Level 999: The Glitch King
Chapter 135: Corrupted Testimony
Noah Venn took the first chair. Jace remained ten feet away with both hands open, while the registry connected the testimony channel to his disputed representative status.
Olivia read the rules once. "State your name if you want it recorded. You may accept return, refuse return, request more time, or give no answer. You do not owe anyone a reason."
Jace gave no speech. The absence bothered the System enough to produce a prompt.
REPRESENTATIVE INTRODUCTION REQUIRED
Recommended statement: I present the following protected subject.
Alternative statement: I authorize this testimony.
Silence penalty: Testimony validity -10%.
He selected neither statement.
Noah leaned toward the record. "Noah Venn."
Identity confirmation passed through Jace and returned with a gold distortion around the name.
VOLUNTARY-RETURN QUEST
Participant: Noah Venn.
Offer: Sunchain Restoration Accord.
Return reward: Core stabilization, House protection, identity review.
Refusal risk: Medical decline, hostile recovery action, loss of House standing.
Choice: PENDING.
Noah looked at Charlotte. "No."
The panel rejected the answer before his mouth closed.
Jackson's radio captured the spoken refusal without distortion. Avery wrote the word and time in the paper ledger. Penelope's provenance array recorded the same sound from the edge of its permitted range. Three independent records agreed before the Sunchain interface finished calculating why the answer should not count.
TESTIMONY REVIEW
Speaker identity: 82% stable.
Prior suspension contamination: PRESENT.
Free Claim influence: PRESENT.
Archive exposure: POSSIBLE.
Independent refusal validity: 34%.
Classification: CORRUPTED TESTIMONY.
Choice status: UNRESOLVED.
Nobody in the courtyard spoke. Noah read the result, then faced Charlotte.
The recovery frame remained open behind her. Its medical field detected the instability in Noah's reconstructed pathways and offered treatment automatically. When he did not move, the frame logged noncompliance as another possible symptom of identity damage. The House's proof kept producing itself from any behavior that opposed the House.
"Your House stored pieces of me in separate drawers," he said. "Now the damage is why my answer does not count."
Charlotte stepped closer to the record. "Raise identity stability to the admissible threshold."
The Sunchain registry refused.
Required threshold: 80%.
Current independent stability after House modifiers: 34%.
Recognized corrective authority: Registered owner or claimant.
David looked at Jace. The protective subject panel reopened by itself.
"You could make it count," he said.
David's request held no accusation. He was asking Jace to use a bad tool because the clean tools had failed at the first voice. William watched from the second chair with his Ardent hearing appointment visible over one wrist. If Jace claimed Noah to protect a refusal, Sunchain could use that ownership precedent against William's separate agreement before he reached the ship.
Noah stayed in the chair. "He would make me count by claiming the answer."
Jace used Breach Sight on the refusal instead of the ownership route. The testimony carried three separate things: Noah's identity, Noah's choice, and the registry's judgment about whether the choice deserved legal force. Sunchain had fused the judgment to the choice.
The seam was visible because the record still preserved Noah's exact word.
Jace's Corruption Load rose one point while Breach Sight held the three layers apart. The Archive Council stirred at the term corrupted. Hundreds of identities remembered courts that had rejected testimony after torture changed a witness's speech. Amelia kept the memories from flooding the query. Zoey marked the present courtyard, Noah's face, and the smell of Madison's cooking fires as anchors until Jace could separate his own anger from theirs.
CORRUPTION LOAD: 85% -> 86%.
Identity confidence: 79%.
Archive interference: CONTAINED.
Jace selected his own representative status.
DISPUTED REPRESENTATIVE ACTIONS

Challenge testimony classification.
Withdraw representation.
He could not refuse for Noah without increasing ownership. He chose the third action.
"I challenge the classification," Jace said.
Ownership weight did not move.
Grounds required.
Olivia pointed at the record. "The registry preserved the statement accurately. It used damage caused during Sunchain custody to disqualify a choice against Sunchain custody. That is a conflict of interest, not identity proof."
Penelope authenticated the source chain. "The word recorded matches the spoken testimony."
Charlotte added her seal. "Sunchain confirms the recording is accurate."
The gold registry hesitated.
LEGAL EXPLOIT DISCOVERED
Representative Refusal Lv. 1.
Function: A recognized representative may refuse a benefit, claim, or classification applied through that representative without choosing for the speaker.
Limitation: Does not validate underlying testimony.
Effect: Prevents unresolved testimony from becoming presumed consent.
Jace selected the Sunchain presumption attached to Noah's record.
REPRESENTATIVE REFUSAL
Target: Silence-after-notification consent presumption.
Result: REFUSED.
Noah's choice remained legally unresolved, but Sunchain could no longer convert that unresolved status into consent.
Charlotte ordered the recovery frame to stop highlighting Noah's path. Her representative objected that the House had not recognized his refusal. "He is not walking toward us," Charlotte said. "The frame does not require a legal theory to observe distance." The path vanished. Sunchain hostility still increased because Charlotte's local command could not rewrite the registry that had produced it.
The Glitch Protocol expanded the result.
[QUEST ITEM ACQUIRED]
Corrupted-Testimony Evidence.
Recorded statement: PRESERVED.
Classification conflict: VERIFIED.
Use: Challenge House testimony standards.
FREE HEIR COUNCIL UNLOCKED
Membership: Individual opt-in.
Collective authority: NONE by default.
Shared counsel: AVAILABLE.
Right to issue separate positions: PRESERVED.
Jace control: 0%.
Faction changes followed.
House Sunchain hostility: -48 -> -61.
Noah Venn trust: +14.
David Marek trust: -6.
William Frost trust: +2.
Free Heir Council toward Jace: VARIABLE.
The word VARIABLE remained after every other field settled. The System could not turn the new council into a loyalty score because its members had not chosen one position. Jace received no universal trust bonus, no command access, and no automatic party link. For once, a progression reward gave him less control than he had possessed before unlocking it.
Charlotte read the changes without withdrawing her seal. "You found a way to block presumed consent."
"For this testimony."
"The next one may receive a different ruling."
"Then the next person gets their own fight."
David's pain sharpened across his face. He wanted treatment more than a legal victory. William still wanted a ship willing to take him on terms he could accept. Noah wanted his refusal to exist without Jace's title holding it upright. Their interests had not become cleaner because the first exploit worked.
Nora opened enrollment for the Free Heir Council. Noah opted in. David requested time. William joined while reserving the right to negotiate with Ardent. Seven others chose private counsel, and three refused any faction membership.
The second chair waited for William. Before he sat, one of the dark contacts above the river changed position. Jackson reported the movement, and Liam sent the warning through delegated channels without interrupting the testimony process. The wider threat kept moving while the Safe Zone spent time protecting a single word. Nobody suggested that made the word less important.
The new council did not form behind Jace. It formed beside the testimony line, where its members could disagree with him and still share records.
Noah remained the first speaker. He had given the simplest answer available. The registry had preserved the sound, confirmed the words, and rejected the person who said them.
The first freed heir said no. The registry marked the refusal as corrupted testimony.
