Level 999: The Glitch King

Chapter 113: Host Capacity Exceeded

  • Next Chapter

The first thousand voices sounded like panic. The next thousand stopped sounding like anything. Jace knelt on the records-bay floor with both palms pressed against metal that kept becoming other surfaces beneath him. Cold tile. Wet grass. A hospital bed. Sand hot enough to blister feet he had never owned. Someone was drowning. Someone was giving birth. Someone was eleven years old and hiding under stairs while men in silver armor searched the house.

Jace opened his mouth. Three names came out. None were his.

HOST CAPACITY EXCEEDED

Stored Independent Identities: 18,442.

Active Voices: 6,117.

Archive Stability: 13%.

Identity Separation: 62% -> 47%.

Name Integrity: UNSTABLE.

Corruption Load: 79% -> 82%.

Health: 71/420 -> 58/420.

Recommended Action:

SILENCE PROTOCOL.

He rejected it before the button finished rendering. The room lurched.

Joseph reached for him, stopped, and asked, "Can I touch you?"

Jace tried to answer. A woman inside him said yes. A man said no. A child screamed for his father.

Jace managed, "Not yet."

Joseph backed away. That helped more than Jace expected. One decision had remained his. Amelia crouched within arm's reach. Her physical outline flickered, but the version of her inside the Archive was painfully clear. He could feel the missing shape of her daughter like a door in a wall.

"Jace."

He looked toward her voice. Recognition surfaced, thin and fast, then slipped away before he could hold it.

"Say your name."

"Jace."

The Archive answered with eighteen other names.

NAME CONFUSION

Primary Identity Confidence: 54%.

Intrusive Names:

Aren.

Mika.

Sol.

Darius.

Unknown x14.

Jace wiped blood from his nose.

"Crowded."

Stolen from its rightful author, this tale is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.

Amelia did not smile.

"Again."

"Jace."

Primary Identity Confidence: 54% -> 57%.

Stabilization Progress: 3%.

Hannah appeared beside Amelia, less solid than before but furious enough to make up the difference.

"Leo."

The red toy car warmed in Jace's restricted inventory. A child's memory pushed through the noise. Kitchen floor. Peeling cabinet paint.

4:19 on a microwave.

Waiting. The image belonged to Leo. Jace knew that with a certainty he could still name, and the separation held long enough for the System to notice.

IDENTITY SEPARATION

Recognized External Memory: +1.

Separation: 47% -> 51%.

Stabilization Progress: 3% -> 7%.

Hannah saw the change.

"Tell him what's yours," she said.

Amelia shook her head.

"No. Make him tell us."

Hannah looked at her.

"He can barely speak."

"Which is exactly why we cannot put answers in his mouth."

Neither woman was wrong. That made Jace want to laugh, but someone else's grief came out instead and turned it into a sob. He hated that more. Amelia's face changed, not because he cried, but because she could not tell whose crying it was either. She sat on the floor. She gave him no instructions or commands.

"I am Amelia Hart," she said. "I had a daughter. I cannot remember her face. That grief is mine."

Hannah understood.

"I am Hannah Bell. Leo is my son. Apartment 4B was our home. That waiting belongs to us."

The voices shifted. The voices were not quieter, only more separated. Jace swallowed.

"Benjamin."

The name hurt. Good.

"He died holding a gate."

A memory struck him. A different gate. A soldier with four arms bracing it against fire. Jace shook his head.

"Not that one."

IDENTITY SEPARATION

False Association Rejected.

Willpower Proficiency: +4%.

Primary Identity Confidence: 57% -> 63%.

Corruption Load: 82% -> 81%.

The number dropped. Joseph saw it. His scanner lowered.

"You reduced Corruption."

"No silence," Amelia said.

Joseph looked at the six thousand active voices still spiking across the panel.

"No silence," he repeated.

The words sounded less like doctrine now. More like evidence. Amelia turned both palms upward as though proving she carried no tool. Ash-colored static crawled through her fingers.

"When Sunchain stored us, they called stillness preservation," she said. "I used to believe them because still things do not look frightened."

Her eyes moved across Jace's face, searching for the person behind every borrowed expression.

"I will not help them make you still."

Hannah looked at her.

"And I won't let him die just to prove us right."

Amelia nodded.

"Good."

The disagreement stayed between them without becoming a fracture. A door alarm sounded beyond the records bay. Sebastian turned toward it.

"Escort claim."

Jace barely heard him.

"What?"

Another alarm. Then Seraphina's voice came through the sealed door.

"Open it."

Sebastian stared at the authorization.

LEGAL ESCORT CLAIM

Petitioner: Seraphina Noble.

Basis:

Material witness to extracted claimant.

Active Free Accord.

House Trial evidence continuity.

Access:

OBSERVATION ONLY.

Physical intervention: PROHIBITED.

Sebastian looked at Jace. Then opened the door. Seraphina stepped through. Dust marked one side of her white travel coat. Her hair had come loose at the temple. She had followed a Sunchain recovery vessel across whatever counted as distance here and looked angry enough to do it again. Jace knew her. Then he didn't. Her face became a woman standing beneath red trees. Then a Sunchain technician.

Then someone's sister.

NAME CONFUSION CRITICAL

Seraphina Noble:

Recognition Confidence 91% -> 48%.

Archive Substitutions: 37.

Identity Separation: 51% -> 39%.

Health: 58/420 -> 49/420.

Seraphina stopped three steps away.

"Jace."

A thousand voices answered her. One called her Lysa. One begged her not to leave. Another remembered killing her. Jace recoiled. Seraphina did not come closer. Good. The Archive surged again.

Active Voices: 6,117 -> 9,804.

Archive Stability: 13% -> 9%.

Corruption Load: 81% -> 84%.

Stabilization Progress: 7% -> 4%.

SILENCE PROTOCOL RECOMMENDED.

Hannah shouted over the voices.

"Don't let it choose for you!"

Amelia said, "Don't make him choose anything right now!"

Both were right again. Jace looked down. His hands were brown. Then pale. Then covered in gold scales. Then small enough to belong to a child. He felt lungs breathing in four different rhythms. A blade wound in a stomach he did not have. A wedding ring on a finger that was not there. The records-bay floor vanished beneath memories of twelve different deaths.

Jace tried to find his own body. For the first time since the Archive entered him, he could not tell which one was his.
