[Target: Crown Prince Aurelius — Imperial Vanguard Rank #1]

[Action: Host defeated the top-ranked combatant of the Imperial Tournament in both physical combat and spiritual reckoning. First individual in recorded history to overcome the Imperial Sovereign Dominion.]

[Return: Imperial Resonance Fragment — Passive Ability]

[Description: Grants the host the ability to detect Imperial Mandate-type attacks before they manifest, reducing their effectiveness by 30%. Additionally, the host now possesses a partial blueprint of the Seal of Eight Dominions.]

Theo read the notification.

Read it again...

Then carefully closed the system window and scrubbed every trace of surprise from his face.

A partial blueprint of the Crown Prince’s signature formation.

Handed to him as a *passive reward* simply for standing inside the Sovereign Dominion long enough for the Great Sage to run its scanners.

If anyone in the Imperial Court discovered this, the word "treason" would be the kindest thing said before the execution order was signed.

Theo pocketed the information like a man carefully concealing a live explosive and walked toward the Academy section.

He did not get far.

"Sovereign."

Duke Regulus’s voice struck him from behind like a thrown lance. The Exarch had descended from the observation deck with Aurelius on one arm and murder in both eyes.

Theo stopped. Turned.

The Duke released Aurelius and stepped forward until his Aether-Storm prickled the hairs on Theo’s forearms.

"The tournament victory is yours. The Crown will acknowledge it publicly. But the Spiritual Reckoning was an unnecessary humiliation that the Imperial Court will not forget."

"His Highness invoked Article Fourteen," Theo replied evenly. "I accepted."

"And in doing so, you exposed the Imperial lineage’s Sovereign Dominion to foreign spiritual contact for the first time in three thousand years." The Duke’s eyes bored into him. "you will decline any future challenges, public or private, from members of the Imperial family. You will restrict your Syndicate operations to the southern provinces. You will cease all territorial expansion. And you will surrender the Abyssal Hammer to the Imperial Armory for inspection and classification."

Theo raised an eyebrow. "Is that all?"

"Your Grace," Theo said, "I have a counter-offer."

"You are not in a position to—"

"No."

"No, I will not restrict the Syndicate. No, I will not hand over my hammer." ℯℯ𝑙.

Duke Regulus’s battle-aura spiked. The stone beneath their feet hairlined. Then a hand landed on the Duke’s shoulder.

"Perhaps," said a voice that made every person within earshot straighten their spine, "this conversation would benefit from a change of venue."

Emperor Valerian stood behind Duke Regulus.

"The Sovereign has won the Imperial Tournament," Valerian said mildly, as if commenting on the weather. "Custom dictates that the victor dine with the Imperial family this evening. Regulus, see that arrangements are made."

"Your Majesty—" the Duke began.

"Arrangements, Regulus."

The Duke’s jaw clenched. Then he bowed and stepped back.

The Emperor turned to Theo. Up close, the resemblance to Aurelius was striking but where Aurelius’s eyes burned with fire, the Emperor’s held the patient stillness of deep water.

The gaze of a man who had ruled for forty years by understanding people better than they understood themselves.

"You have given this old man much to think about today," Valerian said quietly. "I look forward to our conversation tonight."

He paused.

"Much to think about indeed," the Emperor murmured.

Then he was gone. As silently as he had arrived.

Theo stood alone on the arena floor.

The crowd’s roar washed over him in waves. Confetti drifted from the upper galleries. Somewhere in the stands, a drunk man was sobbing about having bet his house on Aurelius...

*Great Sage.*

[Standing by.]

*What just happened?*

[Emperor Valerian has personally intervened to neutralize Duke Regulus’s escalation. The dinner invitation serves dual strategic purposes. First, it legitimizes the host’s tournament victory as Crown-sanctioned, preventing Regulus from retaliating through unofficial channels. Second, it positions the Emperor as the sole mediating authority, removing the Duke from negotiations entirely.]

*And Valerian’s actual motives?*

[The Emperor’s intervention directly contradicts the Duke’s demands, suggesting a divergence of objectives between the Throne and its Exarch protector. Valerian may be pursuing an entirely separate agenda. Recommend heightened caution.]

One dinner with the Emperor of the Eternal Empire. The man who controlled the largest military force on the continent, commanded the personal loyalty of seven Exarch-level officials, and had once bisected a mountain range during a border disagreement.

And Theo was going to sit across from him and eat lamb...

"Brilliant," he muttered, scratching his neck. "What could possibly go wrong?"

...

From the Academy section, Liana watched the Emperor depart.

*A dinner invitation,* she thought. *But why? What does the Emperor want that the Duke does not?*

She stood. Smoothed her robes. And walked toward the arena.

If Theo was dining with the Emperor tonight, he was not doing it alone...

Behind her, Seraphina scrambled to keep up.

"Wait—we are going to the *palace*?! Tonight?! Do I need to change?! What does one wear to dinner with the Emperor?! Do I bow or curtsy?! Is there a difference?! Does the Pontifex know?!"

The Pontifex, still seated in the observation deck, watched with a knowing smile.

She drained the last of her Lucid Dream Blend, tucked the jade pot into her sleeve, and rose.

"Well," she said to no one in particular. "I suppose I should also find something presentable."

She paused, brushing dust from her cloak.

"I believe I still own a formal robe. Somewhere. It may require some... excavation."

She glanced one final time at the empty arena. Then she descended the stairs to catch up with the others...

---

"I am going to trip," Seraphina whispered. "I am going to trip on this dress, crash into a pillar, knock over the Emperor’s table, and start a war."

"You will not trip," Liana said without turning. "Walk with your spine straight and your chin level. You are the daughter of Consort Livia. This palace is as much your inheritance as anyone’s."

Seraphina’s eyes widened behind her spectacles. For a heartbeat, in the corridor light, she looked startlingly like her mother.

The Pontifex trailed behind them in a formal robe that had last been fashionable during the Second Dynasty. She wore it with supreme confidence.

"Pontifex," Headmaster Lucius murmured from beside her, "that robe predates the current palace by four thousand years."

"Yes," she agreed pleasantly. "It was quite popular at the time..."

"The neckline alone would cause a diplomatic incident."

"Then diplomacy has grown very tedious."
