Level 999: The Glitch King

Chapter 115: Voluntary Anchor

  • Next Chapter

Seraphina touched his wrist. Nothing exploded, no crown appeared, and no authority descended. Jace felt one hand, warm fingers and a pulse under skin. One body touching one body because both people had agreed. The simplicity cut through the Archive harder than a command.

Seraphina did not keep her hand on him once stabilization began. She loosened her grip first, giving Jace space to pull away. The System recorded no loss of integrity. When he shifted his wrist, the anchor followed the choice instead of the contact.

FREE ACCORD

Integrity: 59%.

Participants:

Jace.

Seraphina.

Ownership: NONE.

Command Hierarchy: NONE.

Withdrawal: AVAILABLE.

Emergency Function:

VOLUNTARY ANCHOR.

Consent:

MUTUAL / CURRENT.

Stabilization beginning.

The voices did not stop. Fourteen thousand people remained awake inside him. A man still cried for his wife. Someone still prayed in a language Jace did not know. Leo called for Hannah. Amelia's daughter remained faceless. Nothing had been solved by making it quiet. Seraphina tightened her hand.

"Where are you?"

Jace tried to answer. Three places arrived first: a battlefield, a kitchen, and a room with red trees outside the window. Then Manhattan.

"Earth."

"Where on Earth?"

"New York."

"Where in New York?"

The voices pushed. Jace found wet summer pavement, steam from a grate, a train shrieking somewhere underground, bad coffee, and sirens.

"Manhattan."

Body Recognition: 17% -> 28%.

Primary Identity Confidence: 45% -> 52%.

Identity Separation: 44% -> 49%.

Corruption Load: 89% -> 87%.

Joseph stared at the last number.

"No suppression."

Amelia was beside him.

"No."

"Archive activity?"

"Still fourteen thousand."

Joseph checked twice.

He looked almost offended by the result, not because it failed, but because it worked. Seraphina kept talking.

"Who has the shield?"

"Liam."

"What did you tell him?"

"Keep the lights on."

"What did he say?"

Jace's mouth twitched.

"Come get them yourself."

The memory landed cleanly. His memory. Liam's words. It was not an Archive echo.

MEMORY ANCHOR CONFIRMED

LIAM / SAFE ZONE HANDOFF

Integrity: 11% -> 26%.

Identity Separation: 49% -> 56%.

Voluntary Stabilization: 22% -> 39%.

Jace's knees stopped trying to become somebody else's. Then his body failed for a simpler reason.

Health: 29/420 -> 26/420.

Stamina: 5/160 -> 3/160.

Joseph moved closer.

"His identity is stabilizing. His body is not."

Seraphina looked at Jace.

"Can he receive treatment without memory suppression?"

Joseph hesitated.

"Yes."

"Without indexing the Archive?"

"Yes."

"Without touching the Accord?"

"Yes."

She looked at Jace. Not Joseph.

"Do you want it?"

Jace almost laughed.

"Very much."

Joseph opened a stripped treatment panel.

BODY-ONLY STABILIZATION

Targets:

Hemorrhage.

Cardiac strain.

Neural overload.

Dehydration.

Excluded by patient request:

Memory dampening.

Archive indexing.

Affective suppression.

Title correction.

Identity optimization.

Medical Charge Cost:

46.

Sunchain facility pays: YES.

Accept?

Jace selected YES. Warmth entered his arm. It was not the blank relief from recovery. Pain remained. So did he.

Health: 26/420 -> 39/420.

Stamina: 3/160 -> 14/160.

Corruption Load: 87% -> 84%.

Seraphina's hand stayed where it was. Amelia crouched on Jace's other side. He felt one of her memories brush him. A child's red coat. Rain. A laugh. There was no face. Amelia jerked back.

"Sorry."

Jace shook his head.

"Wasn't you."

She looked at him.

"You knew that?"

"Yeah."

Her face folded. The Archive had been forcing other people's lives through him for minutes. The fact that he could finally tell one grief from another was enough to make Amelia cry. She wiped at tears that did not fully exist.

"Again," she whispered.

Jace looked at her.

"Red coat. Yours."

Amelia nodded.

"My daughter."

"Hannah's kid had the car."

Hannah held it up from nearby.

"Red. Bent wheel."

"Seraphina thinks temporary registration is sometimes reasonable."

Seraphina frowned.

"Thought."

"Progress."

She almost laughed. The System moved.

[VOLUNTARY BOND STABILIZATION UNLOCKED]

A reversible relationship may stabilize identity under Archive overload without suppressing independent voices.

Requirements:

Existing voluntary relationship.

Mutual current consent.

Independent identity references.

Withdrawal remains possible.

System Warning:

Less efficient than Silence Protocol.

Jace read the warning.

"Would've worried me if it approved."

[RELATIONSHIP LEVEL UP]

FREE ACCORD Lv. 1 -> Lv. 2.

Integrity:

59% -> 74%.

New Role:

VOLUNTARY ANCHOR.

Anchor:

Seraphina.

Anchor Authority:

NONE.

Anchor Function:

Offer identity references.

Share stabilization load voluntarily.

Maintain Earth/relationship continuity.

Cannot:

Command host.

Silence Archive voices.

Prevent withdrawal.

Assume ownership.

Seraphina read every restriction before she breathed easier. Good. Seraphina kept reading the restrictions. Cannot command host. Cannot silence Archive voices. Cannot prevent withdrawal. Three things her old House would have called weaknesses.

"My family would have considered this dangerous."

That sounded accurate. A relationship the System could not force to continue was harder to weaponize. An anchor that could walk away could not become infrastructure.

"If I say stop, it stops?"

Jace opened the function.

WITHDRAW ANCHOR ROLE?

Either participant may withdraw without terminating Free Accord.

"Yes."

She selected WITHDRAW. The stabilization bonus dipped, but did not collapse. Then she selected REJOIN. Consent renewed. Free Accord Integrity remained 74%. Seraphina breathed out.

"Then it's real."

No seal brightened. No House approved it. The proof was that either of them could end it.

Joseph lowered his scanner only after confirming the count again. Sebastian stared at Seraphina's red protocol violation marker, then dismissed the disciplinary prompt without opening it.

SUNCHAIN COMPLIANCE

Sebastian Sunchain:

61% -> 55%.

Protocol violation reported:

NO.

Seraphina released Jace's wrist. The Accord remained. No penalty. No collapse. Withdrawal had been real. Jace sat on the floor breathing through pain that belonged to him. Around him, the Archive voices separated into people instead of weather. Amelia. Hannah. Leo.

Thousands he did not know yet. Then one voice crossed all of them. Male. Faint. Damaged. It did not call him Jace.

"Jaybird."

Jace stopped breathing. No one had called him that since he was a child. The voice spoke again.

"Jaybird, listen to me."
