Level 999: The Glitch King

Chapter 107: The Red Toy Car

  • Next Chapter

The harvest began seventeen minutes after the room decided Jace was asleep. He was not. A low vibration moved through the recovery bed and settled behind his sternum. Warmth followed, almost pleasant, until he noticed the pull underneath it. His body was making something. The vessel was taking it.

He waited through two more harvest pulses before acting so he could measure the rhythm. Sunchain's system repeated the same draw interval each cycle. That predictability turned theft into a timing problem instead of a gamble.

NIGHTLY RECOVERY CYCLE

Health restoration: ACTIVE.

Memory suppression: ACTIVE.

Charge harvest: ACTIVE.

Generated Charge: 3... 6... 10...

Patient retention: 0%.

Facility transfer: 100%.

Jace watched the number climb.

"Hospital with a tip jar."

The conduit beneath the mattress pulsed. Stability Analysis had shown him the regulator before Sunchain returned him to the cell. It was reversible. Sunchain used one direction because patients were never expected to have enough Access left to argue with plumbing. Jace found the Error Mark hidden inside his extraction record.

Signal Strength: 0.9%.

He pushed it into the regulator.

CHARGE-DRAIN REVERSAL

Current Flow:

PATIENT -> FACILITY.

Reverse flow authorization: NONE.

Exploit window: 00:00:09.

He selected it anyway. The conduit snapped cold. Charge rushed the wrong direction. His back came off the mattress as power punched through him.

Charge: 0/140 -> 23/140.

The bed lit gold.

UNAUTHORIZED RESOURCE FLOW.

HARVEST FAILURE.

RECOVERY IRREGULARITY DETECTED.

Jace severed the connection before the vessel could correct it.

Corruption Load: 32% -> 35%.

Suppression Resistance: 21% -> 28%.

Recovery Progress: 34% -> 37%.

"Always a fee."

The sleep field died. The door remained shut. Jace stood. His legs felt better than they had any right to. Sunchain had repaired enough of him that walking no longer felt like negotiating with broken glass. He hated needing the repair almost as much as he hated how useful it was. The room still considered him a patient. That was the second mistake.

PATIENT MOBILITY REQUEST

Sanitation Unit.

Medical Observation Corridor.

Emergency Physician Station.

Records Consultation: RESTRICTED.

Jace selected Records Consultation.

DENIED.

He selected it again and fed four Charge through the Error Mark.

Charge: 23 -> 19.

ACCESS REQUEST CORRUPTED.

Records Consultation:

RESTRICTED -> CONDITIONAL.

Condition:

Patient possesses unresolved identity record.

He remembered the whisper through the wall. Apartment 4B.

"Probably unresolved enough."

The door opened. No alarm sounded. Outside, the corridor had the same polished white walls and buried gold lines as every other part of the vessel. Sunchain architecture had the personality of a clean knife. Jace followed the faint drag of the Error Mark. Left at the physician station. Down a service corridor. Past a locked ward where someone laughed once and then stopped too quickly.

SUNCHAIN FACILITY MAP

Fragments: 5/12 -> 6/12.

New Node:

RECORDS BAY.

The whisper returned.

"Four B."

A woman's voice this time. Jace stopped.

"Hello?"

Nothing.

Then, softer:

"Leo?"

He followed it. The records-bay door opened on his corrupted consultation clearance. Dust hit him first. Actual dust. After hours of filtered air and polished surfaces, the smell felt almost illegal. Shelves stretched beyond the doorway in rows too long to see through. Clear boxes held cracked phones, shoes, jewelry, paper photographs, keys, toys, clothing. Things too ordinary for Sunchain to consider dangerous. A panel opened.

[HIDDEN EXPLORATION QUEST]

THE THINGS THEY LEFT BEHIND

Investigate Sunchain's unindexed personal-effects archive.

Objectives:

Trace the Apartment 4B signal.

Locate identity data absent from official recovery records.

Avoid automatic indexing.

Failure:

Resonance sterilization.

Fragment transfer to recovery processing.

Jace walked the first aisle slowly. A child's sneaker. A wedding ring. A MetroCard bent through the middle. A yellow bowl with one side chipped away. Every box carried a clean label.

OWNER DELETED.

NO STRATEGIC VALUE.

DISPOSAL DEFERRED.

The System had saved the objects because throwing them away had apparently never become urgent. People had been easier. Someone entered behind him. Joseph Serein stopped in the doorway.

"You are supposed to be unconscious."

"Didn't take."

Joseph's gaze moved to Jace's Charge, then to the open door.

"How did you get nineteen Charge?"

"Restorative sleep."

Joseph closed his eyes.

"I am choosing not to ask."

"Healthy boundary."

The whisper came again.

"Leo."

A box three aisles over flashed red. Joseph heard it. His expression changed.

"That archive does not produce live resonance."

"Apparently nobody told the archive."

They moved together. The deeper shelves were worse. A birthday card burned along one edge. Half a pair of glasses. A tiny Statue of Liberty keychain. A phone whose dead screen briefly showed two women laughing before going black again. Then a face appeared in the glass of one sealed container. Brown skin. Dark hair pulled back. Tired eyes searching past them. The image flickered.

UNINDEXED RESONANCE DETECTED.

Identity Fragment:

HANNAH BELL.

Body Record: DELETED.

Official Recovery Record: NONE.

Fragment Source:

UNRESOLVED PERSONAL ATTACHMENT.

Joseph went still.

"Sunchain never indexed her."

Hannah heard him. Her eyes dropped to her own hands as if she expected a catalogue number to be written there and found only flickering skin. She pressed one palm to her chest. Nothing moved beneath it. No heartbeat. No breath. Still, when the whisper came again, her whole face turned toward it before either man did.

"I know that voice," she said.

The woman returned. She was not a ghost or even a full projection, more like memory forcing itself into a shape because something nearby mattered enough.

"Leo?"

Her eyes locked on a lower shelf. Jace followed them. A red plastic wheel showed beneath a folded child's shirt. He pulled the box free. Inside sat a toy car with paint rubbed pale at the corners and one front wheel bent inward. The System dismissed it instantly.

LOW-VALUE PERSONAL EFFECT.

The Error Mark touched the scan. The label cracked.

UNINDEXED RESONANCE DETECTED.

Object:

RED TOY CAR.

Associated Identity:

LEO BELL.

Age at deletion: 6.

Residence:

MANHATTAN.

APARTMENT 4B.

Body Record:

DELETED DURING FORMAT.

Memory Fragment:

PRESENT.

Hannah made a sound that did not become a word. Jace looked from her to the worn red car. The System had managed to erase a six-year-old boy.

It had missed the thing he loved enough to leave part of himself inside.
