Level 999: The Glitch King

Chapter 126: Released, Not Acquired

  • Next Chapter

Declining the index cut the transport ring's projected efficiency by thirty-four percent. It also returned every destination choice to the people making it. The first medical transport left with forty-two recovered prisoners, six Sunchain technicians, and no custody chain attached.

The vessel shook hard enough to drop ceiling panels across the empty loading lane. Theodore caught one with his damaged recovery line. The black-gold strand snapped after he pushed two people clear.

Recovery Core: 4% -> 1%.

Loyalty Lock: OFFLINE.

House tracking: LOST.

Theodore stared at the dead strand around his wrist. "I expected freedom to feel less like equipment failure."

Elijah took the weight from him. "You were trained by people who named obedience health."

The second transport route opened toward the unclaimed relay. Prisoners entered after Zoey translated the destination contract through Jace. The contract contained shelter access, twelve hours of medical power, and no guarantee after that. They chose it anyway because the choice belonged to them.

One family rejected both off-vessel destinations and asked to stay together even if their selection reduced their survival estimate. The System labeled the choice irrational. Joseph found space for all four in the medical route, then removed the recommendation panel before it could ask which family member carried the lowest treatment value.

Jace watched the transport accept them as separate passengers sharing one destination. The distinction preserved four names where the vessel had offered one efficient unit.

The Garden cut widened above the ring. Elias appeared at the dinner table in broken sections. One hand remained on the scarred wood. The other had already become blue symbols connected to the Root Key Fragment.

ELIAS ZERO FINAL RECORD

Source integrity: 18% -> 7%.

Garden integrity: 39% -> 16%.

Root Key Attunement: 11% -> 18%.

Carrier release requirement: 0/73.

Acquisition eligibility: PROHIBITED.

Release eligibility: AVAILABLE.

Jace reached through the cut. His hand passed through Elias's shoulder and found the heat of the old apartment stove.

"Can I keep you here?"

"Yes," Elias said. "The System will turn me into a function, and eventually you will forget I ever answered back."

Amelia stood beside Jace inside the Archive. Her daughter's red coat remained folded in her arms. "Release him."

Elias looked at her. "Thank you for verifying me."

"I verified what you did too."

"Keep that part."

Jace selected RELEASE.

The Garden's red roots loosened from the seventy-three carrier lines. The Root Key Fragment stayed connected to them as a debt, but Elias no longer served as the lock. His remaining memories passed through the kitchen without entering Jace's inventory. Burned soup. A late bus. Rent notices. A five-year-old boy on a fire escape who believed falling counted as travel.

Stolen from NovelPhoenix, this story should be reported if encountered on Amazon.

"What am I supposed to do with the key?" Jace asked.

Elias smiled with a tired face the official record had never managed to improve. "Break the world until it becomes human again."

The dinner table emptied. Elias disappeared without becoming silent inside Jace.

SOURCE DISPOSITION

Elias Zero.

Status: RELEASED.

Acquired: NO.

Indexed: NO.

Callable function: NONE.

Lived-memory anchors preserved: 5.

Theodore watched the final word remain on the panel. Sebastian had been deleted so completely that the House retained his commands and lost his name. Elias had left with his name intact and no owner attached. Theodore removed Sebastian's blank identification seal from his coat and scratched the name into its underside.

"One record," he said. "Mine."

The final transport could not carry everyone still aboard. Joseph rerouted the vessel's recovery pods through the Cleanup-Code Fragment. Each pod displayed a destination choice and a withdrawal option. Sunchain security officers helped people read the options after Theodore ordered nobody.

VESSEL EVACUATION

Recovered prisoners evacuated: 610/610.

Sunchain personnel evacuated: 83/83.

Deaths during Root Cleanup: 3.

Unindexed Archive identities preserved: 18,438.

House custody records transferred: 0.

Vessel integrity: 6%.

Earth route passengers: 15.

The Earth group included Jace, Seraphina, Theodore, Elijah, Joseph, and ten people who had asked to remain near the Archive until their memories settled. Amelia, Hannah, and Zoey traveled inside the Council by choice. The other survivors divided between the relay and the medical station, carrying copies of the same warning about Sunchain jurisdiction.

Before the last route closed, Theodore sent the survivors Sebastian's name, Caleb's name, and the vessel's unedited casualty record. The transmission possessed no House authentication. Eighty-three former personnel accepted copies anyway. Official systems could erase the source later, but they would have to erase it from every person who chose to remember.

The transport ring collapsed behind the last departure. White light consumed the vessel without finding a remaining target.

The Earth route opened through Basement Drive instead of the System transit network. Jace saw subway tile, flooded service steps, and layers of city history that refused to agree on where the tunnel ended. Aurora-colored residue moved along the rails, although he did not yet know the name attached to it.

Theodore paused before the opening. "House Sunchain will follow."

"They were coming anyway," Seraphina said.

Joseph adjusted a recovery pack against his shoulder. "The ten patients need stable shelter before another transport."

Jace followed Liam's Memory Anchor through the broken histories. The signal had strengthened while he was gone. Someone had rebuilt the north approach. Someone else had changed the watch rotation. The Safe Zone no longer felt like a place waiting for him to return.

They climbed from Basement Drive into cold evening air. The Spire rose beyond patched roofs and blue barrier light. New barricades crossed the avenue. Human lookouts watched from three levels while freed heirs guarded the ruined transit mouth.

Then Jace saw the banners.

Gold Sunchain circles burned above the eastern blocks. A red Rook blade marked the south. Silver Ardent records glyphs floated over the west approach. More signals waited beyond the clouds.

Every banner faced the Safe Zone.
