Level 999: The Glitch King
Chapter 118: Cleanup Protocol
White light removed every shadow from the records bay. It flattened Amelia's face, erased the depth between the shelves, and turned Seraphina's gold escort seal colorless. The vessel did not sound an alarm. A calm voice spoke from the walls.
"Unregistered contradiction detected. Correction has begun."
Sebastian opened his House controls. Nothing answered.
Jace scanned the light through the seven percent of his suppressed functions that still responded.
[ROOT CLEANUP PROCESS]
Classification:
ALGORITHM CORRECTION.
Authority Layer: ROOT.
Manifestation:
DISTRIBUTED VESSEL PROCESS.
Integrity Nodes: 4.
House Override Resistance: 100%.
Negotiation: UNAVAILABLE.
Current Correction Scope:
Sunchain Personnel: 84.
Recovered Prisoners: 612.
Unindexed Archive Identities: 18,442.
Total Targets: 19,138.
Joseph read the count twice. "It included everyone."
The medical dashboards opened without being asked. Six hundred twelve recovered prisoners appeared as rows of stable green lights. The lights did not contain names. They showed assigned work, remaining Charge yield, and the cost of keeping each body alive. Eighty-four Sunchain personnel appeared on a separate screen with family records and evacuation priority.
Root Cleanup dragged both lists into one column.
CORRECTION TARGETS
Economic Use: IRRELEVANT.
House Standing: IRRELEVANT.
Recovery Status: IRRELEVANT.
The separation that had justified every locked door disappeared as soon as the Algorithm wanted a cleaner vessel. Joseph reached toward the patient list. His authorization dissolved before his fingers touched it.
The records-bay doors sealed. A white barrier rose around Jace, forming a containment cell from floor to ceiling. Seraphina stepped toward it and stopped when her hand began losing color.
ROOT QUARANTINE
Primary Carrier: JACE.
Archive Release: PROHIBITED.
Contact Risk: DELETION.
Theodore Voss arrived through a gold personnel route that the cleanup process had opened for him. Elijah supported him beneath one arm. Theodore's black-gold recovery core had been repaired enough to keep him standing, although every step looked borrowed.
This tale has been pilfered from NovelPhoenix. If found on Amazon, kindly file a report.
The last time Jace had seen them, Elijah had carried Theodore through a House withdrawal route while Caleb's body cooled behind them. Sunchain had taken them back. Theodore now wore a fresh Collector coat over the same damaged body. A line of correction scars circled his throat where the House had tried to repair the loyalty lock. Elijah had no uniform. The lack of one looked deliberate.
Theodore saw Hannah's red toy car, Amelia's unfinished outline, and the thousands of Archive signals moving through Jace. Recognition crossed his face before his recovery training covered it.
Jace checked the route behind them.
"You came back."
"The vessel recalled every flagged Collector," Theodore said.
Elijah glanced at the white walls. "It did not say why."
The route closed. Their correction orders appeared above them.
THEODORE VOSS
Status: RECOVERED COLLECTOR.
Deviation Record: ACTIVE.
Disposition: DELETE.
ELIJAH ARDEN
Status: DESERTER.
Disposition: DELETE.
Theodore studied the word as though it belonged to a language he had once trusted.
"House correction orders require preservation review," he said.
The vessel answered through the wall.
"House review is subordinate."
Sebastian moved between the cleanup light and the nearest repository shelf. His compliance seal remained at fifty-five percent. He still wore it.
"I am Sebastian Sunchain, extraction authority for this vessel. Suspend correction pending noble review."
HOUSE SUNCHAIN OVERRIDE
Title Authority: VALID.
Vessel Authority: VALID.
Root Authority: INSUFFICIENT.
Request: DENIED.
Theodore faced Sebastian. "Who taught us that House authority was the highest law aboard its own vessel?"
"The House."
"The Algorithm allowed the lesson."
Sebastian's jaw tightened. Neither man sounded surprised anymore. Theodore had spent longer than Jace knew serving a structure that had replaced his name, installed obedience, and called the result recovery. Sebastian had defended the same structure because he believed bodies preserved under it could someday become people again. The cleanup process had reduced both beliefs to permissions it could revoke.
The first integrity node appeared above the central Charge column. It had no body. A blank human outline unfolded from the wall and walked through a sealed door. Security officers raised their command seals. The outline passed through every restraint.
One officer fired a gold binding line. The line crossed the outline and wrapped around a recovered woman behind it. She fell from her workstation with the officer's restraint cutting into her arms.
Theodore tore the restraint away. The officer lifted his seal toward him.
"You interfered with authorized defense."
"You struck the person behind your target."
"The process has no body."
The woman struggled to sit. Theodore said, "Then stop shooting through people."
The officer lowered the seal. The blank outline continued toward the records bay without acknowledging any of them.
ROOT CLEANUP TELEMETRY
Node 1 Location: Records Bay.
Node 2 Location: Stable Heir Ward.
Node 3 Location: Security Spine.
Node 4 Location: Vessel Core.
Deletion Cycle: 00:00:30.
Protected Categories: NONE.
Joseph ran to the medical controls. "I can move the recovered patients into emergency care."
"The care system is part of the vessel," Jace said.
"Then I will make it choose them before it chooses itself."
He opened every treatment channel he possessed. Elijah drew Caleb's old identification seal instead of a weapon. Theodore watched the countdown reach eighteen seconds.
A House withdrawal route opened beside him.
AUTHORIZED WITHDRAWAL
Eligible:
Theodore Voss.
Capacity: 1.
Correction Delay: 00:01:00.
He could leave. The process had offered one useful servant a minute of survival while it erased the rest. Elijah saw the route and released Theodore's arm.
"Aren," Elijah said.
Theodore closed the route.
"I remember."
The countdown reached eight seconds. Sebastian placed his palm against the House control and forced his personal protection over the records bay.
SUNCHAIN BLOODLINE PROTECTION
Protected Persons: 0 -> 19,138.
Authority Conflict: ROOT.
Sebastian's hand began turning white.
Theodore crossed the room faster than his damaged core should have allowed. "Release it."
"If I release it, correction begins."
"It has already begun."
Sebastian's attention moved across Amelia, Hannah's red toy car, and the shelves of belongings that his House had preserved after removing the people attached to them. He kept his hand on the control.
Root authority passed through his title. The protection count returned to zero.
Sebastian Sunchain disappeared from every House panel a moment before his body struck the floor.
DELETION CYCLE ACTIVE
Targets do not distinguish:
OWNER.
ASSET.
PRISONER.
RECORD.
White light entered the shelves, the ward, and every gold line in the vessel at once.
