, and inheritance interests.

The list made the coming conflict look less like seventeen bosses and more like seventeen systems that could interfere with one another. Jace preferred that. Systems had seams.

Penelope's seal remained quieter than the others. Alexander Rook's flashed with challenge rights. Sunchain's carried recovery permissions. Jace started learning the first rule of the Crown war before anyone called it a war: surviving one House could strengthen another.

Eleanor read the last line.

"They locked me out."

Jace lay back against the stretcher.

"Welcome to local government."

She looked at him. This time the reaction reached her mouth before training stopped it. It wasn't a smile. It was close enough to prove she still knew how. Then Noah made a sound beside Avery. His Free Claim line had returned. Gray.

Noah rubbed both hands together as if checking that they still belonged to him.

"Frozen sounds better than deleted."

"It isn't protection," Avery said.

"No. But I can complain while alive."

She wrote that down. Noah looked at her.

"Please don't."

"Too late."

The Spire changed beneath them. Jace felt it through Reality Anchor before anyone saw it. Something older than the throne shifted below Manhattan. The Anchor Room. The buried conduits. The vault. A layer beneath all three opened without moving a single wall.

Jace looked at Eleanor.

"You seem disappointed."

"I am reconsidering several things."

"That's almost a hobby."

Her gaze stayed on the Crown panel.

"My office has audited extinct Crownline remnants for eleven thousand registered cycles."

Avery's pencil stopped.

"Extinct remnants?"

"Artifacts. dead claims. inherited debts. abandoned structures."

"And people?"

"No living candidate."

Noah looked at Jace.

"Until him."

Eleanor's eyes remained on the black panel.

"Apparently."

The word apparently carried more anger than anything she had said since arriving. Avery noticed.

"You believed the extinction record."

"It was root-certified."

"And now?"

Eleanor finally looked at her.

"Now I know my certification authority was beneath something it claimed no longer existed."

Avery wrote that sentence down. Eleanor saw her do it. She let her. The first seal appeared above the Spire. It was red, shaped like a circle split by three vertical cuts. A second appeared beside it. Then a third. Each was different. Some resembled animals reduced to geometric marks. Others looked like crowns, blades, suns, closed eyes. Eleanor's expression changed.

"Those are House seals."

"Friends?"

"No."

The fourth seal opened. Then the fifth.

Jace looked at Eleanor.

"You just mailed my address."

"I did not initiate the broadcast."

"Still blaming paperwork?"

"No."

The answer came immediately. That bothered him more. Six seals. Nine. Twelve. Avery began numbering them. Noah stood beside her, reading every incoming classification.

SUCCESSION INTEREST.

RECOVERY INTEREST.

CUSTODY PETITION.

BLOODLINE VERIFICATION.

TERRITORIAL INHERITANCE.

CROWN CHALLENGE.

Jace watched the words accumulate. Nobody had fired a weapon. Nobody had crossed the Safe Zone. The war was already becoming legal. Fourteen seals. Fifteen. Sixteen. The seventeenth arrived without color. Black metal seemed to unfold in the air above the Spire, carrying a mark so old Breach Sight could not translate it. Eleanor stepped backward.

"What?"

She did not answer immediately. Then the Dyson Ring appeared above Manhattan as a distant System projection, a band of impossible civilization around a dying star. Across it, lights began turning on. Old estates. Dormant registries. Sealed bloodline courts. House networks that had ignored Earth because Earth had never mattered. Until now.

CROWNLINE RECOGNITION BROADCAST COMPLETE.

"The Crownline wasn't erased."

Jace watched seventeen legal claims arrange themselves around his name.

"No."

Across the Dyson Ring, dormant house seals woke and began submitting claims over him.
