Investing in the Reborn Empress, Rewarded With 10x Returns
Chapter 148: Cripple
The evening after the Imperial Tournament, beneath the Solstice Manor...
Theo stood at the center of the Abyssal World-Forge — his inner pocket dimension — where the sky burned with perpetual twilight and the landscape stretched into endless mountains.
Seraphina stood a respectful ten paces behind him, wearing her training robes.
A familiar chime echoed in Theo’s mind.
[Milestone Reached: Secret Disciple’s Vanguard Ascension.]
[Rewards generated: Champion’s Cache x1, Disciple Initiation Cache x1.]
[System permissions expanded.]
Theo did not hesitate. *Open both.*
[Champion’s Cache opened.]
[Obtained: Terminus Scepter (Primeval-grade artifact), Seed of the Astral Enlightenment Tree, 1000 Syndicate Merit Points.]
[Disciple Initiation Cache opened.]
[Obtained: Mythic Aether-Marrow Elixir, Abyssal Wyrm-Sovereign Codex, 1000 Syndicate Merit Points.]
Theo felt a surge of genuine elation. A Primeval-grade artifact? An Enlightenment Tree? Just these two items were enough to tip the continental power balance!
He extended his hand. The Terminus Scepter materialized... an obsidian rod etched with glowing, ancient star-charts.
Theo gave it an effortless, one-handed swing.
Two arcs of concentrated void-energy tore from the scepter’s tip.
*Boom—*
A mountain peak twenty miles away ceased to exist. It did not crumble; it was simply erased, leaving a smooth, smoking crater in its wake.
"By the Gods..."
Seraphina broke into a cold sweat. She stared at the missing mountain, then at the man holding the scepter.
What cultivation tier was her master truly hiding?
An Exarch would need half a day of preparation to level a peak that cleanly, yet the Sovereign had done it with a lazy flick of his wrist.
*I am so glad I became his student instead of his enemy,* she thought, wiping her brow.
"Not bad," Theo murmured, examining the scepter. "But it has a catch."
He shook his head with a quiet sigh. *Great Sage* had already analyzed the weapon.
Its Primeval output was linked to the boundaries of his Abyssal World-Forge. Within his inner world, or within the established territory of the Abyssal Syndicate’s headquarters, it functioned at full capacity. Outside those borders, its power would scale down drastically to match his own cultivation tier.
*I suppose I will just have to lure all my enemies back to the Manor,* he thought. *Or snipe them from the balcony.*
But Seraphina heard the sigh and misinterpreted it entirely.
*He erased a mountain... and he is disappointed?!* Her mind raced.
The scepter had to be a divine relic, perhaps something passed down from the Age of Primevals.
And he found its performance lackluster? Just how old was her master, really?
Was he a reincarnated deity using youth-preserving arts?
Theo stored the scepter and pulled the Mythic Aether-Marrow Elixir from his inventory.
"What manner of vessel is that?" Seraphina gasped.
The jade bottle itself radiated an Aether-signature that rivaled the Crown Prince’s personal armory.
But when Theo popped the cork, a wave of medicinal fragrance flooded the World-Forge.
Just breathing it in made Seraphina’s spiritual meridians thrum with the urge to break through to the next realm.
Theo tilted the bottle, popped a pill into his mouth, and chewed it like a roasted nut.
"Crunch, crunch... Tastes like mint," he observed.
He checked his internal state. Nothing...
The *Diamond Crucible Form* and his Parasite were already so refined that the elixir simply dissolved without effect.
"Shame. Here, catch."
He carelessly tossed the priceless jade bottle over his shoulder.
Seraphina scrambled forward, diving to catch the bottle before it could hit the floor. She cradled it against her chest like an infant, her heart hammering against her ribs.
"Master! This is too precious... I cannot possibly accept..."
"Relax, it is just a marrow-cleansing supplement," Theo laughed. "Since you are officially my disciple, consider it a signing bonus."
Before she could formulate another protest, a black tome bound in Drake-leather landed on top of the jade bottle in her arms.
"The *Abyssal Wyrm-Sovereign Codex*," Theo said. "Your current Imperial Vanguard arts are too rigid. This suits your Wyrm-Severing affinity perfectly. Study it."
Seraphina opened her mouth to decline but her eyes fell on the first page of the manuscript.
The Aether theories described within were so perfectly aligned with her own bottlenecks that she could not look away.
It was as if the book had been written specifically for her soul.
"I... thank you, Master!" She bowed deeply, then immediately sat cross-legged on the floor, opening the book with trembling fingers.
While she read, Theo opened his system interface to review her updated metrics.
[Disciple: Seraphina (Secret Identity: Princess of the Eternal Empire)]
[Lineage: Imperial Bloodline / Ashford Heritage]
[Special Physique: Innate Siren’s Grace]
[Cultivation Art: Imperial Vanguard Arts (Transitioning to Abyssal Wyrm-Sovereign Codex)]
[Talent: Supreme]
[Cultivation Tier: Fourth Realm]
Theo blinked at the readout. *Innate Siren’s Grace?*
He checked the detailed description. *A rare genetic convergence granting the host an overwhelming, passive magnetism. Enhances persuasive authority and generates intense subconscious attraction in the opposite sex.*
Well, that explained why half the young nobles in the Capital were constantly tripping over their own boots when she walked past.
