Level 999: The Glitch King

Chapter 140: Withdrawal Rights

  • Next Chapter

The first enrollment panel opened at Madison's governance table instead of above Jace. Grace insisted on paper copies, and Jackson transmitted the terms before anyone accepted them. The Root Key displayed each request separately.

[MUTUAL SHELTER ENROLLMENT TEST]

Purpose: Shared Safe Zone protection.

Current authors: 4.

Ownership created: 0.

Participant choices:

Join.

Decline.

Join with limits.

Leave after joining.

No response effect: NONE.

Hazel read the engineering permissions first. "If I join with limits, can the shelter route Charge through equipment I approve?"

Aiden checked the reconstructed grammar. "Only while your approval remains active."

"Can it move the equipment?"

"No."

"Can Jace change my limit during an attack?"

Jace answered before the panel did. "Shouldn't be able to."

Sophia waited for the actual result.

The protocol confirmed it.

Participant: Hazel Ward.

Permission offered: Engineering access.

Approved structures: Water reclamation, north barrier conduits.

Charge contribution limit: 12.

Emergency override: NONE.

Hazel selected JOIN WITH LIMITS.

The System rejected the shape of the agreement.

MALFORMED TRANSACTION

Buyer: NONE.

Seller: NONE.

Property transferred: 0.

Permanent obligation: 0.

Correction required: Assign claimant and asset.

The Root Protocol preserved Hazel's acceptance beneath the rejection. A blue line connected her engineering panel to the two approved structures.

Michael Foster read his own request from the other side of the table. His protection history contained Warden fire, barricade duty, and three occasions when he had changed a defense route without waiting for authority.

"I already help defend the block," he said. "I do not need a line in my body to prove it."

Grace pointed to DECLINE. "Then use that."

Michael selected it.

DECLINE RECORDED

Shelter access: UNCHANGED.

Medical access: UNCHANGED.

Defense role: UNCHANGED.

Reputation penalty: 0.

Future enrollment: AVAILABLE.

The System flagged his refusal too.

MALFORMED TRANSACTION

Transaction declined without offered compensation review.

Behavioral expectation unresolved.

Michael closed the warning. "It can stay unresolved."

Sophia joined with testimony-record access and no Charge contribution. Ella approved boundary warnings while refusing location tracking. Each consent produced another malformed-transaction alert because nobody purchased protection, nobody sold labor, and no title gained control.

The shared pool opened after the third active participant.

MUTUAL SHELTER SHARED CHARGE

Hazel: 12.

Sophia: 0.

Ella: 6.

Aiden: 8.

Jace: 10.

Available pool: 36.

Allowed uses:

Participant-approved barrier repair.

Emergency extraction within selected boundaries.

Free Claim maintenance support.

Prohibited uses:

Title maintenance.

Personal skill activation.

Unapproved pursuit.

Lily Morgan volunteered to test whether an existing Free Claim could join without replacing its original consent. Her claim had been the first to force an explicit, informed, revocable protection route into Heir's Claim. Mutual Shelter opened beside it rather than above it.

EXISTING FREE CLAIM COMPATIBILITY

Participant: Lily Morgan.

Original consent: PRESERVED.

Original withdrawal rights: PRESERVED.

New permission requested: Shared deletion resistance.

Charge contribution requested: 4.

Lily reduced the contribution to two and accepted. Her line turned blue at the edges while the center remained the color of her original Free Claim. The System attempted to merge both records and failed because neither granted authority to rewrite the other.

MALFORMED TRANSACTION

Duplicate independent consent detected.

Recommended correction: Consolidate under claimant.

Lily selected KEEP SEPARATE.

Shared Charge: 36 -> 38.

Deletion resistance network: ACTIVE.

Nobody received control of her original claim.

Aiden had joined to test translation stability. He selected LEAVE.

The System opened three warnings and one confirmation.

Withdrawal removes future contribution.

Withdrawal reduces active pool.

Withdrawal may weaken shared protection.

Retaliation rights: NONE.

Confirm?

"If leaving breaks the protocol, it never had withdrawal rights," Aiden said.

He confirmed.

Shared Charge: 38 -> 30.

Aiden contribution returned: 8.

Protection stability: 42% -> 31%.

Aiden access: ENDED.

Penalty: NONE.

The withdrawal triggered a real failure instead of a demonstration panel. A weak section of the west barrier had been using Aiden's eight Charge to stabilize a temporary seal. The seal opened three inches when his contribution returned. Rain and gold interference entered together, and Jackson's nearest radio began repeating House Sunchain's custody notice.

Liam did not order Aiden back into the network. He moved people away from the opening. Hazel expanded engineering access to the temporary seal, while Ella declined because the west alley sat outside her chosen boundary. Sophia approved communication shielding and refused physical barrier work. Each limited answer forced the protocol to find a route built from permissions it actually possessed.

MUTUAL SHELTER RESPONSE

Engineering support: Hazel, APPROVED.

Communication shielding: Sophia, APPROVED.

Boundary expansion: Ella, DECLINED.

Claimant override: UNAVAILABLE.

Available shared Charge: 30.

Required Charge: 9.

Jace offered five. Hazel offered four through the approved conduit. The seal closed in eleven seconds. Shared Charge fell from thirty to twenty-one. Heir's Claim could have done it in four. The extra seven seconds forced Liam to keep the hall clear and James to brace the wall by hand.

Aiden watched from outside the network. "Do you want me to rejoin?"

Hazel checked the repaired seal. "Only if you want to."

"I do not."

"Then hold that brace."

He helped James without reopening a participant line.

The north barrier dimmed. Hazel's approved conduits picked up four points of the lost support. Ella narrowed the western boundary and recovered two more. Jace could have replaced all eight from his personal Charge, but Sophia stopped him before he selected the route.

"If you fill every space, the burden remains yours."

"Wall is weaker."

"Yes. That is the cost of letting someone leave."

They left the weakness visible. Liam moved one physical barricade to compensate. James added a steel brace without joining the network. Michael helped him carry it, proving again that refusal did not remove responsibility from the person who chose it.

Jace opened the maintenance comparison.

CLAIM SUPPORT DISTRIBUTION

Living Free Claims: 14.

Claimant-funded share: 100% -> 71%.

Participant-funded share: 0% -> 17%.

Physical infrastructure share: 0% -> 12%.

Claimant Health fallback risk: REDUCED.

Command response speed: -23%.

The comparison also showed what the percentages concealed. A claimant-centered barrier remained strongest while Jace stayed conscious, supplied, and correct. Mutual Shelter remained weaker during agreement and stronger during absence. The projected defense fell below Heir's Claim for the first hour, matched it after six hours of distributed maintenance, and exceeded it only if Jace became unavailable.

PROJECTED CONTINUITY

Jace active:

Heir's Claim efficiency: 100%.

Mutual Shelter efficiency: 77%.

Jace unconscious:

Heir's Claim efficiency: 29%.

Mutual Shelter efficiency: 68%.

Jace removed from territory:

Heir's Claim efficiency: 11%.

Mutual Shelter efficiency: 61%.

Michael read the final line and nodded once. "Build the thing that survives the person."

The network responded more slowly than Heir's Claim and protected less territory per point of Charge. It also continued operating after one author left, one resident refused, and two participants restricted what their contributions could do.

The System classified every consent prompt as a malformed transaction. The people using the protocol kept treating each one as a decision.
