Level 999: The Glitch King

Chapter 108: Apartment 4B

  • Next Chapter

Joseph wanted the car sealed. Jace wanted it opened. Hannah wanted neither of them to decide for her.

Joseph asked Hannah what she wanted before touching the next control. The question was small, but she noticed. So did Jace. Procedure could change one sentence at a time before institutions admitted anything had changed.

"No."

Her voice was stronger now, though the edges of her body still broke into static whenever the records bay tried to scan her. The red car sat on the table between them. Joseph kept both hands visible and away from it.

"Activating the resonance could destabilize what remains of you."

Hannah looked at him.

"You keep saying what remains like I'm not standing here."

Joseph flinched. Good. Jace had watched enough people become files to know the process usually started in language. Joseph corrected himself.

"It could hurt you."

Hannah looked down at the car.

"I don't know if you can hurt what's left."

The room answered for him.

[OBJECT ANALYSIS]

RED TOY CAR

Rarity:

RESONANT RELIC, DORMANT.

Physical Condition: POOR.

Registered Owner: NONE.

Prior Owner Record: DELETED.

Associated Identity Fragment:

LEO BELL.

Memory Integrity: 8%.

Emotional Weight: CRITICAL.

Resonance Type:

WAITING / HOME / MATERNAL BOND.

Unindexed Memory: PRESENT.

Joseph stepped closer to the panel.

"Eight percent."

"Enough?" Jace asked.

"No."

Hannah answered at the same time.

"Yes."

Joseph looked at her.

"We do not know what the other ninety-two percent contains."

"I don't need ninety-two percent."

Her gaze stayed on the little car.

"I need my son."

Joseph's mouth closed. The System opened three options.

RESONANCE HANDLING

INDEX FRAGMENT

Benefits:

Stability increased.

Memory contamination prevented.

Identity reconstructed under Sunchain record.

STERILIZE OBJECT

Benefits:

Emotional agitation removed.

Object becomes inert.

No contamination risk.

LEAVE DORMANT

Benefits:

Current fragment preserved.

No additional memory access.

Jace waited for a fourth option. Nothing appeared.

"Strong menu."

Joseph stared at INDEX.

"If we index it, there is a chance the Leo fragment could be reconstructed."

Hannah looked at him.

"As what?"

Joseph did not answer. The Stable Heirs answered for him anyway. A catalogue number that remembered how to hold a toy car. A preserved child who might recognize the shape of a kitchen without caring whether his mother came through the door. Hannah shook her head.

"No."

Joseph's voice softened.

"Hannah."

"No."

The records bay scanned her refusal.

IDENTITY AUTHORITY:

UNREGISTERED.

Decision Validity:

INSUFFICIENT.

Hannah read the words. Her expression did not collapse all at once. Her mouth parted. Her hand rose halfway toward the panel, then stopped when the light passed through her fingers.

"I remember carrying him for nine months."

Joseph said nothing.

"I remember him cutting his chin on the radiator because he wouldn't stop jumping off the couch. I remember every stupid song he made me play in the car."

She looked at the System.

"But I don't count enough to say no?"

Joseph looked away. Jace selected LEAVE DORMANT.

DENIED.

Patient custody authority: NONE.

Object remains under House Sunchain archive jurisdiction.

Joseph had authority. Hannah did not. Jace did not. Only the physician in the room possessed enough registered status to leave a six-year-old's toy alone. The System made the imbalance cleaner by adding percentages.

AUTHORIZED DECISION WEIGHT

Joseph Serein: 100%.

Jace: 0%.

Hannah Bell: 0%.

Hannah laughed once. There was no humor in it.

"Zero."

Joseph's face tightened.

"Hannah, that number is jurisdiction, not worth."

"Does the car know the difference?"

He did not answer. She stepped closer to the table. Static climbed her forearms where the archive struggled to hold her shape.

"If you index him, will he remember me?"

"Possibly."

"Will he miss me?"

Joseph hesitated.

"That response could be categorized as destabilizing attachment."

Hannah went completely still. Jace saw Joseph realize what he had said.

"So you can save the memory of my face," Hannah said, "and cure him of wanting me."

"No one would describe it that way."

"I just did."

The car gave a tiny click against the tabletop, one bent wheel turning without being touched. Joseph looked at it. Then at Hannah. For once, he had no medical language ready fast enough to hide behind. Joseph stared at the authorization prompt. His finger hovered over INDEX. Jace watched him.

"You really think indexing saves him?"

"I think it may preserve more."

"More what?"

Joseph looked at Hannah. More information was not necessarily more Leo. Joseph moved his hand.

SUNCHAIN PHYSICIAN OVERRIDE

Decision:

LEAVE DORMANT.

Object remains unindexed.

Sterilization deferred.

Joseph Serein:

Recovery Doctrine Confidence: 51% -> 43%.

Unauthorized preservation events: 1.

Hannah looked at him.

"Thank you."

Joseph's shoulders dropped.

"You should not have to thank me for that."

"No."

She looked at the authority panel until it vanished.

"I shouldn't."

The car pulsed.

Memory Integrity: 8% -> 11%.

The room went dark. Plastic wheels scraped linoleum. When light returned, the records bay was gone. A kitchen surrounded them. Small. New York small. White cabinets with paint peeling at the handles. A refrigerator buried beneath magnets and a school calendar. Afternoon sun leaned through one narrow window and caught dust in the air. A little boy lay on his stomach between the table and the refrigerator. Leo.

The red car rolled between his hands.

"Vroom."

Hannah covered her mouth. Leo pushed the car beneath a chair, crawled after it, then looked toward the apartment door. Empty.

A microwave clock read 4:17.

He pushed the car back.

4:18.

Another trip across the kitchen floor.

4:19.

Hannah stepped toward him.

"Baby."

Her hand passed through his shoulder. The memory did not know she was there. Leo sat cross-legged beside the front door and lined the little car carefully against the baseboard. He waited. Hannah knelt beside him even though he could not see her. She traced the air above his hair without touching it. Her lips moved around words Jace could not hear. She stayed there when the clock changed again, as if refusing to let the memory leave him alone a second time.

The System had failed to keep the boy.

The toy had remembered exactly what he was doing when the world ended.