A natural allure, amplified by her Imperial bloodline.
Seraphina finished the introductory Chapter and exhaled a long breath, she looked up. Her gaze met Theo’s.
For a moment, the silence in the World-Forge stretched out.
Seraphina’s cheeks flushed crimson.
"Master," she stammered, clutching the book against her chest. "You..."
***
Three weeks later. The Eastern Marches.
Theo’s Shadow-Clone stood at the edge of the destruction, tossing a pouch of high-grade Aether-crystals and three spatial rings into the air.
He flashed a mildly embarrassed smile at the four Exarch-level observers standing twenty paces away.
"I must say, gentlemen, your generosity is overwhelming," Theo said, his tone amiable.
The three Provincial Archons and the ragged old ascetic stared at him.
The corners of their mouths twitched. Overwhelming generosity?
They had just watched the Sovereign’s clone erase an entire corrupt noble house in three minutes.
When he had turned his gaze on them, they had thrown their spatial rings at him as "apology fees" for simply breathing the same air.
"S-Sovereign," one of the Archons stammered, "Are we... permitted to withdraw?"
Theo looked mildly offended. "What kind of question is that? Your legs are still attached, are they not? I am the Imperial Blade, not a prison warden. If you wish to leave, just leave."
The three Archons did not need to be told twice.
Bowing so deeply they nearly snapped their spines, they turned and fled with an urgency usually reserved for natural disasters.
The ascetic, however, lingered. He leaned on a driftwood staff and chuckled.
"In that case, I shall also take my leave, Sovereign," the ascetic said, offering a bow. "If the Imperial Blade ever finds himself in the Central Provinces, this old cripple would be honored to serve as your guide."
He turned and walked away in the opposite direction, his footsteps leaving no imprint on the ash.
Theo watched him go, narrowing his eyes. *Great Sage* had already scanned the old man.
Despite the ragged appearance, the ascetic possessed a fragmented Aether-signature that matched Primeval-era cultivation arts.
Very similar to the Pontifex, though incomplete...
*The Central Provinces,* Theo mused. *Perhaps the Syndicate needs a branch there.*
"Boss!"
Cassia, the sixteen-year-old Syndicate operative, bounded over the rubble.
Her curly red hair bounced with each step, and she was dragging a sack nearly as large as herself.
Seraphina followed close behind, adjusting her spectacles and looking significantly more composed.
"The Rullus vaults are clean!" Cassia beamed, dropping the sack. "I even stripped the gold leaf off their dining chairs. Take a look!"
She proudly handed Theo a spatial ring containing the primary haul, waiting for praise like a hound that had just fetched a particularly large bone.
"Not bad," Theo laughed. He transferred the bulk of the treasury into the Syndicate’s shared network, but deliberately left several thousand Imperial Drakes’ worth of spirit-stones in the ring before tossing it back to her. "Operating expenses. Buy yourself something nice."
Cassia caught the ring, her eyes shining. "The Boss is the greatest!"
Seraphina stepped forward, offering her own spatial ring with both hands. She blinked expectantly.
Theo cleared his throat. "Flawless execution of the Wyrm-Severing Arts. Well done." He took the ring, processed the contents, and returned it with a similar operating stipend.
Seraphina smiled, tucking the ring into her sash with pride.
Theo turned his attention to the two remaining figures in the courtyard: Elder Vane and Elder Caelum of the Ashford Sword Sanctum’s eastern branch.
They had been observing the Syndicate’s "humanitarian intervention" and were currently standing as still as statues.
"The corruption in House Rullus has been resolved," Theo said, dusting his hands. "My main body must return to the Capital. My operatives will remain in the Eastern Marches to stabilize the territory. I trust the Ashford Sanctum will extend them every courtesy?"
"Of course, Sovereign!" Elder Vane replied.
"Excellent." Theo smiled. "Why are you sweating, Elder Vane? The weather is quite pleasant. Do not worry... the Syndicate is a purely philanthropic organization. I am very reasonable."
Elder Vane nodded with excessive enthusiasm. *Reasonable.*
The Sovereign had just dropped a Primeval hammer-strike that turned a six-hundred-year-old noble estate into a geographical anomaly, and he was calling himself reasonable...
Theo felt his Shadow-Clone’s Aether reserves depleting. It was time to disperse.
He looked at his senior disciple.
"Oh, and Seraphina?"
"Yes, Master?"
"Next time you encounter an ambush, just infuse the clone-hair with standard Aether." Theo’s expression was deadpan. "Do not use the *Celestial Harmony Pressure Technique* as an ignition switch. It is distracting for the main body."
Seraphina’s face turned the exact shade of a ripe tomato.
During the ambush, her standard Aether reserves had been sealed by a Rullus formation.
Panicking, she had used the only technique she could still channel to the clone-hair.
"I... I will remember, Master," she squeaked, wishing the crater would open up and swallow her. "It will not happen again."
Theo nodded. "Good work, both of you."
