Level 999: The Glitch King
Chapter 119: Save the Jailers
The first shelf vanished without falling. A child's shoe, six identification seals, and every name attached to them became clean white space. Amelia screamed from inside the Archive as four voices disappeared from the Council.
Stored Identities: 18,442 -> 18,438.
Jace hit the barrier with his palm. The contact burned color from his skin.
Health: 46/420 -> 43/420.
Seraphina pulled his hand back after he nodded permission. The Free Accord held, but the cleanup process had no relationship line for her to challenge. It treated consent as data attached to the target.
Outside the cage, Theodore knelt beside Sebastian. No House prompt recognized the body. His title, permissions, and family record had been removed before his heart stopped. Joseph checked for a pulse anyway.
"He is dead," Joseph said.
"The House will restore his record," Theodore answered.
No one replied. The blank place where Sebastian's name should have been held Theodore's attention. His face changed before he spoke again.
"There is no record to restore."
He opened the Collector registry anyway. Sebastian's family line ended at an empty space between two living relatives. The extraction orders he had signed remained, but the signature field now read AUTHORITY SOURCE UNAVAILABLE. The vessel remembered every command and had removed the person who made them.
Theodore searched three backup layers. Each returned the same absence.
"Recovery cannot rebuild what the System refuses to admit existed," Amelia said from inside Jace.
Theodore closed the registry. For years, his House had treated memory loss as an acceptable price because official records would preserve the useful truth. Sebastian's body beside him had a face, blood, and no approved history. Theodore placed two fingers over the dead man's eyes.
"Then we remember him without permission," he said.
The second deletion pulse crossed the Stable Heir ward. Two patient signals went dark. Joseph flinched as if the light had passed through him.
RECOVERED PRISONERS
612 -> 610.
ROOT CLEANUP INTEGRITY: 100%.
Damage Received: 0%.
Correction Progress: 3%.
Elijah struck the blank outline with Caleb's seal. The seal split. The outline did not move.
"It is not standing there," Jace said. "That is where the vessel is drawing it."
Theodore turned toward the cage. "Can you see the source?"
"Four nodes. My useful skills are still sealed."
"Then use the Archive."
Theodore said it before Joseph could. A Collector who had once treated stored lives as recovery material now asked those same people for help. The change did not repair anything. It gave them a choice they had not possessed before.
Jace opened Archive Recall.
ARCHIVE RECALL Lv. 1
Free Query Slots: 1/1.
Available Direct Sources: 7.
Query Cost: FREE.
He asked for witnesses who had seen root correction move through a Sunchain vessel. Zoey narrowed the query to direct observation. Amelia asked for volunteers. Seven identities answered.
Free Query Slots: 1 -> 0.
The memories arrived in sequence. A vessel three centuries old. A failed rebellion. White figures appearing one breath after a target panel resolved. Each figure remained intangible until the process committed to deletion. Then it required a physical line long enough to remove the target from the vessel.

Unlock Requirement:
Interrupt one committed correction.
The third pulse selected twelve security officers and nine prisoners. White outlines formed across the ward.
Jace gave Theodore the timing. Theodore did not ask how certain he was. He sent Elijah toward the nearest prisoner and ran toward an officer who had aimed a weapon at Jace less than an hour earlier.
The outlines became solid.
"Now."
Elijah drove the broken identification seal through one. Theodore tore a black-gold recovery line from his own chest and wrapped it around the other. Both outlines cracked.
ROOT CLEANUP
Integrity: 100% -> 92%.
Interrupted Corrections: 2.
Prisoners Saved: 1.
Sunchain Personnel Saved: 1.
A strip of white code remained wrapped around the broken identification seal. It had no weight until Elijah tried to let go. Then it tightened around his fingers and pointed toward the sealed vessel core.
SALVAGE PREVIEW
Cleanup-Code Filament.
Classification: ROOT RESIDUE.
Current Owner: NONE.
Possible Uses:
Trace active correction node.
Open one cleanup-sealed route.
Risk:
Carrier becomes visible to Root Cleanup.
Elijah offered it to Theodore. Theodore shook his head and wrapped the filament around Caleb's broken seal instead.
"He spent his last minute holding a system together," Theodore said. "Let the seal help us break one."
The salvage remained outside Jace's inventory. It belonged to the temporary alliance if one formed, which meant nobody could quietly claim it before everyone agreed what they were doing.
The process adapted. Every door to the vessel core sealed. The medical network stopped recognizing Joseph. The House route rejected Theodore. The Garden coordinates flashed inside Jace's vision, offering escape into the memory domain while bodies remained outside.
Seraphina read the choice.
"If you enter now, can you return?"
"Probably."
"That was not my question."
Jace closed the route.
A quest opened across the cage.
[TEMPORARY ALLIANCE QUEST]
SAVE THE JAILERS
Objective:
Disable four Root Cleanup nodes.
Available Protection Scope:
Recovered Prisoners Only.
Registered Sunchain Personnel Only.
All Flagged Persons.
Recommended:
Preserve registered personnel to maintain vessel function.
Jace selected ALL FLAGGED PERSONS.
Quest Difficulty: EXTREME.
Failure:
19,131 surviving targets deleted.
Reward Basis:
Lives preserved, regardless of faction.
The quest did not activate. Four empty participant lines waited beneath Jace's choice.
TEMPORARY ALLIANCE
Participants must join voluntarily.
Shared Command: NONE.
Withdrawal: AVAILABLE.
Friendly Fire Protection: DISABLED.
Theodore selected JOIN. Elijah followed. Joseph hesitated while another medical alert turned white, then added his name. Seraphina joined last and refused the role the System recommended for her.
Recommended Role:
Sunchain Noble Liaison.
Selected Role:
VOLUNTARY ANCHOR.
The quest activated without choosing a leader.
Theodore read the scope. "You included the officers."
"They were on the list."
"They put you in that cage."
"Still on the list."
Another pulse formed. Theodore paused beside Sebastian's body before lifting the damaged recovery line again. Elijah moved beside him. Joseph rerouted medical Charge into the ward without waiting for House permission.
The same people who had called recovery mercy stood between their prisoners and the system that owned them all.
Theodore placed one hand against Jace's cage.
"Tell us how to stop it."
