Level 999: The Glitch King
Chapter 130: The Houses Arrive
The first ship reached the eastern approach without touching the ground. Its gold recovery ring stopped above the avenue and lowered a square of light onto the broken pavement. Every person beneath the ring received the same filing before any passenger appeared.
HOUSE SUNCHAIN RECOVERY NOTICE
Claimants sought: 412 indexed heirs.
Additional persons sought: 12 recovered passengers.
Archive-resident identities: REVIEW PENDING.
Requested remedy: Voluntary return or custodial hearing.
Earth response status: UNRECOGNIZED.
Madison moved the breakfast line behind the eastern bus barricade and kept serving. Liam closed one vehicle gap, opened an evacuation route through the laundry building, and sent Scarlett to the south wall. Jackson told every radio post to record the House broadcasts without repeating their language as fact.
The delegated network acted before Jace finished reading the notice.
The Sunchain light divided. A woman in a gold-edged recovery coat stepped through with two unarmed attendants and an empty transport frame. Charlotte Sunchain remained aboard the vessel as a life-sized projection. The delay between her movements and the light around her shoulders revealed that the ship was still correcting for atmospheric interference.
"We are here to recover House persons," Charlotte said.
Noah Venn stood beside the intake table. "You found people."
The representative on the pavement did not look at him. "Unverified testimony cannot alter a registered claim."
Two children watched from the second-floor laundry window until Liam sent a runner to pull the curtain. The Sunchain attendants noticed the movement and added the building to their recovery map. Jackson caught the change through his radio feed and demanded its removal. They complied, then logged his demand as evidence that Earth exercised organized custody over the occupants. Even asking a House to stop watching people could become proof that somebody else owned them.
Jace's Breach Sight opened across the landing protocol.
TARGET ANALYSIS
House Sunchain recovery party.
Immediate threat: LOW.
Orbital threat: HIGH.
Primary weapon: Custody recognition.
Secondary weapon: Medical dependency.
Active contradiction: Voluntary return requested from persons classified as property.
Charlotte saw him reading. "Do not mistake a contradiction for safety."
"I wasn't planning to."
The southern ship struck the atmosphere hard enough to shake glass from an abandoned office tower. It stopped above Liam's chosen challenge ground, a parking lot cleared of sleeping quarters and water lines. A red-armored herald dropped from the open hull, landed on one knee, and drove a broad blade into the asphalt.
Alexander Rook appeared above the weapon as a remote image. He looked much as Jace remembered him, except a fresh silver mark crossed the armor over his heart.
HOUSE ROOK CHALLENGE ENTRY
Challenger: Alexander Rook.
Target: Jace, Candidate Index ZERO.
Terms: Formal combat for succession standing.
Civilian collateral: PROHIBITED BY CHALLENGER.
Refusal consequence: Earth martial standing reduced.
Arrival range: ATMOSPHERIC.
"You survived extraction," Alexander said.
"Barely."
"That does not cancel my challenge."
"I missed you too."
Liam examined the blade before letting anyone approach. The challenge field ended thirty feet from the nearest barricade. Alexander had chosen a violent method and respected the boundary more carefully than Sunchain respected a person.
Scarlett circled the blade with her red weapon lowered. The herald gave her the formal salute reserved for a noble combatant, then hesitated when no House title appeared over her head. Scarlett did not supply one. The omission made the herald study her more carefully than a rank would have. On the west wall, Aurora warned that she remembered a Rook landing ending with the challenge ground swallowing a city block. She also admitted that the memory belonged to another Earth. Liam moved the spectators back anyway.
The narrative has been taken without permission. Report any sightings.
The western craft landed last. It unfolded silver panels as it descended, turning the side of the vessel into a temporary records hall. Penelope Ardent walked down the ramp carrying no weapon. Two archivists followed with their hands visible and their access seals closed.
She stopped outside Jackson's communication line.
"Permission to record local names only after individual consent," she said.
Jackson lowered his radio. "That is the first useful sentence anybody brought."
HOUSE ARDENT CONTACT OFFER
Recognition offered: Conditional.
Custody requested: NONE.
Requested access: Archive provenance review.
Data extraction range: 400 meters.
Current array status: CLOSED.
Hidden collection processes: 0 detected.
Penelope looked at the final line. "Keep checking."
Three residents volunteered their names for Ardent verification, while five others covered their faces and left the western street. Penelope ordered her archivists not to follow. The records array could prove it had stayed closed, but nobody on Earth could verify what the ship above it had already collected. Jackson assigned a camera to the hull and another to the people watching the hull. His suspicion became part of the public record before Ardent could call it ignorance.
A fourth person entered through the space between the landing zones. His shuttle had no major House banner, only a small gray crane worked into the door. He wore a plain coat and carried three paper folders.
"Oliver Crane," he said. "My House owns no claim worth frightening you with. I arrange conversations between people who would rather invoice one another than listen."
Olivia accepted one folder without opening it. "Who hired you?"
"Everyone who expects these talks to fail."
The System tried to combine the arrivals into one diplomatic event. Their permissions would not fit. Sunchain claimed custody, Rook claimed challenge rights, and Ardent requested records. Crane occupied the procedural gaps none of them controlled.
FACTION CONTACT DASHBOARD UNLOCKED
Local party: Earth Safe Zone.
System recognition: UNRECOGNIZED PARTY.
House Sunchain: HOSTILE RECOVERY INTEREST.
House Rook: ADVERSARIAL CHALLENGE INTEREST.
House Ardent: CONDITIONAL RECORD INTEREST.
House Crane: TRANSACTIONAL NEUTRALITY.
Accepting aid may create standing, debt, or behavioral expectations.
The three unidentified contacts remained beyond the active descent lanes. One drifted above the river without lights. Another hid behind the Rook vessel's heat trail. The last object held a position so high that only the Spire and Jackson's patched antenna could agree it existed. None filed a claim. Their silence forced Liam to keep fighters away from the landing talks, exactly where the visible Houses wanted them.
Jace read the last warning twice. The major Houses had arrived with different methods, but each offer contained a version of Earth that already belonged inside its rules.
William Frost pushed forward from the voluntary intake line. His skin still carried pale seams where Sunchain suspension bands had held him together. "Which one will take people who choose to leave?"
Lucas caught his arm. William pulled free before the grip settled.
"He said we were free," William said, looking at Jace. "I want that answer while the ships are here."
Charlotte's representative opened the recovery frame. Alexander's herald raised the challenge blade. Penelope kept the records array closed. Three protocols waited for Jace to choose who spoke first.
He stepped beside Noah and William instead of in front of them.
"You can make offers to people," Jace said. "You cannot negotiate with me as if they are inventory."
