Chapter 123: Elias Zero

Jace stayed on his feet. The chair remained empty between them.

The man accepted the refusal without changing the room. That restraint convinced Jace more than the face did. Every false memory in the Garden had rushed to become whatever he needed. This man let the silence become uncomfortable.

The empty chair scraped once across the linoleum as the damaged domain struggled to keep its invitation in place.

"You called me Jaybird," Jace said.

"You climbed onto the fire escape when you were five and announced that falling was a transportation method."

Jace remembered rust under his palms and a hand closing around the back of his shirt. The memory contained no face. The grip did not hurt. Somebody had been terrified enough to sound angry.

"What is your name?"

"My name is Elias Zero."

The Garden reacted before Jace did. Red roots punched through the kitchen floor. Plates shattered. White correction light crawled across the windows, searching for the source that had spoken an unindexed name.

GARDEN INTRUSION

Root audit contact: Detected.

Source concealment: 41%.

Domain integrity: 62%.

Time to correction: 00:03:00.

The correction light formed human outlines in the hall. Hannah overturned the table against the doorway. Zoey traced the old command hidden in the wallpaper. Amelia crossed to Elias and looked through his chest as though reading a damaged page held against a lamp.

"Keep talking," she said. "I will verify what survives."

Elias pressed two fingers to the table. The hot-pot ring brightened, and the kitchen expanded into a maze of ordinary evenings. The first scene showed Jace doing homework beside a stack of unpaid bills. In another, a younger Elias mended a coat badly. Soup burned while someone laughed from another room. The memories slowed the correction figures because none carried enough authority to deserve priority.

ELIAS ZERO

Record class: Damaged living source.

Relationship match: Paternal.

Confidence: 67%.

Official registry match: None.

Lived-memory match: 84%.

Source integrity: 36%.

Remaining coherent time: 00:08:14.

Amelia touched one scene. Her fingers passed through a grocery receipt, then stopped on a handwritten note beneath it.

"The paper is reconstructed," she said. "The handwriting came from the same source that sent the Ghost Signal."

Hannah studied Elias. "A father can still lie."

"Yes," Elias said. "I did."

Jace's anger arrived cleanly enough to belong to him. "You could have started with that before building a garden inside prisoners."

Pain crossed Elias's face. "Sunchain built the carrier network from a method I designed. I hid one source inside it after they turned concealment into storage."

"You used them anyway."

"I did."

No excuse followed. Amelia's attention moved from Elias to Zoey's scar. Her daughter had been reduced to missing details by people who believed preservation excused theft. She refused to let a father's regret make the same argument sound noble.

"You will not call this protection," Amelia said.

Elias lowered his eyes. "I will not."

The correction figures reached the doorway. Hannah rolled the red toy car beneath the barricade. Leo's anchor unfolded around it, turning the hall into Apartment 4B for one second. The figures entered the wrong memory and walked into a kitchen that no longer connected to Jace.

"We have two minutes," Zoey said.

Elias opened his hand. A shape rested above his palm, small enough to resemble a key cut from black glass. Its teeth kept changing. Beneath the System's gold interface, older blue symbols moved in a direction Jace's eyes understood only when he stopped trying to read them.

[INHERITANCE QUEST]

THE ROOT BENEATH THE RULE

Source: Elias Zero.

Offer: Root Key Fragment.

Ownership transfer: Prohibited.

Attunement required: Voluntary recognition.

Current synchronization: 0%.

Functions available: 0/5.

Jace did not reach for it. "What does it cost them?"

"The carrier network loses my concealment once transfer begins," Elias said. "The Garden will become visible in pieces. Every surviving carrier must be released before the last piece moves."

Zoey gave a humorless laugh. "Your inheritance comes with seventy-three hostages."

"It comes with a debt to seventy-three people," Elias answered.

Jace looked at Zoey. "Do you want the route closed?"

She studied the changing key. "I want what they put inside me removed without removing me."

Jace selected ACCEPT.

ROOT KEY TRANSFER

Synchronization: 0% -> 4%.

Functions available: 0/5.

Carrier release requirement: 0/73.

Transfer state: Paused by mutual condition.

Root-Layer Detection: 27% -> 33%.

Level Break requirement discovered:

Identify the quarantine law.

Current Level Break Progress: 12%.

The fragment entered no inventory. It remained above the table, connected to Jace by a thin blue line and to seventy-three carriers by threads that disappeared through the Garden walls.

White light broke through Apartment 4B. One correction figure seized Hannah's shoulder. Her outline began losing color. Amelia drove the folded red coat into the figure's chest, using the false garment as a false source. The Garden accepted its own fabrication for half a second. Zoey pulled Hannah free.

Jace marked the route, and the figure fractured along the contradiction between official memory and lived touch. The action restored no skill. It used what he had already learned.

Elias's source integrity fell.

Source integrity: 36% -> 29%.

Domain integrity: 62% -> 47%.

Time to correction: 00:00:51.

"You chose an ordinary life," Jace said. "Why?"

Elias looked around the scarred kitchen. "Power creates records. Titles create records. Fear creates records faster than either. I needed you to grow inside things the Algorithm treated as background noise."

"You mean rent and burned soup."

"Your bad report cards, my worse cooking, the bus arriving late, and every person who loved you without filing a claim." Elias leaned forward. "Your life was camouflage, but it was never fake. I chose it because ordinary love was harder for the Algorithm to classify."

The correction light reached the table. Seraphina's voice came through the Voluntary Anchor and asked Jace where he was. He answered with the broken stove knob, the scar beneath his thumbnail, and Manhattan rain against leaking shoes. The exit route opened behind him.

Elias held the Garden together with both hands. "I hid you on Earth," he said, "because Basement Drive contained enough broken history to confuse the Algorithm."
