Investing In My Crippled Wife: My SS Rank Talent Gets Unsealed
Chapter 7: Pain
Chapter 7: Chapter 7: Pain
Jason woke to sunlight on his face and a dull, persistent ache running through his thigh, the kind of pain that had settled in overnight and made itself comfortable.
He blinked at the ceiling for a moment, disoriented, before the events of the previous night came flooding back all at once. The broken window. The wolf-thing. Novaria’s seizure. The system.
’Right,’ he thought, sitting up slowly, testing the leg. The bleeding had stopped at some point, the wound already scabbed over at some point while he was asleep. It wasn’t a particularly deep slash after all
He was on the bed.
Novaria was beside him.
’Oh,’ he thought, and felt heat crawl up the back of his neck before he could stop it, some old, entirely useless instinct kicking in despite everything they’d been through together in the last twelve hours.
He must have collapsed onto the mattress at some point after administering the injection, too exhausted to make it back to his blanket on the floor, and neither of them had apparently noticed or cared enough in the moment to correct it.
He glanced over at her, already halfway into an apology he hadn’t decided the wording of yet, and stopped.
She was still asleep. Deeply, thoroughly asleep, not unexpected from a body that had been pushed somewhere it shouldn’t have been pushed and needed real time to recover.
Her face, for once, wasn’t arranged into the careful, composed expression she seemed to wear like armor during her waking hours. She just looked tired. Young, even, in a way she generally didn’t let herself look in front of him.
’Let her sleep,’ he thought, and eased himself off the bed as carefully as his leg allowed, wincing at the movement but managing not to make enough noise to wake her.
He crossed the room, glanced back once to confirm she was still breathing steady and even, and slipped out into the hallway.
He’d barely crossed the threshold when the system reappeared.
[System check complete.]
[Host action assessed: prioritized partner’s safety over personal survival during hostile engagement. Sustained injury while protecting partner. Administered emergency medical intervention without hesitation.]
[System integration threshold: met.]
Jason paused in the hallway, one hand still braced against the doorframe.
’Integration threshold,’ he thought. ’Meaning what, exactly.’
[Host has demonstrated genuine willingness to care for designated partner. This is the qualifying condition for full system integration.]
[Rewards unlocked:]
[1. Extreme Marrow Cleansing Procedure]
[2. Bloodline Fragment: Azure Dragon]
[3. Cultivation Manual: Heretical God Law]
Jason stared at the three lines for a long moment, something complicated moving through his chest, equal parts disbelief and the low, familiar hum of curiosity that had never really left him even during the worst of the last sixteen years.
’Because I decided to take care of her,’ he thought, turning the logic of it over slowly, the way he turned over most things that interested him. ’Not because of some cosmic destiny. Not because I’m secretly special. Because I chose to bleed for someone instead of walking away.’
He didn’t hate that, actually. If there had to be a reason the universe had decided to hand him something like this, that one was at least a reason he could live with.
[Would you like to receive rewards now?]
He glanced back toward the closed bedroom door, weighed the wisdom of doing whatever came next somewhere that wasn’t directly beside his sleeping wife, and made his way instead toward the bathroom at the end of the hall, limping slightly on the injured leg.
’Yes,’ he thought, once the door was shut behind him.
The pain arrived before he’d finished forming the thought.
It started in his bones, a sensation he had no good frame of reference for, nothing in his memory that matched it cleanly. It felt, if he had to describe it later, like something impossibly thin and impossibly sharp was trying to work its way out of him from the inside, thousands of needle-points pressing simultaneously against every bone in his body, testing for weakness, finding it, pushing through.
He clenched his jaw hard enough that his teeth ached and gripped the edge of the sink with both hands, knuckles white, and did not make a sound, because some stubborn, useless part of him refused to give the pain that satisfaction even with no one there to hear it.
[Marrow Cleansing Procedure: initiated.]
The sensation built, needle after needle after needle, a wave of them radiating outward from his spine, down through his ribs, into his arms, his legs, his skull, and just as he thought he’d found some kind of equilibrium with it, the second sensation arrived on top of the first.
