Level 999: The Glitch King

Chapter 112: Eighteen Thousand Voices

  • Next Chapter

The archive entered Jace as people rather than information. A street he had never walked appeared beneath his feet, hot stone after rain, and disappeared before he could see where it led. Someone kissed a husband Jace had never met. A woman screamed in a language he understood only while she screamed it. A soldier died looking up at two moons. A child hid beneath a kitchen table and counted shoes moving past the doorway.

Jace tried counting breaths to separate himself from the Archive and lost track at four because three other people supplied different lungs. He switched to the pressure of his palms against the floor. Physical facts were harder for borrowed memories to counterfeit.

Someone laughed hard enough to hurt their stomach. Someone else forgot why they were laughing before the memory ended. The purge fired. White light tore through Ash Repository 01. It found an empty container. Jace hit the floor.

Jace could barely keep the text still. Hannah was crying somewhere nearby. Amelia knelt beside him. Or inside him. Both locations felt correct.

Joseph shouted for medical support. Sebastian shouted for everyone to keep the recovery field off. The orders collided somewhere outside Jace's attention. There were too many other things in the way. The System offered relief.

The button looked merciful. Sunchain's worst tools had always been able to prove they helped. Jace focused long enough to select NO. The panel remained.

Host death risk elevated.

He selected NO again.

The title settled badly inside him, another useful thing angry that he refused to use it correctly.

Amelia caught his shoulder. Jace felt the contact twice. Once through the hand resting against him. Again through a memory that was not his: Amelia holding a feverish little girl against her chest while rain struck an apartment window. Her daughter. The memory cut out before the girl's face appeared. Amelia jerked as if Jace had struck her.

"You saw that."

"Didn't mean to."

Her eyes filled. For the first time since she had emerged from the Archive, the historian disappeared from her expression completely. She was only a mother who had just learned that the missing part of her grief still existed somewhere, even if she could not reach it cleanly.

"What color were her eyes?" she asked.

Jace searched the memory. The Archive surged. A thousand lives pushed against the question. He saw blue eyes, brown eyes, silver eyes, eyes with vertical pupils, a child with no eyes at all.

"I don't know."

Amelia closed her own.

"Good."

Jace stared at her. She tightened her grip on his shoulder.

"If you had answered from somebody else's daughter, I would have believed you."

That frightened her more than forgetting. The System offered the Silence Protocol again. Amelia saw it.

"No."

Jace looked at her.

"You sure?"

Her hand shook.

"No."

She swallowed.

"But don't make us quiet because we're difficult to carry."

The choice registered.

INDEPENDENT ARCHIVE CONSENT EVENT

Speaker:

Amelia Hart.

Preference:

NO COMPULSORY SILENCE.

Identity Integrity:

CONFIRMED.

Archive Stability:

11% -> 13%.

The improvement was tiny. It mattered anyway. Joseph crouched a few feet away with a scanner trembling in his hand. Every medical instinct he had told him to reduce stimulus, isolate identities, make the numbers quiet. Instead he lowered the scanner.

"What do you need?" he asked.

Jace almost laughed. Eighteen thousand answers tried to arrive before his own.

"Space."

Joseph backed away. Sebastian ordered the officers farther from the repository doors. No restraints. No recovery field. No one touched Jace without asking. It was the least efficient medical response Sunchain had offered since he arrived. For once, inefficiency felt like progress. Nobody in the room called it treatment. Then the voices began waking. A man asking where his wife was. A girl repeating her name so nobody could take it.

A woman praying. Someone laughing. Someone screaming. Leo crying for his mother. Hannah answering him. Amelia telling everyone to slow down even as her own memories bled through Jace's vision.

ACTIVE VOICES

17.

38.

106.

411.

1,903.

Jace pressed both hands to the floor and tried to remember which heartbeat was his. The counter kept climbing.

Then thousands of voices woke inside him at once.
