Level 999: The Glitch King

Chapter 103: Memory Agitation Restricted

  • Next Chapter

Jace spent the next hour trying to make himself miserable. The room kept helping. He thought of Benjamin. The memory dulled. He thought of Brooklyn's daughter under the failing west barrier. The panic disappeared before it could reach his chest. He thought of Noah asking whether protection still meant anything if Jace decided everything for him. The words remained. The feeling behind them did not.

A baseline meant the next attempt could fail for a reason he understood.

He began keeping a mental test set. Benjamin for grief. Noah for disagreement. Seraphina for attachment. Liam for irritation. Manhattan for place. Each memory probed a different part of the dampening field. The room reduced them by different amounts, which meant suppression was targeted rather than general.

He repeated the neutral receiving-dock memory twice. Same result. Then Benjamin again. Immediate suppression. Jace had enough of a baseline now to stop guessing. The cage was selectively editing conflict, not merely reducing stress.

He tested one neutral memory as a control: the hardware store receiving dock, the smell of cardboard dust, a pallet jack with a wheel that always pulled left. The room barely touched it. Distress was the trigger. Sunchain was not erasing memory indiscriminately. It was trimming whatever created conflict with recovery.

That precision frightened him more. A crude system could destroy a person by accident. This one knew exactly which parts of him were inconvenient.

That gave Jace a progression goal he could actually work: identify one memory Sunchain could not flatten without destroying useful identity data. He did not know which memory would survive. He only knew the answer would have to matter to someone besides him.

MEMORY AGITATION CONTROL

Threshold: 18%.

Current agitation: 22%.

Automatic dampening applied.

Emotional intensity: -37%.

Recovery Progress: 13% -> 15%.

Jace sat on the edge of the bed.

"That's cheating."

The room offered no opinion. He searched for Seraphina next. He remembered her hand. The Free Accord. Fifty-nine percent. Her face when she realized he was surrendering his body, not the case. Then the memory slid away from the feeling attached to it. It was not erased, only filed somewhere he could not reach.

MEMORY AGITATION RESTRICTED

Relationship-linked distress exceeds recovery allowance.

Recommended substitution:

Factual recall only.

Jace looked at the phrase.

"Factual recall."

He could remember the shape of someone without remembering why they mattered. That was Sunchain's version of preservation. The door opened. Sebastian entered alone. Jace did not look at him.

"What's your sister's favorite food?"

Sebastian stopped.

"What?"

"Charlotte."

His eyes sharpened.

"What does that have to do with treatment?"

"Answer."

Sebastian hesitated.

"Roasted sel fruit."

"She still like it?"

"Yes."

"How do you know?"

"Because she complains when the kitchens overcook it."

Jace nodded.

"Good."

Sebastian's suspicion deepened.

"What are you doing?"

"Checking if recovery got you too."

The temperature in the room seemed to drop.

"I was never recovered."

"Then you know what your sister likes."

"Yes."

Jace finally looked at him.

"Ask one of your perfect patients."

Sebastian's face hardened.

"You haven't met them."

"Didn't ask if I had."

Recovery Progress ticked.

15% -> 16%.

Sebastian crossed to the wall and opened the cell controls.

"Your memory agitation threshold is intentionally low. Raising it would increase Corruption."

"By letting me remember why I'm pissed?"

"By restoring conflicting emotional load."

"Same sentence with nicer shoes."

Sebastian selected a diagnostic.

CELL ANALYSIS

Containment Class: Crownline Recovery.

Memory Dampening: 82%.

Affective Dampening: 64%.

Authority Isolation: 97%.

External Signal Rejection: 99.7%.

Internal Identity Variance: 6%.

Projected successful recovery: 91%.

Jace caught the external rejection line. Ninety-nine point seven. Something was getting through. He could not use Breach Sight. He could still count.

"Why not a hundred?"

Sebastian looked at the panel.

"No isolation field is absolute."

"Comforting."

"Not for you."

Jace closed his eyes. He stopped chasing people. Stopped chasing memories. He looked instead for absence. There. At the edge of his wrists. A faint pressure where the transport seal had been. He followed it. Nothing. Then something.

A scratch beneath a wall.

ERROR MARK SIGNAL

Signal Strength: 0.2%.

Jace did not react. Sebastian was still watching him.

"Your agitation is falling."

"Thinking calm thoughts."

"About?"

"Tax law."

Sebastian almost believed him. The signal pulsed again. 0.2%. Jace followed it backward. The path was damaged, stretched across whatever distance separated the vessel from Manhattan, but it still carried one fact.

Destination reference:

SPIRE AUTHENTICATION TRACE.

Not the full Spire.

Not Liam.

Not the Safe Zone dashboard.

A scar in the legal route that had brought him here. Enough. Jace touched it mentally. The cell reacted.

EXTERNAL SIGNAL CONTACT DETECTED

Source: UNRESOLVED.

Memory Agitation: 31%.

Recovery Progress: 16% -> 18%.

Suppression intensity increasing.

The Spire trace dimmed. Jace pushed harder. Pain returned behind his eyes.

Corruption Load: 26% -> 29%.

Sebastian stepped forward.

"Stop."

Jace held the signal.

0.2% -> 0.3%.

"Jace."

The officer disappeared from Sebastian's voice. That was more useful than shouting. Jace let go. The signal remained. 0.3%. Sebastian stared at the cell analysis.

"That should be impossible."

"Getting repetitive."

"You have no active Access."

"Three percent."

"You know what I mean."

Sebastian opened the source trace. The cell returned nothing. He tried again. Nothing. For several seconds he only looked at Jace. Then he lowered the memory dampening.

82% -> 76%.

Jace frowned.

"Why?"

Sebastian closed the control panel.

"Diagnostic tolerance."

"Sure."

"If anyone asks, you were becoming unstable under excessive suppression."

"Was I?"

"No."

There it was. Small enough to deny later. Large enough to matter.

SUNCHAIN FACTION RESPONSE

Sebastian Sunchain:

Compliance Confidence: 100% -> 94%.

Personal Assessment of Recovery Fit:

OPTIMAL -> QUESTIONED.

Jace did not thank him. Sebastian did not ask. After he left, Jace lay back and found the scratch in the transport route again. This time the room did not erase it immediately.

ERROR MARK SIGNAL

Strength: 0.3%.

Destination:

SPIRE TRACE CONFIRMED.

The Safe Zone was somewhere on the other side. It was neither gone nor forgotten.

And Sunchain's cage had failed to make the connection disappear.
