Level 999: The Glitch King
Chapter 121: Memory Garden
The cage had opened, but the vessel still did not know how to release anyone.
Manual locks covered the recovery spine. White residue moved inside their seams like frost trapped beneath glass. Root Cleanup had lost its four nodes, yet the doors retained the last order they had received. Joseph began opening them one at a time from the medical console while Theodore and Elijah crossed the ward with twelve stolen access keys and Caleb's broken seal.
Theodore stopped at the first occupied cell. A Collector waited inside with both hands behind his back because the correction routine had erased every other posture from him.
"What is your name?" Theodore asked.
The man's mouth opened. No answer came.
"Do you want the door open?"
The man looked at the corridor, then nodded.
Theodore used the physical release. He did not choose a name for him.
Jace watched from the records bay as similar decisions spread through the vessel without waiting for his direction. Eighty-three surviving Sunchain personnel argued over weapons, patients, and whether Elijah was still under arrest. Six hundred ten recovered prisoners needed food, treatment, clothing, and somewhere to stand after years of being stored as future labor. Root Cleanup had ended. Its consequences had barely begun.
The Garden coordinates burned behind Jace's vision.

Zoey touched the scar below her collarbone. "I carried the entrance."
Amelia appeared beside her inside the Archive. Hannah followed, holding the red toy car against her chest. Zoey carried the hidden route, while Amelia and Hannah possessed the strongest lived-memory anchors in the Council. Together, they could guide Jace through an entrance the System had failed to catalogue.
Seraphina stood beside Jace in the records bay. "Archive Recall is exhausted."
"This is an instance route."
"That answer avoided the risk."
Jace opened the entry conditions.

Seraphina read the timer twice. "If it reaches zero, I pull you out."
"If I stop answering, pull sooner."
"What will you answer?"
Jace looked at the thin scar beneath his right thumbnail. "I broke a bottle when I was thirteen because I tried to open it against a brick."
Seraphina offered the Voluntary Anchor. He accepted.
FREE ACCORD Lv. 2

Voluntary Anchor: Active.

Zoey opened the route.
The records bay disappeared beneath summer rain.
Jace stood on a Manhattan sidewalk that belonged to three decades at once. A yellow cab rolled through the transparent shape of a horse carriage. A delivery drone hung above a pay phone. Storefront signs changed whenever he tried to read them. Across the street, red trees grew from black squares of soil, and their roots passed through concrete without cracking it.
Amelia studied an apartment building whose bricks kept rearranging themselves. "The official layer is repairing contradictions."
The building became cleaner as she spoke. Graffiti vanished. Window units aligned. A rusted fire escape turned black and straight. Jace's stomach tightened because the corrected version looked convincing.
The narrative has been taken without permission. Report any sightings.
Zoey pointed toward the curb. "What do you remember?"
Jace remembered waiting there after school. The official memory supplied a polished car and a father who arrived on time. The lived layer offered a city bus that splashed dirty water across his sneakers while he counted quarters twice.
"I remember the bus," he said.
The polished car opened its rear door. A man leaned across the seat, his face hidden by sunlight, and called Jace by name. The voice carried every tone Jace had wanted from a father he could barely place.
He walked toward the bus stop.

The car folded into white paper and blew down the street.
They entered the apartment building through a front door that stuck halfway. Jace knew to lift the handle before he remembered learning it. That detail held while the walls tried six paint colors. Amelia ran her fingers above a row of mailboxes without touching them.
One box displayed her daughter's name.
The hallway changed. A girl in a red coat climbed the stairs, turned, and smiled at Amelia. Her face was complete. The Archive had never given Amelia more than the coat, rain, and a laugh. The Garden offered brown eyes, a dimple, and two missing teeth.
Amelia took one step after her.
Jace did not grab her. "Do you remember her eyes?"
Amelia's breathing became uneven. "I remember wanting to."
The girl held out her hand.
"Do you remember the dimple?" Zoey asked.
"I do not."
Amelia remained where she was. Tears moved down her face without breaking into static. "My daughter deserves better than a face chosen because I needed one."
The girl and the stairwell peeled apart. Behind them stood a narrow landing with water damage shaped like a bent bird.

The Garden punished the rejection by mixing its source layers. Hannah's Apartment 4B opened where Jace's childhood kitchen should have been. Leo's red car rolled beneath a table. A Sunchain technician crossed the room carrying a gold needle. Beyond the window, people fled a formatting wave that had struck Earth long before Jace was born.

Hannah picked up the toy car before the technician stepped on it. Zoey followed the command symbols on the needle. Amelia marked the water stain. Each truthful detail held a small piece of the room still while the rest tried to become orderly.
Jace found the apartment's kitchen by listening for a radiator that knocked twice, paused, and knocked once more. The rhythm had kept him awake through winters when the landlord promised repairs and his family learned to sleep through the lie.
The correct doorway appeared between two red trees.
Beyond it, roots crossed a floor made from old photographs. Every image showed a different Earth, and every version had been filed as the only one. At the far end waited a kitchen table with four chairs. One chair faced away from him.
The man sitting there lifted one hand.
"You took the long route, Jaybird."
