Level 999: The Glitch King
Chapter 125: Break It Until It's Human Again
The exit threw Jace onto the records-bay floor with the taste of burned pepper still in his mouth. Seraphina caught his shoulder after he nodded. Hannah, Amelia, and Zoey returned inside the Archive in separate waves, each carrying her own memories. The Garden route stayed open behind them as a thin blue cut through the air.
The recovery vessel had begun coming apart around that cut. White residue climbed the walls where Root Cleanup had removed its own supports. Doors opened onto the wrong decks. A treatment lift arrived carrying three frightened prisoners and no floor beneath it.
Theodore pulled one prisoner clear while Elijah jammed Caleb's broken seal into the lift controls. Joseph used the remaining medical network to keep the car suspended.
VESSEL ESCAPE EVENT
Vessel integrity: 38%.
Surviving recovered prisoners: 610.
Surviving Sunchain personnel: 83.
Unindexed Archive identities: 18,438.
Available transport routes: 3.
Estimated collapse: 00:11:20.
Stage 1: Exit Memory Garden. COMPLETE.
Stage 2: Open evacuation spine. ACTIVE.
Stage 3: Separate people from House custody. LOCKED.
Theodore saw the blue cut and the empty space where Elias remained. "Did you find him?"
"Enough of him," Jace said.
Theodore's eyes went to the Archive signals moving around Jace. "Enough is expensive here."
The Garden trembled. Elias held it open from the other side, and every second cost him source integrity. Jace could feel the Root Key Fragment trying to complete its transfer through seventy-three living carriers scattered beyond the vessel.
He opened the finished facility map. Root Cleanup had exposed twelve access keys, but the vessel had reassigned every surviving person to House property containment. The evacuation spine would move equipment. It would leave people behind.
Joseph read the restriction. "The medical transports are classified as equipment."
"Then the vessel finally made a useful mistake," Jace said.
Zoey surfaced beside the map inside the Archive. She found the dead command dialect beneath PATIENT EQUIPMENT and changed one relationship mark. The classification expanded.
EVACUATION SPINE
Approved cargo: Medical equipment.
Attached patients: PROHIBITED -> PERMITTED.
Ownership transfer: NONE.
Destination authority: NONE.
Route stability: 41%.
The recovered prisoners began moving in groups chosen by Joseph's triage list. Sunchain officers watched them enter transports that no longer recorded custody. Some officers raised weapons. Theodore stood between them and the first loading bay with four percent left in his recovery core.
"The House will classify this as theft," one officer said.
Theodore looked at the people waiting behind him. "Then write my name on the report while it still exists."
The officer lowered his weapon. Two others began carrying medical crates.
The tale has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.
The first group included a woman who had spent eleven years classified as nonresponsive. She stopped at the transport threshold and asked where the route ended. Joseph gave her the three known facts and the four things he could not guarantee. She listened, chose the medical station, and entered without a House prompt confirming that her decision was rational.
Theodore watched the door close behind her. His recovery training kept offering to evaluate her usefulness. He dismissed the prompt until it stopped returning.
The escape route failed at Junction Six. Cleanup residue sealed the corridor and offered one opening condition.
ROOT RESIDUE GATE
Accepted passage formats:
Indexed Archive.
Registered House personnel.
Owned recovery assets.
Unindexed identities increase processing load by 18,438 units.
Recommended action: INDEX ARCHIVE VOICES.
Projected route stability after indexing: 96%.
Projected independent voices after indexing: 0.
The Archive heard the offer. Fear crossed the Council faster than any command. Some voices asked Jace to accept because bodies were waiting in the corridor. Others remembered the silence that had followed Sunchain indexing. Amelia called for a voluntary count. Zoey separated immediate witnesses from people reacting to older rooms.
ARCHIVE COUNCIL ESCAPE VOTE
Active participants: 1,204.
Accept indexing: 318.
Reject indexing: 711.
Abstain or withdraw: 175.
Host authority: NONE.
Consensus threshold: NOT REQUIRED.
Jace closed the recommendation. The gate remained sealed.
Elijah unwrapped the Cleanup-Code Fragment from Caleb's broken seal. "This opened one cleanup route before."
"It also makes the carrier visible," Theodore said.
Elijah pressed the fragment into the gate. White code raced up his arm. Jace used Older Law Perception and saw the gate's buried purpose. It had been built to isolate dangerous cargo from living crew. Sunchain had reversed the relationship after deciding people were cargo.
Jace marked the reversal. Elijah broke it with Caleb's seal. The corridor opened wide enough for two stretchers at a time.
Access-Control Proficiency: 8% -> 13%.
Cleanup-Code Fragment integrity: 100% -> 37%.
Escape route stability: 41% -> 68%.
The Archive remained loud. It also remained alive.
They reached the transport ring with seven minutes left. Three routes waited there. One led to an abandoned relay beyond Sunchain jurisdiction. One led to a medical station Joseph trusted and Theodore did not. The third followed Jace's Memory Anchor toward Earth, where Liam's refusal still held like a hand-painted sign.
People chose their routes in visible queues. No destination accepted anyone automatically. Several prisoners waited for explanations twice. Joseph repeated them. Sunchain personnel chose separately, and thirty-one refused every route until Theodore showed them the vessel's collapse timer.
The delays pushed the escape estimate below six minutes. An officer tried to combine the queues by rank. Elijah moved the rope back and made him wait behind a prisoner whose legs could not support her. The officer began to object, saw Theodore watching, and carried the woman's stretcher instead.
Jace's status opened while the transports charged.

The System placed the indexing offer beneath the Status as though repetition could turn it into consent. Route stability fell to sixty-two percent when another hundred voices joined the Council.
Seraphina watched the loading queues. "If the route fails, people die."
"I know."
"If you index them, they disappear differently."
Jace looked at Amelia, Hannah, and Zoey. Each had survived because a detail refused to become useful data. He opened the escape gate with the slower route.
"We leave loud," he said.
The System asked one last time whether he wanted silence. Jace selected DECLINE.
