Level 999: The Glitch King
Chapter 102: Sunchain Cage
Jace woke without pain. That scared him more than waking restrained would have. He lay beneath a white ceiling with both hands resting loose at his sides. No cuffs held him. No chain crossed his chest. The room contained a bed, a chair, a sink, and a door without a handle. His body felt warm. His thoughts felt clean. Too clean. A Status panel waited above him.
Jace tested the room before trusting the relief. He stood without asking. Allowed. He opened the sink. Allowed. He walked to the handleless door and pressed his palm to it. The door stayed shut without producing a denial. That detail bothered him. Sunchain had built a cage that did not need to say no because the architecture had already removed the choice.
He also checked the ceiling for cameras and found none visible. That did not reassure him. Sunchain preferred observation that felt like care.
The room passed every comfort test and failed every exit test. Water arrived. Temperature adjusted. The bed softened when his heart rate climbed. The door remained handleless. Jace could request a physician but not a hallway. The cage had been designed by people who understood that obvious cruelty made resistance easier.
That was what Sunchain kept forcing him to admit: a humane prison could still be a prison, and kindness inside it could still be real.
He checked his body next. Two old injuries were quieter. His right hand closed cleanly. Recovery had done real medical work while suppressing everything that made him object to the terms. Jace refused to flatten that into a simpler story. Sunchain had helped his body and endangered the person living in it.

Jace stared at Corruption. Twenty-six. His hands were not shaking. The black veins beneath his skin had faded almost completely. His right arm, which had spent days feeling half a fraction away from the rest of him, rested exactly where he expected it to. Relief came easily enough to scare him. The door opened without sound. Sebastian entered carrying a glass of water.

"No restraints," Jace said.
"You accepted lawful transport."
"Very trusting."
"You cannot access the functions that made restraints necessary."
"Less trusting."
Sebastian placed the glass within reach. Jace picked it up. His hand did not hurt. He drank. Even swallowing felt easier.
"What did you do to Corruption?"
"Reduced active instability."
"From ninety-seven to twenty-six."
"Yes."
"How?"
Sebastian opened the treatment record.
RECOVERY STABILIZATION
Active targets:
Body-integrity variance.
Bloodline agitation.
Memory conflict.
Emotional overload.
Claim pressure.
Identity contradiction.
Suppression methods:
Signal isolation.
Memory partition buffering.
Affective dampening.
Authority muting.
Charge extraction balancing.
Jace stopped at the third line.
"Memory partition."
"Temporary."
"What did you partition?"
"Nothing permanently."
That was not an answer. Jace thought of Manhattan. The Safe Zone came easily enough. Blue barrier. Broken buildings. People. Then he tried to picture Benjamin. The thought softened. Jace frowned. He knew the name.
Benjamin Ortiz. He knew there had been a gate. He knew Benjamin had died holding it. But the memory would not finish becoming an image. The room brightened.
MEMORY AGITATION DETECTED
Recovery Progress: 11% -> 12%.
Recommended action:
Disengage distressing memory.
Jace stared at the warning.
"Open the door."
Sebastian remained still.
"No."
"Good. Was worried this stopped being prison."
"It is medical containment."
"Door's still winning the argument."
Sebastian looked tired rather than angry.
"You arrived with five Health, ninety-seven percent Corruption, a fractured spatial profile, unresolved Crownline resonance, and an active title hostile to the governing System."
"And?"
"And twelve hours ago you were dying."
Jace looked back at his Health. Sixty-two. Sunchain had done in hours what he had failed to do for days. They had kept him alive. That fact refused to become convenient. Sebastian saw him read the number.
"We are not lying about everything."
"Never thought you were."
That answer caught him. Jace continued.
"Would be easier if you were."
The room pulsed softly. A second panel opened.
RECOVERY CAGE RESOURCE FLOW
Medical Charge supplied: 74.
Charge harvested from patient: 0.
Net facility cost: 74.
Projected stabilization time: 19:42:11.
Projected Health at completion: 420/420.
Projected Corruption at completion: 3%.
Projected Access: 0%.
Projected identity variance: <1%.
Jace looked at the final two lines.
"There."
Sebastian followed his gaze.
"Access suppression is necessary."
"Identity variance."
"Variance is what allows incompatible identity states to damage each other."
"Sounds like personality with a billing code."
Sebastian's expression hardened.
"It sounds different when you've watched someone tear themselves apart because three inherited memory structures all believed they were the original."
Jace said nothing. Sebastian had not spoken like an officer then. He had spoken like someone remembering a room. The recovery panel updated.
[HIDDEN QUEST]
INFILTRATE SUNCHAIN RECOVERY
Facility Entry: COMPLETE.
Identity Intact: 94%.
Recovery Progress: 12%.
Persistent Error Mark: SIGNAL LOST.
Objectives discovered:
Restore contact with hidden Error Mark.
Map recovery architecture.
Prevent identity finalization.
Find extraction route.
Jace closed it before Sebastian could see. Or tried to. His hand passed through empty air. His skills were sealed. His interface was mostly decorative. Sebastian turned toward the door.
"Rest."
"Not good at it."
"You will be."
Jace looked at him. Sebastian realized what he had said. A beat passed. Then he left. The door closed. Jace lay back. His body did not hurt. His Corruption was lower than it had been in weeks. His Health was climbing. The room was quiet.
He tried again to remember Benjamin's face. The thought began. The cell softened it.
MEMORY AGITATION DETECTED.
Thought intensity reduced.
Recovery Progress: 12% -> 13%.
Jace stopped trying. Relief spread through him immediately.
And that was when he knew the relief could not be trusted.
