Investing In My Crippled Wife: My SS Rank Talent Gets Unsealed
Chapter 6: Sealed Core
Chapter 6: Chapter 6: Sealed Core
They weren’t written on anything. They weren’t spoken by anyone. They simply arrived, printed across the inside of his vision like something had reached directly into the space behind his eyes and placed them there.
[Host detected.]
[Analyzing...]
[External diagnosis: Talent destruction.]
[System diagnosis: Incomplete.]
Jason went very still.
[Soul Core: Sealed.]
[Original attributes detected.]
[Fire Affinity: S]
[Lightning Affinity: S]
[Perception Talent: D]
He stared at the words, or stared at whatever it was he was actually staring at, his exhausted mind struggling to process them even as his hand remained locked around Novaria’s, even as the pain in his leg pulsed in time with his heartbeat.
’That’s not,’ he thought, distantly, somewhere underneath the ringing in his skull, ’that’s not what sixteen years of healers told me.’
The last thing he registered, right before exhaustion nearly, almost, mercifully dragged him under, was a single new line appearing beneath the rest.
[Would you like to begin diagnostics?]
Jason’s answer came before he’d fully decided he was going to give one, some part of him too curious, too stubborn, too worn down by sixteen years of not knowing to say no to an answer even at the cost of whatever sleep he had left in him.
’Yes,’ he thought, more out of instinct than deliberation.
The system didn’t hesitate.
[Diagnostics initiated.]
[Phase One: Verifying Soul Core status...]
The words hung there for a long moment, and then, beneath them, something that looked almost like an image began to resolve, faint and ghostly, superimposed over the dark ceiling of the bedroom.
A shape he didn’t immediately recognize as anything until it clicked, all at once, that he was looking at his own Soul Core, or a rendering of it, rough and simplified, the way a diagram in a medical textbook might simplify something too complex to draw properly.
[Comparing against archived medical scans, Mordania Central Healing Registry, sixteen-year record...]
[Discrepancy detected.]
Jason’s breath caught.
[Archived diagnosis: catastrophic destruction of Soul Core function. Consistent with total and permanent talent loss.]
[System finding: Soul Core intact. Access pathway obstructed by a dense scar barrier, consistent with extreme cultivation-collapse trauma. Barrier density far exceeds standard classification thresholds.]
’Extreme,’ he thought, and the word landed somewhere cold in his chest all the same. ’Not gone. Buried under something the healers weren’t equipped to measure.’
[Standard Gate-accident seals are shallow. Partial. Recoverable through conventional healing within months.]
[This barrier is unusually deep, formed by the sheer force of the original explosion acting on an unstable, still-developing Soul Core. Consistent with catastrophic accidental trauma at a critically early cultivation stage.]
[Conclusion: this is not talent destruction. This is the deepest recorded case of accidental sealing on file.]
He lay there in the dark, Novaria’s hand still loosely curled in his, the dead wolf-thing still cooling a few feet away, and felt something in him that had gone quiet sixteen years ago sit up and start paying attention again.
[Phase Two: Cataloguing dormant attributes...]
The ceiling-image shifted, the rough sketch of his Soul Core giving way to a cleaner readout, text scrolling past almost too fast to follow before settling into something legible.
[Fire Affinity: S-Rank. Dormant. Full potential intact behind barrier.]
[Lightning Affinity: S-Rank. Dormant. Full potential intact behind barrier.]
[Perception Talent: D-Rank at time of sealing.]
[Note: Perception-type talents typically scale non-linearly with cultivation depth. Current rank reflects an unawakened baseline, not a ceiling.]
Jason turned that last line over slowly, the analytical part of his mind, the part that had never fully stopped working even through six years of everyone telling him there was nothing left to analyze, latching onto it immediately.
’Non-linearly,’ he thought. ’Everyone always told me the Perception talent was the weak one. The afterthought. Nobody ever mentioned that it doesn’t scale like the others.’
[Phase Three: Estimating recovery difficulty...]
[Barrier depth calculated at severity level rarely seen outside catastrophic loss cases.]
[Explanation: an eight-year-old Soul Core, freshly formed and still stabilizing, subjected to an explosive Essence discharge of that magnitude, would be expected to seal this deeply. The scale of the barrier is proportional to the scale of the accident, not evidence of any external interference.]
[No anomalous signatures detected. No indication of deliberate tampering.]
’So it really was just me,’ he thought, and something in that landed heavier than he expected, an old argument with himself he’d apparently never fully put down. ’No one else to blame. Just an eight year-old who thought he was ready.’
[Phase Four: Proposed pathway.]
[A cultivation technique compatible with dual S-Rank attribute refinement has been identified within system archives.]
[Technique name: Heretical God Law.]
[Warning: this technique is classified as high-risk. Simultaneous refinement of incompatible high-grade attributes carries significant strain on an unprepared Soul Core. Essence consumption during early cultivation will be severe. Host’s current physical and Essence reserves are insufficient to safely begin without risk of relapse into a deeper, potentially permanent seal.]
[Recommendation: stabilize host condition before initiating technique.]
[Diagnostics complete.]
The words hung there a moment longer, and then, one by one, began to fade, until only a single line remained, patient, waiting.
[Would you like to proceed?]
Jason lay there in the dark, blood dried stiff against his thigh, his wife’s hand still loosely wrapped around his own, six years of quiet, humiliating certainty cracking open all at once into something that felt dangerously close to hope.
’Sixteen years,’ he thought, and even now, even exhausted past the point of trusting his own judgment, he could feel the corner of his mouth pulling into something that wasn’t quite a smile yet, but was getting there.
He answered before the thought had even finished forming.
’Yes.’
The last thing he saw before sleep finally took him under was a single line of text, calm and unbothered, utterly indifferent to the fact that it had just rewritten the entire shape of his life.
[Acknowledged. Stabilization protocol will begin once host is conscious and safe. Rest now.]
