Level 999: The Glitch King
Chapter 104: Error Mark Signal
The Error Mark was too weak to send a message. Jace used it to remember one. Keep the lights on. Liam's answer came back from memory. Come get them yourself. The room tried to smooth the exchange into factual recall. Jace held on to the annoyance in Liam's voice. That was the part Sunchain considered dangerous.
Practice had turned the accident into a method.
Jace repeated the Liam anchor until the response became measurable. The first attempt preserved the words but lost the tone. The second kept the tone and blurred Liam's face. On the third, Jace stopped trying to hold the whole memory and focused on the part that depended on another person's independent choice: Liam refusing to keep the shield forever. The signal strengthened.
The failed anchors became useful too. Times Square carried too much System noise. Vane survived only as threat information. Seraphina blurred because the Accord itself was under suppression. Liam's sentence stayed because it had been built around a boundary both men recognized. Jace finally had the beginning of a training rule instead of a lucky emotional breakthrough.
He tried Olivia next, remembering her disagreeing with him in front of half the Safe Zone. Her face held, but the exact words broke apart before he could finish the exchange. The signal rose by a fraction, then fell. Independent choice helped. Familiarity alone was not enough. Jace logged the failed anchor anyway. A bad result was still a boundary he could use.
Jace stopped treating the anchor as a sentimental trick. It had rules. Rules could be practiced.
Memory Anchor was beginning to show a rule of its own. Intensity did not help if the memory reduced another person to a symbol inside Jace's head. The signal held best when he remembered somebody who could refuse him, argue with him, or leave.
MEMORY AGITATION
Current: 27%.
Allowed: 18%.
Suppression response: ACTIVE.
Jace refused to release the memory.
Agitation: 27% -> 34%.
Corruption Load: 29% -> 32%.
Recovery Progress: 18% -> 21%.
The cell rewarded resistance by recovering him faster.
"Petty."
No one answered. The Error Mark pulsed.
Signal Strength: 0.3%.
He wrapped the memory around it. It was neither a claim nor a command, only a reference. A thing he had chosen to remember because another person had chosen to say it. The System hesitated.
[NEW RESISTANCE TRACK DETECTED]
SUPPRESSION RESISTANCE
Proficiency: 0% -> 6%.
Support the author by searching for the original publication of this novel.
Effect:
Preserve chosen cognitive content under external dampening.
Current efficiency: MINIMAL.
Then another line opened.
MEMORY ANCHOR
Status: INCOMPLETE.
Anchor requires:
Specific memory.
Independent external participant.
Emotional significance.
No ownership dependency.
Jace almost laughed. Apparently friendship had finally found a bureaucracy willing to acknowledge it. He chose Liam's sentence.
Come get them yourself.
MEMORY ANCHOR CREATED
Anchor: LIAM / SAFE ZONE HANDOFF.
Integrity: 11%.
Memory Anchor Proficiency: 0% -> 8%.
Error Mark Signal: 0.3% -> 0.6%.
The room noticed.
RECOVERY CORRECTION
Memory Dampening: 76% -> 89%.
Affective Dampening: 64% -> 78%.
Recovery Progress: 21% -> 25%.
Jace's memory of Liam blurred. He repeated the sentence internally. The words held. The feeling weakened. The meaning stayed. Good enough. The door opened. Sebastian entered fast enough to prove the cell had called him.
"What did you do?"
"Remembered somebody."
"I lowered suppression six percent."
"Appreciated."
"It increased itself thirteen."
"Less appreciated."
Sebastian opened the recovery log. His eyes moved down the entries. Memory Anchor. Suppression Resistance. Persistent external defect. Then he stopped at the Error Mark.
"You brought this here."
Jace looked at him. Sebastian's face gave him the answer. He had found it. Not the mark itself. The shape of the missing data around it.
"Transport metadata," Sebastian said.
Jace said nothing.
"You damaged the extraction seal before surrender."
Still nothing. Sebastian looked toward the door. He could call security. The cell offered the option for him.
REPORT CONTRABAND RULE DEFECT?
YES / NO.
Sebastian did not touch either.
"You planned this."
"Planned to not get erased."
"You entered a House recovery vessel carrying a rule fracture."
"Error Mark."
"That distinction will comfort the tribunal."
Jace watched him.
"Going to report it?"
Sebastian's eyes returned to the recovery numbers.
Health: 88/420.
Corruption: 32%.
Recovery Progress: 25%.
Then the suppressed memory logs.
Benjamin Ortiz.
Seraphina.
Noah Venn.
Liam Carter.
Each listed as agitation sources.
Each reduced when treatment succeeded.
Sebastian read the names. Something in his face changed.
"My mother underwent stabilization once."
Jace waited.
"Not full recovery. Temporary grief suppression after my father's first campaign."
Sebastian's voice had gone flat.
"She said it saved her life."
"Maybe it did."
Sebastian looked at him sharply. Jace shrugged.
"Didn't say it wasn't useful."
That made the argument harder. Sebastian stared at the list again.
"She stopped speaking about the people who died."
"Because it didn't hurt?"
"I thought so."
He closed the recovery log. The report option remained.
YES / NO.
Sebastian selected NO.
SUNCHAIN COMPLIANCE
Sebastian Sunchain: 94% -> 87%.
Unreported Recovery Irregularities: 1.
Jace looked at him.
"Diagnostic tolerance?"
"Shut up."
Sebastian restored the dampening to eighty-two instead of eighty-nine. The system objected.
RECOMMENDED SUPPRESSION: 89%.
MANUAL SETTING: 82%.
Recovery Efficiency: -4%.
Sebastian accepted.
Then he left.
Jace waited until the door sealed. The Error Mark still lived inside the transport record. Now that he knew how to follow it, the facility stopped being one white room. Each pulse reflected from authenticated systems it had crossed. Transport corridor. Processing gate. Recovery ward. Records junction. Charge conduit. He could not see a map.
He could see scars.
SUNCHAIN FACILITY TRACE
Map Fragments: 2/12.
Recovery Core: UNKNOWN.
Records Bay: ADJACENT NETWORK.
Persistent Error Mark: ACTIVE QUEST FUNCTION.
Suppression Resistance: 6% -> 14%.
Memory Anchor: 8% -> 17%.
Recovery Progress: 25% -> 28%.
No Attribute or Skill Points may be allocated while title functions remain muted. The hidden signal strengthened.
0.6% -> 0.9%.
Then something came back through it. What came back was neither Manhattan nor Liam, but a voice. Faint enough that Jace thought the cell had finally started putting people in his head.
"Apartment..."
He sat up. The signal vanished. Silence. Then the voice came through the wall to his left. Human. Close.
"Apartment 4B."
