Investing In My Crippled Wife: My SS Rank Talent Gets Unsealed
Chapter 8: Conceal
Chapter 8: Chapter 8: Conceal
Heat.
Not the ordinary kind. Not sunburn, not fever, not anything he had a real comparison for. It felt like something was pouring molten and heavy directly into his veins, spreading outward from his chest in slow, deliberate pulses, each one hotter than the last, a fire that didn’t burn so much as it saturated, filling every inch of him until he couldn’t tell anymore where the needles ended and the heat began.
[Bloodline Integration: Azure Dragon. Initiated.]
’That’s,’ he thought, distantly, through gritted teeth, ’that’s a lot at once.’
He didn’t get much further than that before the third sensation arrived, different from the first two, less physical and more like pressure directly against the inside of his skull, information pouring into him faster than his mind could organize it, forms and stances and breathing patterns and Essence-channeling sequences all arriving at once in a flood he had no ability to slow down or control, a headache building behind his eyes that felt like it might actually split his skull open from the inside.
[Cultivation Manual: Heretical God Law. Transmission in progress.]
He didn’t know how long it lasted. Time had stopped meaning very much somewhere in the middle of it, the needles and the fire and the flood of information blurring together into one continuous, overwhelming wave that he simply had to endure, gripping the sink, breathing through clenched teeth, refusing to fall.
And then, all at once, it stopped.
Jason sagged forward over the sink, breathing hard, sweat soaking through what was left of his shirt, and looked down at his own hands.
They were coated in something black.
He blinked, and looked closer, and realized it wasn’t just his hands. It was everywhere, a thick, sticky, tar-like residue seeping out from his pores, coating his arms, his chest, dripping slowly down into the sink basin in dark, viscous threads.
’Impurities,’ he thought, distant recognition surfacing slowly through the fog of exhaustion. ’From the marrow cleansing. It’s pulling something out of me.’
He should have been more alarmed by that than he was. He filed the thought away regardless, some clinical part of his brain already cataloguing it for later, and reached for the tap, running the water hot, beginning the slow work of scrubbing the grime from his skin.
He was halfway through rinsing his arms clean when he felt it.
Mana.
Not a memory of mana, not the ghost of a sensation he used to have and had spent sixteen years trying to convince himself he could still almost remember.
Actual, present, undeniable mana, humming faintly in the air around him, in the water running over his hands, in the walls and the floor and every ordinary inch of the world he’d spent sixteen years being told he was permanently cut off from.
Jason went very still, water still running over his hands, and felt something in his chest seize up entirely.
’That’s,’ he thought, and couldn’t finish the sentence, because the sentence didn’t have an ending that felt real yet.
[Marrow Cleansing Procedure: complete.]
[Seal status: dissolved.]
[Host has regained the ability to sense and cultivate ambient Mana.]
[Congratulations. Sixteen-year seal successfully removed.]
He read the words twice, then a third time, and felt the grime still clinging to half his body become, quite suddenly, the least important thing in the room.
’I can feel it,’ he thought, and the thought arrived shaking, unsteady, nothing like the calm, measured internal voice he usually kept even in a crisis. ’I can actually feel it.’
He closed his eyes and reached, tentative, uncertain, half-convinced he’d imagine the whole thing collapsing the moment he tried too hard, and felt his Soul Core respond, faint and rusty and entirely, gloriously real, sixteen years of silence breaking all at once into something that finally, finally answered back.
He almost didn’t believe it, even then, even with the system’s words still hanging in front of him. If he hadn’t been able to feel it himself, directly, undeniably, in the one place no healer, no clan elder, no false diagnosis had ever been able to reach, he might have written the whole thing off as some elaborate, cruel dream.
But he could feel it. And that made it real.
Jason stood there in the bathroom, half-covered in black residue, water running cold now over hands that had finally, after sixteen years, remembered what it felt like to hold power again, and let himself think, clearly and completely, the one thought that mattered more than any of the others crowding his head.
’Whatever this is,’ he thought, looking toward the closed door beyond which Novaria still slept, unaware of everything that had just changed on the other side of the wall, ’I’m going to use it for us. Whatever life I build with this, she gets the best version of it. I promised I’d take care of her. Now I actually can.’
He finished cleaning himself off slowly, methodically, the grime coming away in the water in long dark ribbons, and once he was done, once the last of the residue had swirled down the drain, he pulled up the system window again, more out of habit now than urgency, curious what else had changed.
[Host status:]
[Fire Affinity: SS-Rank. Unsealed.]
[Lightning Affinity: SS-Rank. Unsealed.]
Jason blinked at that. ’SS,’ he thought. ’Not S. The bloodline must have pushed it higher.’
[Perception Talent: Evolved.]
[New ability unlocked: Veil. Suppresses outward mana fluctuations, rendering host’s cultivation level undetectable to external sensing.]
He stared at that particular line for a long moment, something slow and sharp and entirely new beginning to take shape behind his eyes, the first real strategic thought his restored mind had produced since waking up that morning.
’Nobody has to know,’ he thought, and felt the ghost of a smile tug at the corner of his mouth despite everything his body had just been through. Not until I decide it’s time.’
