Level 999: The Glitch King
Chapter 133: House Sunchain
Charlotte's words silenced the courtyard long enough for the gold ship to place a ledger above her. The projection rose higher than the barricade and divided itself into thousands of lines. Each line carried an acquisition date, preservation cost, maintenance charge, or loss assessment.
Charlotte looked at Noah before she looked at Jace. "I objected to this classification during the House Trial. My objection did not alter the charter."
"You still said it," Noah replied.
"Yes."
"Then read what your House calls me."
Charlotte faced the ledger.
HOUSE SUNCHAIN DEBT LEDGER
Vault construction and preservation: 8,440,000 Charge.
Indexed heirs released: 412.
Recovery-vessel patients removed: 12.
Lost suspension Charge: 631,800.
Damaged Collector bodies: 19.
Destroyed Collector bodies: 7.
Recovery vessel destroyed: 1.
House personnel dead: 6.
Archived identities removed from custody: 18,438.
Unauthorized preservation performed by Jace: 14 events.
Accrued legal cost: 98,210 Charge.
Total assessed debt: 11,704,610 Charge.
The number produced a visible response from the crowd. People who had ignored noble titles understood what a debt that large could do to a city with less than five days of food.
Madison divided the total by the protected population on paper, then stopped when the result became obscene. Jackson asked whether the ledger included the value of labor Sunchain had extracted from conscious prisoners. Charlotte ordered the figure displayed. The House registry returned no category for involuntary prisoner labor because preserved assets could not earn wages. A debt precise to the final ten Charge contained no place to record what the prisoners had paid.
Theodore stood beyond the clinic line with visitor status still active. His broken recovery core dimmed when the destroyed vessel appeared on the ledger. "Sebastian died stopping the cleanup protocol," he said. "Your total prices the vessel. Where is he?"
Charlotte searched the personnel loss entry. Sebastian's name appeared as a recovery commander, then disappeared beneath the category of operational loss. She forced the subrecord open and left it visible beside the Charge assessment.
Jace opened Breach Sight. Most of the ledger was authenticated. Sunchain had built the vault, supplied Charge, repaired bodies, and lost people during the cleanup. The arithmetic did not need to be false to make the conclusion monstrous.
Breach Sight found another contradiction inside Jace's unauthorized preservation charges. Sunchain billed him for keeping fourteen people alive outside registered custody, while the same ledger demanded compensation for every prisoner who died during the cleanup. If he had allowed the survivors to die, the House would have charged him for destruction. Saving them created a different bill. The ledger was built to prove debt regardless of what happened to the person inside it.
Charlotte opened the forgiveness offer.
SUNCHAIN RESTORATION ACCORD
Earth debt forgiven: 100%.
Military recovery action: WAIVED.
Safe Zone territorial claim: WITHDRAWN.
Jace custodial claim: WITHDRAWN.
Required condition: Voluntary return of recovered heirs.
Medical stabilization: GUARANTEED.
Punitive confinement: PROHIBITED.
Response window: 06:00:00.
It was the most reasonable offer Sunchain could have made while keeping the premise that people were owed back.
No warship withdrawal clause depended on Jace surrendering. No penalty transferred to the children behind the barricade. The House even accepted the Free Claim records as evidence that return had to be spoken rather than inferred from physical capture. Charlotte had spent political strength to make the offer better. That made the remaining ownership language harder to dismiss as the work of someone who enjoyed cruelty.

David Marek moved closer to the projection. His pathway scars had spread up his neck since morning. "If we return, do you fix every damaged core?"
"Every recoverable core," Charlotte said.
"And Earth owes nothing?"
"Nothing under this action."
Olivia raised one hand. "Leave the panel open."
Charlotte did.
Olivia read the clauses beneath the visible promises. "Voluntary return begins a recovery review. Recovery review restores prior House jurisdiction. Prior jurisdiction includes treatment authority. Treatment authority permits sedation, pathway restraint, memory verification, and suspension when medically indicated."
David's attention remained on the guaranteed treatment line.
"Does a returner keep the right to leave?" Olivia asked.
Charlotte's representative answered. "After stabilization and identity review."
"Who decides when those are complete?"
"House physicians and registry officers."
"Can the patient refuse suspension?"
"If refusal creates a preservation risk, no."
The offer remained generous. The trap was that Sunchain defined safety, recovery, and completion after the person crossed the frame.
Penelope entered the accord into the Ardent record and marked each promise enforceable under current House law. Then she marked the withdrawal right absent. The two findings sat together. Sunchain could be forced to provide the treatment it promised. The patient could still be forced to remain for as long as Sunchain called the treatment incomplete.
TESTIMONY VALIDITY METER
Local testimony: 61% admissible.
Sunchain registry testimony: 100% admissible.
Recovered-heir statements: 27% admissible.
Penalty sources:
Prior suspension.
Unregistered release.
Archive exposure.
Possible identity contamination.
Noah stared at the percentages. "They damaged us, so their court trusts us less."
Charlotte's face tightened. "The meter predates this dispute."
"So did the cells."
David turned to Jace. "Claim us."
The request moved through the courtyard like a physical force.
Seven people reacted with relief before Jace opened the panel. Four recoiled. William Frost moved away from David as if the request itself had become a wall. David noticed every response and kept speaking because pain had made the future smaller than the principle everyone else wanted him to defend.
"If your title lists us as subjects, Sunchain has to negotiate with you," David continued. "You can refuse the return. You can keep them from deciding we are too broken to speak."
The Glitch Protocol opened the route immediately.
PROTECTIVE SUBJECT CLAIM
Eligible persons: 424.
Immediate testimony stability: +38%.
Collective defense bonus: +22%.
Jace Authority: +40.
Withdrawal during active dispute: LOCKED.
Transferability through title defeat: ENABLED.
Noah stepped between David and the panel. "If he claims us, the next person who beats him inherits the argument."
"We could survive long enough to solve that."
"You do not know that."
"I know what my body feels like."
Olivia closed neither option. "Representation can be granted for one decision. Ownership continues after the decision unless we break it again."
Charlotte watched Jace. She understood why the offer tempted him because her House had built its identity around the same temptation. Claim them now. Protect them first. Repair freedom later.
He left the subject panel open where everyone could see the cost.
Charlotte's forgiveness offer remained beside it, reasonable enough to divide the people it named. If the recovered heirs returned voluntarily, she would forgive Earth every line of the debt.
