Level 999: The Glitch King
Chapter 109: Is Manhattan Still There
The kitchen vanished. Hannah stayed on her knees. For several seconds she did not seem to notice the records bay had returned around her. One hand remained lifted where Leo's hair had been. The other pressed against the floor, though her fingers flickered through it whenever the archive lost track of her shape.
Jace wrote the new quest into memory the way he would a route through Manhattan: destination, anchors, failure point. Apartment 4B was no longer only grief. It was somewhere they might eventually have to physically find.
Then she whispered, "I was late."
Joseph looked at Jace. Neither answered. Hannah's eyes stayed on the red car.
"I stopped after work."
Her voice was steadier than her face.
"He wanted cereal with the marshmallows in it. The bodega downstairs charged too much, so I walked three blocks to the grocery store."
A tiny laugh escaped her and broke immediately.
"There was one woman arguing about coupons. That's what I remember."
The archive did not soften the memory. No recovery field trimmed the grief into manageable pieces. No physician converted it into factual recall. Hannah looked at the microwave clock preserved inside the car's resonance.
4:19.
"I was eight minutes away."
Joseph lowered his eyes. Jace did not tell her she could not have known. True things were not always useful things. The world had ended while a mother bought cereal. There was no sentence that made the timing less obscene. The car pulsed again.
RED TOY CAR
Rarity:
RESONANT RELIC.
Status:
AWAKENED.
Physical Condition: POOR.
Memory Integrity: 11%.
Emotional Resonance: CRITICAL.
Primary Anchor:
LEO BELL.
Secondary Anchor:
HANNAH BELL.
Location Anchor:
APARTMENT 4B / MANHATTAN.
Effects:
Identity Suppression Resistance +12%.
Archive Affinity: UNLOCKED.
Archive Affinity: 0% -> 9%.
Jace read the suppression resistance twice. Sunchain had spent hours trying to keep him stable by removing whatever hurt enough to make him resist. A cheap plastic toy did the opposite. It kept the pain attached to the person. Messier. Less efficient. Still theirs.

[ANCHOR UNLOCKED]
LEO ANCHOR
Type:
Resonant Memory Anchor.
Function:
Preserves identity continuity through remembered relationship and place.
Cannot provide:
Combat guidance.
System authority.
Future knowledge.
Can provide:
Identity reference.
Emotional continuity.
Location resonance.
Jace glanced at Joseph.
"Glad they clarified the six-year-old isn't tactical support."
Joseph looked tired enough to almost laugh. Hannah touched the car. This time her fingers did not pass entirely through it. The toy shifted less than an inch. She jerked her hand back.
"I felt that."
Joseph stepped closer. The System scanned her before he could.
UNINDEXED IDENTITY INTERACTION CONFIRMED.
Hannah Bell
Memory Integrity: 14%.
Official Existence: NONE.
Independent Preference: DETECTED.
Joseph stared at the last line.
"Preference."
Hannah looked at him.
"Is that surprising?"
"No."
He swallowed.
"It's inconvenient."
"For who?"
Joseph had no answer he wanted to say aloud. Sunchain's recovery architecture treated identity variance as damage. Preference was variance. Wanting one thing instead of another made a person harder to stabilize, harder to assign, harder to harvest. Hannah had no body, no registered status, and barely fourteen percent memory integrity. She still wanted something. The System had measured it. That made pretending she was only data harder than any argument Jace could make.
She touched her own cheek, testing whether the shape remained, then looked toward the aisle where hundreds of other discarded objects sat under labels that said their owners were gone.
"How many?" she asked.
Joseph knew what she meant.
"I don't know."
"How many people did the registry miss because what was left of them was attached to something too cheap to scan?"
"I don't know."
Hannah nodded slowly. The answer hurt, but she did not ask him to soften it.
"Then Leo isn't a miracle," she said. "He's evidence."
Joseph flinched harder at that than he had at any accusation. Hannah looked at him.
"Can you take it?"
"The car?"
"Leo."
The question landed carefully. Jace did not answer quickly enough to make it sound heroic.
"I don't know what taking him does."
"Good."
He frowned. Hannah's eyes were wet, though the tears broke into static before reaching her jaw.
"Don't tell me yes because I'm his mother."
That sounded familiar. She continued.
"If taking him means he becomes one of those people in the ward, leave him here."
Joseph looked away.
"If taking him means he stays Leo..."
Her voice failed. She tried again.
"Then don't leave my son in a box."
The relic opened a new prompt.
RESONANT RELIC ACQUISITION
Object:
Red Toy Car.
Ownership: NONE REQUIRED.
Relationship:
CARRIER / WITNESS.
Associated identity remains independent.
Carry object?
Jace selected YES. No ownership line appeared. The car settled into his restricted inventory without losing physical presence. He could still feel its worn plastic against his palm.
[RESONANT RELIC ACQUIRED]
RED TOY CAR
Suppression Resistance: ACTIVE.
Leo Anchor: ACTIVE.
Archive Affinity: 9% -> 17%.
Memory Anchor Proficiency: 17% -> 28%.
Recovery Dampening Effectiveness:
82% -> 71%.
Recovery Progress:
37% -> 39%.
The facility considered remembering a child a medical setback.
"Of course."
Another panel opened immediately.
[HIDDEN QUEST]
RESTORE APARTMENT 4B
Objective:
Determine whether erased locations can persist through emotional resonance after physical deletion.
Known Anchors:
Leo Bell.
Hannah Bell.
Red Toy Car.
Location:
Manhattan / Apartment 4B.
Physical Status:
UNKNOWN.
Requirements:
Reach Earth.
Locate matching spatial record.
Preserve Leo Anchor.
Reward: SEALED.
Failure:
Anchor degradation.
Hannah saw the destination.
"Manhattan."
"Yeah."
"Do you know if it's still there?"
"Last I checked."
"That was before they took you."
Fair. Joseph went to the records terminal.
"I can request a current territorial verification."
EARTH RECORD ACCESS:
RESTRICTED BY CROWNLINE EXTRACTION SENTENCE.
He tried physician clearance. Denied. House credentials. Denied. The car warmed in Jace's hand. A tiny sound came from inside it.
"Mom?"
Hannah stopped moving. The voice was not a recording. It was too uncertain for that. A child-shaped fragment testing whether anyone remained on the other side of waiting. Hannah leaned toward the car.
"I'm here, baby."
Leo was quiet. Then he asked the question nobody in the room could answer with certainty.
"Is Manhattan still there?"
