Level 999: The Glitch King
Chapter 141: Obsolete Protocol
Mutual Shelter remained unstable through the night. Every withdrawal route stayed open, which prevented the System from calculating a permanent resource floor. Every limited permission forced the barrier to check who had approved a repair before moving Charge. The protocol wasted time asking questions the hierarchy had designed claims to avoid.
Jace watched the north barrier lose three percent during a hard rain because Hazel's engineering approval did not include the damaged roof relay. She reached the relay, read the new route, and expanded her permission herself. The barrier recovered without Jace touching the decision.
Aiden returned as an outside reviewer. His withdrawal remained in effect. He could inspect public terms and offer translation, but the network denied him participant access until he submitted a new request.
"Good," he said. "It remembers that I left."
The Root Key Fragment rotated over the governance table. Older Law Perception separated the reconstructed protocol from Heir's Claim. The blue structure could remain a fragile side route, or Jace could evolve the claim skill around it.
[SKILL EVOLUTION AVAILABLE]
HEIR'S CLAIM Lv. 2
Current architecture:
Claimant-centered protection.
Ownership exclusion through Consent Protocol.
Claimant-first maintenance.
Standard command functions suppressed by local choice.
Evolution option: MUTUAL SHELTER Lv. 1.
Cost:
Root Key Attunement commitment: 5%.
Skill Points: 4.
Permanent loss of standard living-claim command branch.
Benefits:
Participant-supported Claim Capacity.
Distributed maintenance.
Inherent withdrawal.
Co-authored protection rules.
Risks:
Lower command efficiency.
Participant disagreement.
Unstable minimum Charge.
System illegality review.
Jace had sixteen unassigned Skill Points. Spending four would leave twelve. Root Key Attunement would rise through use rather than decrease; the commitment meant five percent of its current synchronization would become permanently bound to the shelter branch.
Sophia read the command loss. "Can the evolution be reversed?"
"No," Aiden said.
"Can participants reverse their own enrollment?"
"At any time."
Ella checked the boundary clause. "Can the network follow someone who leaves the Safe Zone?"
"Only if that person opens a new boundary."
Hazel selected maintenance history. "Can my Charge pay his title penalty?"
The protocol returned a clean refusal.
TITLE SUPPORT PROHIBITED
Mutual Shelter resources may maintain shared protection only.
No participant contribution may satisfy claimant title debt.
Jace selected EVOLVE. The System requested a claimant confirmation. The Root Protocol requested four participant confirmations. He approved his part. Hazel, Sophia, and Ella approved theirs. Aiden remained outside by choice.
The Free Claim lines widened without moving beneath Jace. Fourteen separate connections became a network of doors. Each door faced both directions, and each person held the handle on their own side.
Noah received the first conversion prompt because his claim had established the original contradiction. The new skill preserved his refusal record, his personal maintenance history, and every occasion when the System had tried to classify him as property. He approved protection sharing and refused location access.
Lily approved deletion resistance and kept her claim record separate. Eleven other Free Claim holders selected different limits. One delayed the conversion. Another allowed medical routing while rejecting defense use. The fourteenth person declined Mutual Shelter entirely and retained the prior Free Claim until a later choice.

CONVERSION REPORT
Converted Free Claims: 11.
Partially linked: 2.
Pending: 1.
Forced conversions: 0.
Protection lost for nonconversion: 0.
The evolution waited until each answer finished. Its activation time increased by eleven minutes because the System could not bundle the decisions into Jace's confirmation.
[SKILL EVOLUTION COMPLETE]
HEIR'S CLAIM Lv. 2 -> MUTUAL SHELTER Lv. 1.
Ownership: NONE.
Permanent claimant: NONE.
Core participants: 4.
Protected Free Claims: 14.
Participation: VOLUNTARY.
Withdrawal: IMMEDIATE / PERMANENT RIGHT.
Command authority: LIMITED TO SEPARATELY APPROVED EMERGENCY TERMS.
Default command authority: NONE.
Contribution requirement: NONE.
Silence as consent: PROHIBITED.
Current shared Charge: 21.
Free Claim maintenance: 170 Charge/day -> 96 Charge/day.
Claimant-funded maintenance share: 71% -> 48%.
Claimant Health fallback: DISABLED for participant-funded obligations.
Additional Free Claim Capacity: +6 through active support nodes.
Jace control: 0% over participant choices.
The reduction reached his body as the absence of pain. The old claim lines had taken small amounts of Health whenever Charge routes failed. Those conversions stopped on the portions Hazel, Sophia, and Ella maintained. Jace still carried the unsupported share, his title penalty, and every cost he accepted personally.
The progression reward opened after the last participant received an independent copy of the terms.
[MAJOR SKILL EVOLUTION REWARD]
Overflow Experience gained: 90,000.
Overflow Experience: 963,200 -> 1,053,200.
Skill Points spent: 4.
Unassigned Skill Points: 16 -> 12.
Root Key Attunement: 18% -> 23%.
Root-Layer Detection proficiency: 33% -> 41%.
Consent Protocol: ABSORBED.
New function: PARTICIPANT NODE.
New function: WITHDRAWAL AUDIT.
The reward did not improve Corruption. Jace remained at eighty-eight percent. Amelia and Zoey kept the Archive Council behind its consent boundary while thousands of identities examined a protection network that did not need one speaker.
Seraphina watched from a clinic chair near the doorway. She had enough strength to maintain the Free Accord for six seconds before closing it again. Mutual Shelter offered her a participant prompt. She selected LATER, and the network accepted the answer without lowering her access to the clinic.
Then every gold panel in the Safe Zone turned toward the blue network.
PROTOCOL CLASSIFICATION REVIEW
Mutual Shelter.
Origin: Pre-hierarchy.
Registration status: NONE.
Ownership compliance: 0%.
Command-chain compatibility: 3%.
Classification: OBSOLETE / ILLEGAL.
Required action: DELETE OR STANDARDIZE.
Jace selected neither.
[CORRECTION QUEST ISSUED]
DELETE THE OBSOLETE PROTOCOL
Target: Mutual Shelter Lv. 1.
Accept standardization reward:
Restore Heir's Claim command efficiency.
Convert participant nodes into subordinate anchors.
Remove permanent withdrawal.
Refusal consequence:
Legal defect search initiated.
Correction authority may use any valid House action.
The quest spread through the seventeen open noble windows above Earth. Sunchain searched for a recovery violation. Ardent searched for a registration defect. House Noble searched for stolen bloodline architecture. The System examined each filing and found no immediate authority to erase a protocol whose participants had all agreed to keep it.
The red challenge blade in the southern landing zone began to glow. House Rook already possessed a valid action, a formal duel against the claimant whose skill had evolved outside noble law.
The System began building its legal reason to delete Mutual Shelter from the challenge waiting at Jace's gate.
