Level 999: The Glitch King
Chapter 111: Purge Countdown
Sebastian arrived with six security officers and no weapon in his hands. That had stopped being reassuring.
The six officers did not stand alike. Two watched Jace, two watched the archive, one kept glancing at Sebastian, and the last rested a hand near a command seal he had not yet opened.
"Move away from the archive."
Jace remained beside the first ash repository.
"Pass."
PURGE COUNTDOWN: 00:04:52.
Joseph stepped between Sebastian and the nearest control panel.
"The purge is Algorithm-level."
"I know."
"Then helping it doesn't make it a House decision."
Sebastian's eyes moved to Hannah, then Amelia, then the rows of objects whispering names into the room.
"It makes it a maintenance order we cannot stop."
Amelia faced him.
"Do you remember Ash Cycle Seventeen?"
Sebastian went still.
"That record is sealed."
"I wrote it."
Joseph turned toward her. Amelia did not look at him.
"Four cities failed recovery compatibility. Their populations were reduced to archive fragments until House capacity returned."
Sebastian said nothing.
"It never returned."
PURGE COUNTDOWN: 00:04:21.
Amelia looked toward the ash columns.
"I told them storage was preservation."
Her voice cracked on the last word.
"I told families to stop fighting evacuation because no one was being deleted. I put my name on the assurance."
A pulse of gray light traveled through Repository Nine. Amelia flinched as if struck.
"My daughter was in there."
The room went quiet around that one sentence. Then the countdown kept moving. Jace opened Stability Analysis on the nearest repository.
[ARCHIVE CONTAINER SCAN]
Designation:
ASH REPOSITORY 01.
Contents:
Identity fragments: EXTREME VOLUME.
Coherent independent identities:
18,442.
Fragment coherence:
VARIABLE.
Registered Owner:
HOUSE SUNCHAIN.
Actual Origin:

MULTIPLE DELETED TERRITORIES.
Current Function:
Temporary preservation / memory extraction / historical reference.
Purge Status:
AUTHORIZED.
Jace ignored the contents and looked at the container. One ownership line connected the repository itself to Sunchain. Not the people inside. Archive Affinity made the distinction visible even while Breach Sight remained sealed.
CONTAINER OWNERSHIP SEAM DETECTED.
Sebastian saw Jace's expression.
"No."
"Starting to feel like a catchphrase."
"If you rupture the repository, the purge accelerates."
"Not rupturing it."
Jace opened a claim target.
CLAIM TARGET SELECTION
Target:
ASH REPOSITORY 01.
Contents:
EXCLUDED.
Claim container only?
The System hesitated.
ERROR.
Then another line appeared.
CONDITIONAL CLAIM AVAILABLE.
Ownership of container does not establish ownership over contained independent identities.
Warning:
Unowned identities inside an owned protection structure create extreme maintenance liability.
Jace read the warning.
"Now that sounds familiar."
Amelia moved beside him.
"What happens to you?"
"Bad things, probably."
"That was not an answer."
He looked at her.
"No idea."
She nodded once. She preferred that to a lie. Joseph opened the host projection.
HOST CAPACITY
Current Independent Identity Load: 1.
Safe External Memory Load: 8.
Estimated emergency fragment tolerance:
UNKNOWN.
Projected result at archive scale:
CATASTROPHIC.
Recommended Optimization:
INDEX CONTENTS.
SILENCE NONESSENTIAL IDENTITIES.
MERGE DUPLICATE MEMORY.
REMOVE LOW-VALUE EMOTIONAL DATA.
Amelia read the last line. Her face emptied.
"Low-value emotional data."
Joseph looked at her.
"That phrase is part of the old optimization model."
"They used it on my daughter."
Her voice dropped.
"I remember the rain at her funeral. I remember the dress I buried her in. I remember standing beside the grave and thinking I would never survive it."
Her eyes closed.
"I cannot remember her face."
Joseph shut the optimization panel.
SUNCHAIN FACTION RESPONSE
Joseph Serein:
Recovery Doctrine Confidence: 28% -> 17%.
Sebastian Sunchain:
Recovery Doctrine Confidence: 69% -> 57%.
Sebastian stared at the change, then at Amelia. For once he did not argue with the metric.
PURGE COUNTDOWN: 00:02:37.
Jace selected CLAIM CONTAINER.
ASH REPOSITORY 01
Claimant: Jace.
Contained Identities:
NOT PROPERTY.
Maintenance Liability:
ACCEPTED.
Claim Status:
CONTESTED.
The ownership line pulled tight. Sunchain on one side. Jace on the other. The hidden Error Mark inside the transport route woke.
Signal Strength: 0.9% -> 2.4%.
Access remained 3%.
For one narrow instant, the repository seam became actionable.
RULE FRACTURE
Availability:
TEMPORARY / ARCHIVE-AFFINITY ASSISTED.
Target:
Repository Ownership Line.
Warning:
Removing House ownership leaves repository legally unsupported during purge.
Cost:
Corruption +9%.
Apply?
Jace selected YES.
Corruption Load: 46% -> 55%.
Pain ripped behind his eyes.
His knees hit the floor hard enough to bruise.
Health: 88/420 -> 81/420.
RULE FRACTURE COMPLETE.
Registered Owner:
HOUSE SUNCHAIN -> NONE.
Claimant Protection:
JACE / CONTAINER ONLY.
Contained Identity Ownership:
NONE.
PURGE COUNTDOWN: 00:01:16.
Amelia dropped beside him.
"You are bleeding."
Jace wiped his nose with the back of his hand.
"Apparently still have some."
The purge vents opened overhead. White light gathered behind metal grilles. Joseph looked up.
"Ignition is armed."
Sebastian turned toward his officers. His hand stopped over the command seal at his wrist. Jace watched the same man who had escorted him here under lawful extraction authority hesitate in front of a lawful purge order. Sebastian had defended recovery because he believed survival justified the method. The ash repositories had taken that argument away from him one preserved mother at a time. He looked at Amelia.
"My father told me archives were mercy."
Amelia's answer was quiet.
"Sometimes they were."
That made his decision harder, not easier. Sebastian closed the command seal.
"Stand down."
One of them stared at him.
"Commander?"
"Do not interfere with the claimant."
SUNCHAIN COMPLIANCE
Sebastian Sunchain: 87% -> 61%.
Direct procedural refusal recorded: 1.
One officer stepped back immediately. Another kept his weapon raised until Sebastian repeated the order. A third looked up at the purge vents and lowered his own command seal without opening it. Nobody cheered. Amelia looked at Sebastian. He did not meet her eyes. Jace opened the only route left.
EMERGENCY ARCHIVE TRANSFER
Destination:
CLAIMANT HOST.
Coherent Identities:
18,442.
Additional Incomplete Fragments:
UNCOUNTED.
Recommended Preparation:
INDEX.
SILENCE.
OPTIMIZE.
Jace selected none.
HOST CAPACITY WARNING:
EXCEEDED.
Transfer?
Amelia grabbed his wrist. Her hand felt solid. It was not memory-solid, but it was real enough to stop him.
"No indexing," she said.
"No."
"No silencing people because they panic."
"No."
"No merging lives because the System thinks their grief looks similar."
Jace looked at her.
"No."
The purge reached ten seconds. Amelia's grip loosened. She was terrified. She was not terrified of dying. She was terrified of surviving as something easier to store. She nodded. Jace selected TRANSFER.
The first endangered records tore free of the burning archive and rushed into him.
