Level 999: The Glitch King
Chapter 127: Return to Ruins
Jace led the return group through streets that had learned new rules while he was gone. The old north gate remained buried beneath the block that Crown Tax had destroyed. A double line of salvaged buses now formed the outer barricade, with firing gaps cut high enough to keep children from looking through them.
Banners cast foreign colors across the broken windows. The return group passed chalk arrows marking clinic routes, black paint marking unsafe floors, and small blue handprints showing which buildings had been checked for sleeping children. None of the signs used System glyphs. People had made them for anyone who could read a wall.
Breach Sight moved across the work before anyone greeted him. Steel braces carried three different signatures. Liam had approved the defensive placement. James had rejected two load-bearing angles. A maintenance note in Madison's handwriting warned that moving the eastern bus would cut the food route in half.
None of the decisions carried Jace's authority.
SAFE ZONE APPROACH SCAN
Outer barricades: 3 -> 7.
Independent watch rotations: 4.
Civilian evacuation lanes: 2.
North block restoration: 31%.
Barrier integrity: 64%.
Unauthorized claimant commands: 0.
Jace kept walking.
The first patrol met them beneath a traffic light powered by a wire that ran through an apartment window. Scarlett Vey stood at the front with a broad red blade resting against one shoulder. She looked human until Breach Sight revealed the layered bones around her heart and the noble restraints burned into both wrists.
"Fifteen incoming," she called toward the barricade. "Three require stretchers. One has an active title. Two carry Sunchain signatures."
Liam answered over Jackson's radio. "Medical team to lane two. Keep weapons visible and pointed down. Jace can wait."
Scarlett's mouth moved at the corner. "Your king has returned."
"He still knows how lines work."
Jace raised both hands where the patrol could see them. Seraphina did the same before anyone asked. Theodore hesitated, then lowered the broken House seal at his side.
The medical team reached the patients first. Emma checked the ten recovered people while Joseph explained their treatment history. Liam came through the inner gate carrying a shield brace, gave Jace one look, and pointed Theodore toward a marked waiting area.
"Sunchain signatures stay outside the clinic until Olivia reads the terms," Liam said.
Theodore glanced at Jace.
"He told you," Jace said.
Liam passed the brace to a volunteer. "Good. You still understand sentences."
The welcome ended there because the western watch needed two more people. Liam reassigned the patrol without asking Jace whether Scarlett could leave the gate. She obeyed Liam's field call, not Jace's title, and kept watching Theodore as she moved.
James's crew opened only one section of the barricade. The arrivals entered in pairs while Jackson recorded names people volunteered and left blank spaces for the rest. A recovered man offered his Sunchain catalogue number. Jackson asked whether he wanted it written down. The man said no, and the radio log kept an empty line.
Aurora Dain waited inside the barricade beside an old subway map. Silver lines crossed her dark eyes whenever she looked at damaged concrete. She touched the map without claiming certainty.
"This gate existed in another Earth cycle," she said. "The tower stood farther east then."
Stolen from its rightful place, this narrative is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.
Lucas folded his arms. "There was no other gate."
"I remember one."
Sophia checked the map against the repaired street. "She also remembers a river where Madison built the kitchen."
Aurora nodded. "My memories are incomplete. That does not make all of them useless."
Scarlett returned in time to hear the exchange. "It makes them dangerous during defense."
Lucas wanted the freed heirs formed into a separate fighting body before the Houses arrived. Sophia wanted each person asked whether they wanted any faction at all. Their argument had already filled two handwritten pages on Nora's board.
Jace's arrival gave neither side an answer.
The System restored his territory connection after confirming that Liam's temporary shield authority had remained within its limits.

Jace and Seraphina returned outside the intake count. Theodore declined intake and requested visitor status. The System tried to classify his choice as evasion, while Olivia marked it as a refusal and kept his medical access unchanged. Elijah, Joseph, and the ten recovered passengers entered the voluntary review queue.
Theodore read the result. "Your shelter allows a suspected enemy to refuse membership."
"It also lets us make you wait outside the clinic," Olivia said.
"I noticed."
Nora led Jace past the intake lane. The classrooms had become sleeping rooms. The west hall held food distribution. Jackson's radios occupied the old office. Every door carried a sign written by the people using the room. None called it Jace's.
The Archive reacted to the Safe Zone in uneven waves. Some voices recognized the Spire from captivity. Others remembered Earth streets from before a reset. A few had lived ordinary lives here and began naming stores, bus lines, and apartments that no longer existed.
ARCHIVE COUNCIL
Home-recognition responses: 3,118.
Verified current memories: 0.

Jace closed the recommendation. Nobody needed to search the dead before the living finished speaking.
At the center courtyard, Madison ended a ration meeting without looking up from her board. Jackson assigned two radio checks. Grace recorded three refusals beside the same benefits those people had received before refusing. Liam changed the night watch because clouds had hidden one rooftop angle.
Jace had returned to people who had formed food teams, watch rotations, and rules he did not create. The Archive voices stirred at the sight of home, and the Safe Zone kept working.
