Level 999: The Glitch King
Chapter 116: Ghost Signal
"Jaybird, listen to me."
Jace knew the voice. That was the worst part. He could not place it. The sound lived somewhere behind childhood, close enough to hurt and too damaged to name. Seraphina watched his face.
Zoey began tagging memories by source instead of content: mine, Amelia, unknown, corridor witness, panic. The crude labels did not quiet anyone. They gave the Archive a way to sort relevance without appointing Jace as the person who decided whose voice mattered.
"You recognize it."
"I should."
The Archive shifted. Thousands of voices moved around the damaged signal without swallowing it.
GHOST SIGNAL DETECTED
Source: UNKNOWN.
Relationship Confidence:
FAMILIAL 61%.
Record Type:
DAMAGED LIVING STORAGE.
Signal Origin:
WITHIN SUNCHAIN VESSEL.
Source Confidence:
18%.
Identity-Bleed Risk:
HIGH.
Trace Progress:
4%.
Jace stared at LIVING STORAGE.
Amelia saw it too.
"That phrase predates the ash repositories."
"How old?"
"I don't know."
The voice returned.
"Not the main corridor."
A memory flashed: a white wall, a gold line, and a security door opening when a recovered man placed his palm against it. Then Jace was back on the records-bay floor. The memory had come from somebody else.
SOURCE IDENTIFIED

Expertise:
Sunchain Internal Security.
Memory Confidence: 73%.
Identity Bleed:
2%.
Cost:
Corruption +1%.
Corruption Load: 81% -> 82%.
Jace's mouth tasted like copper.
"Information charges interest now."
Amelia frowned at the panel.
"You asked the Archive a question."
Stolen from NovelPhoenix, this story should be reported if encountered on Amazon.
"I didn't."
"You thought about the corridor."
"Apparently counts."
A new interface opened.
ARCHIVE COUNCIL
Status:
UNSTABLE / INFORMAL.
Stored Identities: 18,442.
Currently Active: 14,211.
Coherent Speakers Detected: 46.
Voluntary Participants: 0.
Suggested Structure:
HOST MODERATES ALL SPEECH.
Jace selected DECLINE. The panel changed.
Alternative:
Participants self-select by relevance.
No host command priority.
Jace accepted that.
ARCHIVE COUNCIL
Voluntary Participants:
3... 7... 12.
Host Authority:
NONE.
Query Priority:
CONSENSUS / RELEVANCE.
Amelia smiled faintly.
"Better."
A new voice answered from inside Jace. Female. Young. Precise. The interface identified her.
ZOEY MARIS
Archive Classification:
LINGUIST / PARTIAL IDENTITY.
Memory Integrity: 44%.
Known Language Families: 19.
Dead Registry Scripts: 6.
Sunchain Command Dialects: 3.
Current Preference:
PARTICIPATE.
Jace let the connection open. A woman took shape at the edge of his vision. She was not physically in the records bay. Inside the Archive, she stood beside a wall covered in writing that changed alphabets every few seconds. Zoey touched one line.
"Living storage is older than recovery."
Amelia appeared beside her in the internal space.
"You know the term?"
"I know the grammar."
Zoey looked at Jace.
"Don't ask me what it means yet."
"Wasn't planning to."
"You were."
Fair. She traced the Ghost Signal. The damaged voice had embedded itself in a sequence of obsolete Sunchain commands. They were not exactly words, but permissions.
PASS FAMILY RECORD.
IGNORE INDEX.
KEEP BELOW AUDIT.
Zoey's expression changed.
"That last one."
Amelia moved closer.
"What?"
"Below audit."
Zoey translated again. The phrase shifted.
HIDE RECORD IN LIVING CARRIER.
The records bay felt colder. Jace looked at Joseph.
"You store hidden files inside recovered people?"
Joseph's face tightened.
"Not in current medical practice."
"Strong qualifier."
Zoey continued working.
"It's deliberate."
She pointed to a pattern repeated across several Archive identities. The same old command buried beneath recovery layers.
LIVING STORAGE NODE DETECTED
Recovered carriers with hidden sealed records:
12 confirmed.
61 probable.
Algorithm audit visibility:
LOW.
House visibility:
PARTIAL.
Jace looked at Amelia.
"The hierarchy hides records inside people because people are harder to audit."
Amelia's mouth tightened.
"Not people."
Jace waited.
"Recovered people. Quiet people. The kind nobody expects to contain anything except what their role allows."
Zoey turned away from the command wall. For the first time, the precision left her face.
"I had one."
"One what?"
"A hidden record."
Her fingers went to the base of her throat.
"I can feel where they put it."
The Archive supplied a memory. Zoey strapped to a white chair. Someone speaking kindly. A gold needle entering beneath her collarbone. She screamed. The memory cut.
IDENTITY BLEED
Source: Zoey Maris.
Bleed Chance:
19% -> 31%.
Jace acquired:
Phantom throat pain.
Command-language echo.
Corruption Load:
82% -> 84%.
Zoey stumbled inside the Archive.
Amelia caught her. Jace felt the needle in his own throat. He could not remember whether anyone had ever put one there. That was the cost. Information came attached to the body that learned it. Zoey breathed through the memory.
"Don't search that again."
Jace nodded. Her eyes sharpened.
"I mean it."
"Got it."
The Ghost Signal spoke.
"Jaybird. Service junction nine."
Zoey translated the command trace around it.
"He's giving a route."
"Where?"
"Deeper."
The vessel map opened.
SUNCHAIN FACILITY TRACE
Known Fragments:
6/12 -> 8/12.
Route:
Records Bay.
Medical Crossway.
Service Junction Nine.
Restricted Recovery Spine.
Destination: SEALED.
Ghost Signal Trace:
4% -> 19%.
Source Confidence:
18% -> 33%.
The route required crossing a security corridor. Three Archive participants volunteered memories of it. One remembered cameras. One remembered a maintenance hatch. One remembered being dragged through the same corridor after trying to escape. Jace saw all three.
Corruption Load: 84% -> 86%.
ARCHIVE QUERY PREVIEW
Knowledge retrieval through emotional association available.
Estimated Search Cost:
Corruption +3% per directed query.
Identity-Bleed Chance:
HIGH.
Archive Recall:
LOCKED.
Unlock Condition:
Complete controlled query without identity loss.
Seraphina read the panel.
"Do not use it yet."
Jace looked at the route.
"Wasn't going to."
The Archive heard destination. That was enough. Voices surged. Everyone who remembered a corridor wanted to help. Everyone who remembered Sunchain wanted to warn him. Everyone who had died in transit thought the danger was happening again.
ARCHIVE COUNCIL
Voluntary Participants:
12 -> 39 -> 206.
Relevant Sources:
17.
Panicked Sources:
189.
Signal Clarity:
71% -> 22%.
Zoey shouted for them to slow down. Amelia called names. Jace tried not to command anyone silent. The voices rose anyway. Wrong routes. Old passwords. Screaming. Warnings from vessels destroyed centuries ago. The Ghost Signal disappeared beneath them.
Signal Clarity:
22% -> 6%.
Jace could no longer hear Jaybird. Then the Archive panic flooded him with everything except the answer he needed, and every frightened memory insisted it was urgent.
None of them knew which memory had opened the door.
