Level 999: The Glitch King

Chapter 128: They Did Not Wait for Him

  • Next Chapter

The first rule Nora showed Jace concerned emergency water. No title holder could redirect more than one tank without approval from the sanitation crew and the people assigned to ration distribution. His name appeared once in the margin as an example of someone the rule applied to.

"You wrote a policy about me."

"You were gone," Nora said. "We needed the water to stay here."

Grace handed him the refusal log. Six people had declined anchor roles during his absence. All six still received food, treatment, and barrier coverage. Two volunteers had withdrawn after the first week. Liam had removed their permissions without asking why.

Jace returned the log. "Looks better than my version."

"It is a version you did not build," Grace said.

The difference reached him before he could answer. A warning sounded from the west shelter, followed by the metallic cough of the water purifier trying to push pressure through a dry line. Madison closed the ration board and ran.

The purifier occupied an old laundry room. Steam covered the ceiling. Scarlett held a cracked intake pipe together with both hands while James's crew fitted a brace beneath it. Aurora stood near the controls, describing a valve arrangement from a prior Earth cycle and warning everyone that the memory might belong to another building.

Jace opened the Council before Madison finished asking for tools. The available expert did not arrive as a skill tag. An older man named Hale Orsen volunteered a memory of repairing the same purifier model aboard a freight habitat. Zoey confirmed direct experience. Amelia asked whether he wanted the memory copied or narrated.

"Narrated," Hale said through Jace. "My hands were mine."

The laundry room became a freight corridor for one breath. Jace smelled metal dust and bitter coolant. His fingers remembered scars they did not carry. Hale directed him toward a pressure collar behind the purifier, then stopped the memory before his dead partner entered it.

Jace repeated the instruction. James removed the collar and found a strip of melted sealant blocking the return channel. Madison sent a runner for a replacement.

Foreign memory retained: 0.

The answer saved more than two hours. The cost arrived during Nora's next question.

"Which tank did Madison reserve for the clinic?" she asked.

Jace saw a freight habitat's red emergency cylinder. He answered, "Deck four."

Everyone in the laundry room went quiet.

There was no deck four.

Hale withdrew from the query immediately. Zoey marked the foreign location. Jace pressed his scarred thumbnail into his palm and named the Safe Zone, the laundry room, and the broken north block. The freight corridor released him.

Corruption Load: 85%.

Hale remained at the edge of the Council long enough to apologize. Jace told him the mistake belonged to the way the memory crossed, not to the man who had volunteered it. Amelia recorded the difference beside the query so the next search would carry the warning before anyone agreed.

Grace watched him close the Council. "You searched before Madison asked."

"The reserve had seventeen hours."

"The crew had a manual inspection route."

"It took almost three hours."

Nora pointed toward James, Scarlett, Aurora, and the volunteers already repairing the pipe. "They were working before you opened anything."

Jace looked at the melted sealant. The query had helped. It had also made every living person in the room pause and wait for his borrowed answer.

Madison returned with the replacement collar. "I am using the Archive fix. I am also writing the manual route down, because next time you may be unconscious, missing, or wrong."

Aurora touched the old valve map. "My remembered layout placed the bypass on the opposite wall. The memory was real. The wall belonged to another reset."

Scarlett released the intake pipe after James locked the brace. "Unreliable knowledge can still cut."

"So can reliable knowledge used by one exhausted person," Sophia said.

Lucas glanced toward the barrier. "The Houses will not give us three hours to inspect anything."

"Then we build teams that can answer faster," Sophia said. "We do not build one person who has to answer everything."

The purifier restarted. Water moved through the clear inspection tube without turning gold or asking who owned it.

WATER SYSTEM RESTORED

Purifier output: 14% -> 73%.

Reserve estimate: 17 hours -> 61 hours.

Archive solution used: YES.

Local repair record created: YES.

Dependency on Archive host: REDUCED.

Jace expected the System to award the repair to him. The contribution panel divided it among Hale, Madison, James, Scarlett, the sanitation crew, and the runner who had found the collar. Jace appeared as one participant.

He spent the next hour learning what else had changed. Food teams rotated without his title. Watch captains could close their own gates. Emma controlled medical reserve. Nora scheduled public rule reviews. Jackson kept a radio channel outside the System network in case every official panel lied at once.

Jace felt relief first. Nobody had let the Safe Zone collapse while waiting for him.

The unease came behind it. Protection had become a role people could perform without centering him, which meant returning home did not restore the shape he remembered.

Liam handed him a watch schedule. "You are on the west wall at midnight."

"No throne?"

"Jackson needed the chair for a radio."

Jace looked across the courtyard at the work continuing without his permission. He was relieved and unsettled to learn that protecting people did not require them to wait for his orders.
