Level 999: The Glitch King
Chapter 117: The Garden Coordinates
The door stayed open in two hundred six different memories. Some versions led to a medical ward. Others ended at an incinerator, a nursery, or open space where a vessel had once broken apart. Jace could feel every witness insisting that fear made their route the correct one.
Zoey stood inside the Archive with both hands raised. She did not tell anyone to be quiet. She asked them to mark whether they had walked the corridor themselves.
ARCHIVE COUNCIL
Voluntary Participants: 206.
Direct Witnesses: 17.
Secondhand Sources: 63.
Panic Responses: 126.
Signal Clarity: 6%.
Host Corruption: 86%.
"Secondhand sources can withdraw," Zoey said. "We will ask again if we need you."
Voices receded in uneven waves. Nobody vanished. Their memories remained their own, and the distinction lowered the pressure behind Jace's eyes. Amelia moved among the direct witnesses, asking each one what they had touched. She used physical details because Sunchain had copied commands more easily than bodies.
One witness refused to withdraw even after admitting he had never seen Service Junction Nine. He remembered his sister disappearing near a different corridor and believed leaving the query would abandon her again. His fear kept dragging thirty-one unrelated doors into the search.
Amelia did not remove him. She showed him a separate waiting space inside the Council where his sister's memory would remain visible while this query continued. He entered it by choice. The false corridors dropped from thirty-one to nine.
Jace watched the Council reorganize around a promise that did not require obedience. It was slower than command. The System displayed the delay as a defect.
CONSENSUS LATENCY
Projected Command Resolution: 0.2 seconds.
Voluntary Sorting Time: 18.4 seconds.
Efficiency Loss: 98.9%.
Identity Retention: IMPROVED.
"We can afford eighteen seconds," Jace said.
Zoey watched the frightened witnesses still choosing where to stand. "They could not."
One remembered cold metal under his palm. Another remembered a seam in the floor catching the heel of her shoe. A third remembered blood drying beneath a security cuff.
Jace knew none of those details belonged to him. The knowledge held.
IDENTITY SEPARATION
Current: 67%.
Foreign Details Correctly Rejected: 3.
Controlled Query Eligibility: PARTIAL.
Zoey faced the damaged signal. It flickered behind the witnesses like a voice speaking through a wall.
"The question has to be narrow," she said. "If you ask where the Garden is, everyone who remembers any garden will answer."

Jace already felt grass, cemetery soil, and flowers under three different suns.
"Very helpful system."
Amelia watched the memories gather. "Ask for the command around the signal. Commands have fewer emotions attached."
Jace built the query with Zoey instead of issuing it alone.
CONTROLLED ARCHIVE QUERY
Target:
The source that carried KEEP BELOW AUDIT through Service Junction Nine.
Eligible Sources:
Direct witnesses with memory confidence above 60%.
Participation: VOLUNTARY.
Withdrawal: AVAILABLE.
Estimated Cost:
Corruption +3%.
Identity-Bleed Risk: 43%.
Accept?
Seraphina saw the panel from the records-bay floor.
"You are at eighty-six."
"I noticed."
"Then let me anchor you before you accept."
She offered the Free Accord connection. Jace accepted. Gold light settled around his wrist without tightening.
FREE ACCORD Lv. 2
Integrity: 74%.
Voluntary Anchor: ACTIVE.
Command Authority: NONE.
Jace accepted the query.
Corruption Load: 86% -> 89%.
The corridor entered him from seven bodies at once. His left shoulder struck a white wall. A restraint cut another person's ankle. Someone smelled disinfectant and burned hair. The memories overlapped until Jace could not remember whether he had ever worn a gold security ring.
His hand carried no gold ring.
"The ring belongs to source four," Zoey said.
Jace released it. A man's hand disappeared from his own.
Identity-Bleed Risk: 43% -> 51%.
Primary Identity Confidence: 76% -> 72%.
The fourth witness carried the sharpest route and the worst attachment. He had followed a technician through the junction while guards dragged his daughter in the opposite direction. The memory kept turning Jace's head toward her. Every time he looked, the corridor reset before the hidden command appeared.
Jace felt the father's choice trying to become his own. Follow the route or follow the child. The query wanted the route. The person inside the memory wanted his daughter.
"Let him leave," Jace said.
Zoey's eyes narrowed. "He has the clearest source."
"He did not volunteer to watch that again."
The witness withdrew. Signal confidence fell by nine percent. A weaker route replaced his, but the crushing grief left Jace's ribs and returned to the person who owned it.
Query Accuracy: 78% -> 69%.
Identity-Bleed Risk: 51% -> 38%.
The System offered to restore the source. Jace declined.
Seraphina asked, "What is under your right thumbnail?"
Jace found the thin scar he had carried since Earth.
"A bad decision with a broken bottle."
"Whose decision?"
"Mine."
Primary Identity Confidence: 72% -> 78%.
The query tightened. Secondhand routes fell away. The remaining witnesses shared one image: Service Junction Nine, a gold line interrupted by a square of gray metal, and a command that moved beneath the visible door authorization.
PASS FAMILY RECORD.
IGNORE INDEX.
KEEP BELOW AUDIT.
The Ghost Signal returned.
"Jaybird. Follow the place they cannot correct."
The corridor opened into a room that did not exist on the vessel map. Jace saw a garden behind glass. Red trees grew from black soil, but their roots continued through apartment floors, battlefields, and recovery chambers. A dinner table stood at the center. One chair faced him.
Zoey stumbled backward. She pressed both hands against her throat.
"That room was inside me," she said.
The words carried no wonder. She sounded violated.
Jace ended the query before the image could pull more from her.

Zoey stared at the final line. Sunchain had hidden the domain inside recovered people because the Algorithm could not inspect what the House had already classified as harmless memory damage. She touched the place beneath her collarbone where the needle had entered.
"They used us as walls," she said.
Amelia stood beside her without reaching for the wound. "Do you want us to close the route?"
Zoey faced the glass and the red trees that existed inside memories taken from people who had never consented to carry them. Her answer took longer than the System's recommended response window.
"No," she said. "I want to know what they hid in me."
The choice gave Jace no reward screen. It left Zoey with the pain, the Garden with an entrance, and the Council with its first question that belonged to someone other than its host.
The Ghost Signal cleared for one final second.
"The Garden is where I left myself."
Coordinates burned across Jace's vision. Then every light in the records bay turned white.
