Level 999: The Glitch King

Chapter 142: Noble Duel

  • Next Chapter

The System spent four seconds searching for a reason to destroy Mutual Shelter.

House Rook answered with a sword.

The red challenge blade completed its turn in the southern landing zone, and the parking lot stopped being a parking lot. Crimson light carved through the hard rain. Asphalt rose in grinding circles. Abandoned cars slid upward and locked together beneath tiers of black stone. Four city blocks folded around a sand floor while ten thousand empty seats climbed toward the clouds.

The seats did not stay empty.

Three hundred and twelve civilians vanished from apartments, bus shelters, night kitchens, and evacuation lines. They reappeared throughout the arena with red chains around their seats. A birdcage landed beside an old woman. Two retired bus drivers arrived holding cups of coffee and looking deeply offended.

[HOUSE ROOK BLADE COLOSSEUM: DEPLOYED]

[UNWILLING SPECTATORS: 312]

[ARENA HEART: CONNECTED TO FOURTEEN PROTECTED BLOCKS]

Jace saw the last line and forgot how tired he was.

Above the arena, the clouds opened around the belly of a black iron warship nine kilometers long. Its underside resembled an enormous open jaw. Fourteen red cables descended from that jaw and stabbed into the Safe Zone, one cable for every Free Claim protected by Mutual Shelter.

Alexander Rook dropped from the ship in silver armor.

He struck the sand without bending his knees. The impact flattened the rain for fifty feet around him. A sword the color of fresh blood unfolded from his right gauntlet, lengthened past his shoulder, and began humming against every skill in Jace's body.

"Jace," Alexander said. The arena carried his voice to every seat. "I was sent to cut your shelter out of the world."

"You planning to?"

Alexander looked at the chained civilians. His jaw tightened once.

"I am planning to see whether you can stop me."

The System slammed the trial into the sky in letters large enough for Manhattan to read.

[ROOK BLADE TRIAL: NOBLE DUEL]

[VICTORY: BREAK THE ARENA, CLAIM ROOK TRIAL ACCESS, PRESERVE ALL SHELTER NODES]

[DEFEAT: FOURTEEN PROTECTED BLOCKS WILL BE CUT FREE]

[SEVERED BLOCKS WILL BE LOADED INTO THE ROOK WARSHIP AS LIVING WEAPON FORGES]

Mutual Shelter answered before Jace could.

Fourteen blue doors appeared around the arena. Eleven stood fully open. Two remained open only along the narrow routes their holders had approved. One stayed gray and closed, exactly as its holder had chosen the night before. The arena pulled at every door. None of them moved.

[NO PARTICIPANT HAS BEEN OVERRIDDEN]

"Good," Jace said.

The sand exploded.

Six weapon-beasts climbed out of the arena floor. A boar the size of a delivery truck dragged a body made from spinning cleavers. A stag rose behind it with halberds branching from both antlers. A centipede of linked swords curled around the spectator tiers. Three more shapes moved under the sand, carving glowing red wakes toward the civilians.

[WEAPON-BEAST DETECTED: CLEAVER BOAR, LEVEL 410]

[WEAPON-BEAST DETECTED: HALBERD STAG, LEVEL 402]

[ADDITIONAL WEAPON-BEASTS: 4]

[THE ARENA HAS DECIDED THE DUEL NEEDS MORE DUEL]

Jace's status opened above his shoulder.

[HEALTH: 43/420]

[CHARGE: 19/140]

A Rook soldier on the warship read the numbers and laughed through the arena speakers. "Level nine hundred and ninety-nine. Forty-three Health. Is the legend a joke?"

"It is a limited-time joke," Jace said.

The Cleaver Boar screamed through a mouth full of knives and charged the nearest spectator tier.

Jace ran.

He took the first ten steps at human speed. The boar crossed the arena like a truck fired from a cannon. At the final stride, Jace spent three Charge on Static Step. The world slipped sideways, and the beast passed close enough to shave the sleeve from his jacket.

[CHARGE: 19 -> 16]

Jace emerged behind it and drove six Charge into Rule Fracture. The arena had given the beast one perfect law. Every edge cut.

Jace broke it.

Thousands of cleavers went blunt at once. The sound rolled through the colosseum like an avalanche of dropped plates. The boar stumbled, confused by a body that could push but no longer slice.

[CHARGE: 16 -> 10]

Jace planted an Error Mark in the pale knot of arena wiring between its shoulders. Four more Charge vanished.

[CHARGE: 10 -> 6]

The mark flashed.

The boar forgot which direction meant forward. It spun across the sand, accelerated toward the arena wall, and struck headfirst. The entire southern tier jumped. Stone split. Red chains shattered across two hundred seats.

[CLEAVER BOAR: DEFEATED]

[SPECTATOR RESTRAINTS DESTROYED: 204]

[ROOK TRIAL ACCESS: INITIATED]

The Halberd Stag cleared the arena rim before Jace could turn. It passed through the red barrier, landed in the evacuation lane, and lowered twelve blade-tipped antlers toward a line of civilians.

Scarlett stepped in front of it.

Her red sword met all twelve halberds. The collision bent two streetlamps flat and drove her boots through the pavement to her ankles.

"Liam," she said into the radio. "I have one stag."

"I have three hundred civilians and six monsters," Liam answered. "Keep yours."

"Gladly."

She twisted her blade, threw the stag sideways, and sent it through three overturned buses. Behind her, Liam directed people through the cracks Jace had opened in the arena wall. Mateo's crews attacked those cracks with saws and pry bars while the sword-centipede climbed down the stands after them.

A gold window opened above Jace.

Seraphina sat in the clinic with bloodless lips and one hand pressed against her ribs. She had forced the Free Accord open for six seconds.

"The arena is not the enemy," she said. "Look up."

Breach Sight followed the fourteen red cables into the clouds. Inside the warship's open belly, Jace saw a second colosseum growing around a heart the size of a skyscraper. Every weapon-beast below was only one tooth in its mouth.

"The ship is feeding it," Seraphina said. "Break this arena, and the ship will grow another. Reach the heart."

The window closed. Her six seconds were gone.

Alexander had crossed half the sand without interfering. Rain hissed against his sword. The new mark over his heart burned through his breastplate like a coal.

"You protected them before attacking me," he said. "Rook training calls that wasted motion."

"Rook training puts chains on spectators."

"Not mine."

Alexander moved.

The first cut arrived faster than the boar. Jace dropped beneath it. The second opened the rain where his throat had been. He prepared Static Step, but the arena tilted under his left foot and threw his balance toward Alexander.

The third strike crossed Jace's ribs.

Blood warmed his shirt.

[HEALTH: 43 -> 31]

Alexander stepped back instead of pressing the wound. He looked disappointed, not pleased.

"Stand up," he said. "Show me why a warship came for one exhausted man."

Jace rose with six Charge, thirty-one Health, and a smile that made Alexander tighten his grip.

"You brought a warship," Jace said. "I was worried this would be unfair."

Alexander attacked again.

Jace triggered Static Step. The red sword touched the edge of the skill, cut through the blue light, and peeled the ability out of his body like a strip of burning wire.

[SKILL SEALED: STATIC STEP]

[ALEXANDER ROOK CAN CUT EQUIPPED SKILLS]

[FIVE ACTIVE SKILLS REMAIN]

Above them, the warship opened its mouth wider.

Health: 31/420.

Charge: 6/140.
