The Imperial Dining Hall was smaller than Theo expected.

It was, Theo recognized, designed to lower defenses.

Emperor Valerian sat at the head with the easy posture of a man in his own home, which he was.

To his right: Empress Domitia, whose porcelain features carried a smile that did not reach her eyes.

To his left: an empty seat reserved for Aurelius, who had not yet arrived.

Duke Regulus occupied the position beyond the Empress.

"Welcome," the Emperor said, gesturing toward the opposite chairs. "No ceremony tonight. This is intended to be informal."

*Informal.* In a hall whose cutlery was forged from enchanted silver. Theo had grown up in a village where "informal" meant eating with your hands.

He took his seat. Liana settled beside him.

Seraphina was directed further down the table, next to Princess Calla, who studied the bespectacled girl with open curiosity.

The Pontifex settled into her chair, examined the wine selection, and poured herself a generous glass without waiting for the servants.

Empress Domitia’s gaze lingered on Seraphina for three seconds too long... then migrated to Liana, where it remained with the warmth of midwinter.

"The Reborn Empress," Domitia said, "Your reputation precedes you."

"As does yours, Your Imperial Majesty," Liana replied.

...

Aurelius arrived late.

He took his seat beside the Emperor without a word.

"Now then," Valerian said, lifting his wine. "To the Imperial Tournament’s champion."

"Sovereign," the Emperor continued, setting the crystal down. "I will be direct. The Imperial Court has observed your career with increasing interest. Your operations in the southern provinces... the establishment of the Abyssal Syndicate, the stabilization of three border territories have not gone unnoticed."

From down the table, the Pontifex’s eyebrow rose.

The Emperor reached into his robe and produced a jade medallion... circular, inscribed with a golden dragon.

"The position of Imperial Blade," Valerian said. "A direct operative of the Throne, answerable only to the Emperor. Autonomous authority across all forty-one provinces. Immunity from regional jurisdiction, including the Exarch Council’s oversight."

Silence...

Duke Regulus set his wine glass down with enough force to crack the stem. "Your Majesty. You cannot be serious."

"The position has been vacant for two hundred years," the Emperor continued, "It was established during the Third Dynasty for individuals whose capabilities exceeded the conventional hierarchy. The last holder was the Phantom General."

He placed the medallion on the table.

"I am offering you this, Sovereign. In exchange, the Crown receives your cooperation on matters of continental security... specifically, the escalating threat posed by the Cult of the Devourer. You retain your Syndicate, your weapons, and your personal associations."

Theo studied the artifact. Then the Emperor. Then the artifact again.

*Great Sage, analyze.*

[The Imperial Blade position grants: jurisdictional immunity across all provinces, direct Throne authority, independent operational mandate.]

[Constraints: the holder is bound to answer imperial summons during continental-level threats.]

[Assessment: benefits overwhelmingly outweigh obligations. However, acceptance permanently brands the host as the Emperor’s personal instrument, a mark that cannot be easily removed.]

"And if I refuse?" Theo asked.

"Then you leave the palace tonight as the Tournament champion and nothing more."

"Duke Regulus will file formal grievances with the Martial Court. The investigation into the Abyssal Hammer’s provenance will proceed unimpeded. And the question of the Genesis Sphere’s custody will be escalated to the Exarch Council, where the Duke holds considerable sway."

Translation: *Accept my shield, or face the Duke alone.*

Aurelius, who had been rigid throughout, finally spoke.

"Father."

"You are rewarding the man who humiliated the Crown’s heir before the entire Capital."

"I am recognizing exceptional talent," Valerian corrected mildly. "As I would expect you to, when you sit where I sit."

Aurelius’s eyes locked onto Theo across the table.

"If you accept this position," the Prince said quietly, "understand that it changes nothing between us. A medallion does not erase what happened today. When we meet again I will surpass you. In every domain. By every measure. The Sovereign Dominion was my weakest technique. You caught me unprepared. That will not happen twice."

Theo met his gaze evenly.

"I’m counting on it."

Theo picked up the medallion.

"I accept," he said.

Emperor Valerian smiled. It was the first genuine smile Theo had seen from the man all evening—

And it was, somehow, more unsettling than any of Duke Regulus’s threats...

"Excellent. Now—" he gestured to the waiting servants. "Shall we eat? The lamb is getting cold."

...

The dinner lasted three hours. By imperial standards, it was surprisingly uneventful.

Valerian asked thoughtful questions about the southern provinces. His questions were precise, informed, and revealed a depth of existing knowledge that suggested the Emperor had been studying Theo long before the tournament.

The Pontifex consumed four glasses of wine and told an anecdote about the Second Dynasty’s founding Empress that made Valerian laugh aloud and Domitia blanch.

Elder Tiberius, who had been invited as a courtesy, spent the entire meal unable to stop staring at the palace’s forge-work, muttering about techniques he had only read about in theoretical texts.

Seraphina survived a full conversation with Princess Calla without tripping, falling, or igniting a war... though she did accidentally knock over a salt cellar, which Calla found endearing rather than offensive.

By dessert, the two were whispering and giggling like schoolgirls, which drew a poisonous glance from Empress Domitia that neither noticed.

Liana spoke precisely twelve sentences the entire evening...

Aurelius ate in silence. He did not look at Theo again. But when the evening concluded and the guests rose to leave, the Crown Prince paused at the dining hall’s entrance.

Without turning, he spoke over his shoulder... not to Theo, but to Liana.

"Reborn Empress. Your semifinal against Lord Commander Draven was postponed by the Reckoning’s disruption. It has been rescheduled for tomorrow."

Liana’s expression did not change.

"Win," Aurelius said. "I want the final to mean something."

Then he was gone.

...

In the carriage back to the Academy, Theo leaned against the interior and turned the medallion over in his fingers.

The Imperial Blade. A title, a shield, and a leash... all forged into a single piece of enchanted jade.

"You know he is using you," Liana said quietly, "The Emperor did not offer that position out of generosity. He needs the Cult eliminated, and you are the only one with both the intelligence network and the personal combat power to do it."

"I know."

"And the medallion binds you to respond when he calls. You have traded operational freedom for protection."

"I know that too."

"Then why did you accept?"

Theo considered the question. Then he slipped the medallion into his pocket and reached across the carriage bench to take Liana’s hand.

"Because the alternative was letting Duke Regulus take you away from me under the pretense of national security."

Liana’s fingers tightened around his. She did not pull away.

Behind them, in a separate carriage, the Pontifex was already asleep. Seraphina sat beside her, wide-eyed, composing a letter to nobody in particular about everything that had just happened.

*Dear Diary,* the letter began. *Today I dined with the Emperor. My secret identity remained secret. I only broke one salt cellar. Theo won the entire tournament by being ridiculous, and Liana looked like she wanted to incinerate the Empress with her eyes alone.*

*Also, I think Princess Calla wants to be friends.*

*Today was a good day.*
