Level 999: The Glitch King

Chapter 120: Root Cleanup

  • Next Chapter

Theodore's hand remained on the barrier while the next deletion cycle chose thirty-two targets. Jace could see the white lines converging through the vessel. He could also feel eighteen thousand four hundred thirty-eight voices watching the people outside decide whether prisoners and jailers deserved the same rescue.

"The nodes become physical when they commit," Jace said. "We have four-tenths of a second."

Joseph opened the treatment network from a manual console. "The medical system can predict which bodies it is about to lose."

Elijah tested the broken seal in his hand. "Then mark them."

The plan required no hidden contract. Joseph would expose the targets. Jace would call the commitment. Theodore and Elijah would break the physical lines. Seraphina would keep Jace separate from the Archive long enough for him to see the pattern.

Theodore assigned himself the Stable Heir ward because his recovery core could still reach its black-gold support lines. Elijah chose the security spine, where every officer had orders to detain him. Joseph remained at the manual medical console. None of them waited for Jace to approve their positions.

The temporary party displayed four separate objectives and no leader icon. Jace could see their Health and distance from the cleanup nodes. He could not issue movement commands.

"This interface is terrible," he said.

Seraphina watched Theodore limp toward the ward. "You mean honest."

"Usually the same thing."

The next pulse began.

MEDICAL LOSS PROJECTION

Targets: 32.

Prisoners: 24.

Sunchain Personnel: 8.

Time to Commitment: 00:00:03.

White outlines unfolded across the ward. Jace watched for the instant their feet gained shadows.

"Now."

Theodore struck Node Two with his recovery line. Elijah broke the conduit beneath Node Three. Joseph dumped emergency Charge into the targets, forcing the vessel to recognize every body as medically active during deletion.

ROOT CLEANUP

Integrity: 92% -> 61%.

Node Two: DISABLED.

Node Three: DISABLED.

Targets Preserved: 32/32.

[ROOT-LAYER DETECTION UNLOCKED]

Root-Layer Detection Lv. 1.

Proficiency: 0% -> 12%.

The remaining nodes abandoned the ward. White light gathered around Jace's cage and the vessel core. The process had learned that the Archive was providing timing data. It began deleting the carrier first.

ROOT PRIORITY CHANGE

Primary Target: JACE.

Attached Identities: 18,438.

Deletion Commitment: 00:00:05.

Seraphina offered the Voluntary Anchor. Jace accepted. Her voice reached him through the rising Archive panic.

"What is yours?"

"The scar under my thumbnail."

"Where are you?"

"On a Sunchain vessel."

"What are you choosing?"

Theodore, Elijah, and Joseph waited outside a cage their own system had built.

"Everybody."

FREE ACCORD STABILIZATION

Integrity: 74% -> 77%.

Identity Separation: 67% -> 71%.

Root-Layer Detection: 12% -> 19%.

The deletion line became visible one layer below the gold vessel controls. It ran through Node One, crossed the cage, and returned to Node Four at the core. Jace could not reach either node with his body. The Archive could reach the route because Sunchain had used living carriers to hide records inside it.

Zoey understood first.

"We can carry the interruption."

"It could delete whoever touches it."

"Then ask."

Jace opened the Council. Four hundred twelve identities volunteered. He limited the connection to seven because Archive Recall could not safely hold more. Each volunteer saw the risk. Each remained.

ARCHIVE ROUTE INTERVENTION

Voluntary Participants: 7.

Host Authority: NONE.

Projected Identity Loss: 1 to 7.

If you stumble upon this tale on Amazon, it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.

Accept?

Jace selected NO.

Zoey stared at him. "We chose."

"The estimate says somebody disappears."

"The estimate assumes we cross separately."

Amelia moved beside her. The seven witnesses joined hands inside the Archive, sharing the route without merging identities. The projected loss changed.

Projected Identity Loss: 1 to 7 -> 0 to 2.

Still too high. Jace felt the countdown reach two seconds. Theodore pressed his damaged recovery line against the outside of the cage.

"Use mine as the return path."

"It may burn out your core."

"It belonged to Sunchain before it belonged to me. I would like one useful choice from it."

Jace accepted the route.

The Archive witnesses carried the interruption through the hidden living-storage channel. Theodore's core drew it back into physical space. Elijah drove Caleb's seal through Node One. Joseph cut the core's medical protection, exposing Node Four for one heartbeat.

Jace placed the Error Mark through Theodore's line.

ERROR MARK RESPONSE: 7%.

Target: ROOT CLEANUP RETURN PATH.

Integrity: 100% -> 0%.

The vessel convulsed. White light broke into gray fragments and fell without touching the floor.

The last pulse had already committed to nine targets. Elijah reached three officers. Theodore caught four prisoners through the failing recovery line. Joseph kept two patients alive by holding their hearts in rhythm with emergency Charge after every automatic treatment function shut down.

None of the nine disappeared. The System counted their survival before it counted damage to the process.

QUEST RESCUE CREDIT

Final-Cycle Targets Preserved: 9/9.

Damage Credit: SECONDARY.

Rescue Credit: PRIMARY.

ROOT CLEANUP DEFEATED

Total Initial Targets: 19,138.

Confirmed Losses: 7.

Targets Preserved: 19,131.

Prisoners Preserved: 610.

Sunchain Personnel Preserved: 83.

Archive Identities Preserved: 18,438.

Rescue Overflow Experience: +44,000.

Overflow Experience: 807,200 -> 851,200.

REWARDS

Root-Layer Detection Proficiency: 19% -> 27%.

Cleanup-Code Fragment x1.

Sunchain Facility Access Keys: 12/12.

Surviving Collector Reputation:

ACTIVE RECOVERY THREAT -> CONTESTED COOPERATION.

Temporary Alliance Status: COMPLETE.

No ownership claim had formed. The party dissolved without penalty.

The security officers kept their weapons after the party interface vanished. One watched Elijah, whose correction order remained active, and then checked the broken cleanup node he had destroyed. The officer dismissed the arrest prompt. Two others did the same. Their faction status did not change. Their next choice did.

Across the Stable Heir ward, recovered people began asking why the treatment lights had gone out. Some asked in flat voices. One woman kept repeating the question after Joseph answered, as though preference were returning faster than memory. Joseph did not silence her. He sat beside the bed and answered again.

Joseph sat beside the two recovered prisoners the process had killed. Elijah placed Caleb's broken seal beside Sebastian's body. Theodore remained standing until the black-gold light inside his chest went dark.

Recovery Core: 31% -> 4%.

Loyalty Lock: OFFLINE.

Original Identity Response: STABLE.

Elijah said, "Aren."

Theodore met his eyes. "I remember."

Then he crossed to the cage. House controls no longer recognized him, so he used the Cleanup-Code Fragment and the physical release beneath the floor. The white barrier descended.

Beyond the records bay, deeper cells appeared on the completed facility map. Some held prisoners. Others held Collectors whose original names had survived only as damaged fragments.

Theodore opened Jace's cage.

"Save the jailers."
