Level 999: The Glitch King
Chapter 134: The Debt Ledger
The six-hour window began at 5:17 p.m. Madison wrote the closing time on three walls because she did not trust a noble countdown to remain visible during an attack. Jackson repeated it over the radios and added that nobody had to announce a decision publicly.
The Sunchain ledger did the opposite. It placed every named person under a gold marker and sorted them by recoverability.
The categories changed how the landing crews looked at the crowd. People marked physically available received green paths to the recovery frame. Anyone listed as remote produced a search radius over the city. Archive identities created a gold line that ended inside Jace's body. Liam ordered the paths removed from the local map. The House complied on the visible layer while the orbital vessel continued calculating above them.
RECOVERED-ASSET LIST
Vault identities released: 412.
Recovery-vessel survivors: 12.
Confirmed Free Claims on Earth: 14.
Archive Council identities: 18,438.
Physically available for return review: 26.
Remote or dispersed persons: LOCATION REVIEW ACTIVE.
Current group representative: Jace, disputed.
Jace selected the final line.
"I do not represent them."
SYSTEM CORRECTION
Statement issued by territorial claimant.
Protected persons referenced: 26.
Representative authority inferred.
Ownership weight: +1.
He stopped speaking. One sentence denying authority had created authority because the registry recognized only owners, claimants, and Houses at the negotiating table.
Jace tried written text next. He placed I DO NOT DECIDE on Nora's board and held it toward the record. The registry classified the sign as a claimant directive and added no ownership because it did not identify a protected class. When Noah stood beside the sign, the System connected the meaning to him and restored the same inference. Language became dangerous only when a person needed it.
David Marek saw the increase. "One point is better than Sunchain taking everyone."
Noah shook his head. "One point becomes precedent."
"Precedent will not keep my core from tearing."
David's Health dipped on the public clinic monitor. Emma asked permission before displaying it, and he granted it because he wanted everyone arguing about freedom to see what delay cost.
DAVID MAREK
Health: 57% -> 54%.
Pathway integrity: 31%.
Estimated decline without treatment: 6% per day.
Local stabilization probability: 22%.
Sunchain recovery-core probability: 81%.
The numbers did not choose for him. They made his preference harder for everyone else to treat as fear.
Joseph examined David in the clinic doorway. "Your left pathway is degrading. The Sunchain core may stabilize it."
David looked at him. "Would you use it?"
"If the choice were mine, I would demand a local installation."
Charlotte refused that amendment because a recovery core remained House property until installation finished. Madison offered to let Sunchain physicians work inside the clinic under local rules. The House refused because its physicians could not guarantee a result without medical authority.
Both sides described the other's safeguard as interference.
William asked Ardent for a written promise that choosing an identity hearing would not count as Sunchain return. Penelope provided one, then warned that Sunchain could challenge it. He accepted the warning and scheduled a hearing for after the collective decision window. His choice helped him and complicated the group's defense. Jace did not ask him to wait.
FREED-HEIR FACTION VOTE
Motion: Authorize Jace to answer the Sunchain accord for the group.
Eligible voters present: 26.
Yes: 7.
No: 9.
Undeclared: 10.
Unity requirement: 18.
Motion status: FAILED.
Trust toward Jace after vote:
Protective claim supporters: +12.

Individual-choice supporters: +7.
Immediate-return supporters: -8.
Jace had protected the right to disagree and received three different reputations for the same decision.
Lucas wanted another vote after everyone heard the defense risk. Sophia refused because repeating a vote until the answer changed would make the first vote decorative. Scarlett suggested a temporary military command limited to the landing zones. Grace asked whether anyone under that command could withdraw during combat.
The System offered Jace six ways to turn concern into control. He accepted none.
Charlotte requested a formal answer at the halfway point. Olivia stood beside Jace with a legal pad while Noah and David waited on opposite sides of the courtyard.
"Earth accepts or rejects the accord," Charlotte said.
Jace answered, "Ask the people named in it."
REPRESENTATIVE STATEMENT DETECTED
Protected class referenced.
Decision delegated by claimant.
Ownership weight: +1.
"Stop," Olivia said.
Jace closed his mouth. The ownership meter remained at two.
Olivia addressed Charlotte. "Your filing requires one collective answer because your law refuses individual standing. Every attempt to redirect the question becomes evidence that he controls the group."
"I did not design the registry," Charlotte said.
"You chose to file through it."
Charlotte accepted the accusation. "Without the filing, three other Houses would have submitted worse claims before my ship reached Earth."
Penelope confirmed that statement from the western landing. Ardent had blocked two sealed petitions that treated the Safe Zone population as derivative Crownline property. Charlotte's claim occupied the recovery window and prevented a broader seizure.
The revelation helped her without making her right.
Alexander Rook used the pause to renew his challenge and offered to settle Earth's standing through combat before Sunchain's timer expired. Liam rejected the schedule under delegated defense authority. The System notified Jace after the refusal instead of asking him to approve it. Alexander accepted Liam's standing to answer and moved the duel window. Even the martial House adjusted faster to distributed authority than the recovery registry did.
Oliver Crane drew a narrow box around the phrase current group representative. "The registry needs a recognized party to receive the answers. It does not require that party to choose them."
Olivia followed the distinction. "Jace can serve as a conduit if each statement remains attached to its speaker."
"The System will still try to aggregate them," Penelope said.
"Then we preserve every failed attempt."
Jace opened Breach Sight across the recovered-asset list. A seam ran between representation and control, thin enough that every spoken word could close it.
REPRESENTATION OPTIONS
Collective acceptance: AVAILABLE.
Collective refusal: AVAILABLE.
Individual testimony conduit: UNRECOGNIZED.
Create provisional conduit: Possible through repeated verified statements.
Failure risk: Statements aggregated as claimant decision.
David read the panel. "And if our answers split?"
"Then they split," Jace said.
The System added another point of ownership. Jace left it visible.
Nora arranged twenty-six chairs in one line. Nobody stood behind Jace. Each person would approach the record alone, state a choice or refuse to state one, and leave without explanation. Jace would carry the signal because the registry demanded a representative, but he would not summarize, recommend, or answer.
The Safe Zone council approved the process. The freed heirs did not vote as one body because the process existed to prevent a single answer.
Charlotte moved the recovery frame to the end of the line. Penelope opened a parallel provenance record. Jackson aimed every camera at the testimony panel.
Jace turned the decision over to the freed people.
