Chapter 49: Chapter 49 | Mira Loves Porridge
The crawler swept right. Missed him by less than he was comfortable with.
He circled. Found the junction node between its limb segments — the same weak point architecture Han Dori had briefed. Two Gale Strike hits. The rotation landed clean both times. The crawler went down on the second.
Second monster was smarter. It had been waiting.
It came from behind while he was watching the first one go down.
He felt it at three meters too close, the Nerve Sense catching the dungeon tissue displacement of something moving fast through an organic passage.
He threw himself forward.
The strike caught his shoulder. Glancing. The protective layer held most of it but his arm rang with the impact and he came up into a roll and came up on his feet and turned.
The monster was already repositioning. Faster than the crawler. More aware.
’It watched me take down the first one,’ he thought. ’It adjusted.’
He didn’t let it adjust twice.
Three hits. Two to junction nodes, one to the central mass when it overextended. It dropped.
He pressed his palm to the organic floor.
Nothing else in range.
He found two more junction nodes deeper in the passage and hit them both. The dungeon’s pulse slowed noticeably. Like something settling.
He touched the comms device.
"Two monsters down. Two more junction nodes neutralized. Shoulder impact on the second engagement protective layer held, no injury. Ready for extraction."
Han Dori’s voice: "Come out."
====
Outside, Han Dori did the shoulder check first.
No bruising. The layer had done its job.
"Second monster adjusted its approach after watching me take down the first," Kai said. "It waited."
Han Dori made a note. "Living dungeons do that. The monsters share the dungeon’s awareness. When one dies the others know how it died." He looked up. "You adapted."
"I had to."
"That’s the assessment." Han Dori looked at the tablet. "Threat perception, output consistency, decision adaptation under changed conditions. All three. Run three complete."
He extended his hand.
Kai shook it.
"Licensing board gets the full assessment today," Han Dori said. "Processing window is forty-eight hours minimum. But given the pre-application intent filing and the backdating precedent , you should have provisional status by end of week."
Kai nodded.
Han Dori looked at him for a moment.
"The canyon dungeon," he said. "Forty-one minutes. I looked up the original assessment record. The timestamp discrepancy is documented in the assessor’s raw notes. It never made it into the official record."
Kai looked at him.
"I filed a correction request with the board this morning," Han Dori said. "Historical assessment amendment. It takes time but it’ll go through." A pause. "She should know the correct number is on record somewhere."
Kai stood with that for a second.
"Thank you," he said.
Han Dori picked up his bag. "Come to the office Thursday. We’ll go through the provisional license together. Make sure the backdating request goes through at issuance."
"Thursday," Kai confirmed.
He walked to the train station.
’Forty-one minutes,’ he thought, on the platform. ’Filed. On record. Somewhere.’
The train came.
He got on.
=====
He was home by five.
He hung his bag on the hook.
From the living room — Shira’s rhythm, the deliberate quality. She was at the window.
From Mira’s room — still. The audio reader low.
He went to the kitchen. Started the specialty rotation — Shira’s blend today. He was faster at the preparation now. The market woman’s handwritten schedule was memorized.
Shira came to the kitchen doorway.
She looked at him. Then at the bag on the hook. Then at his shoulder.
"You’re favouring your left," she said.
"Barely."
"Show me."
"It’s fine."
"Kai."
He turned. She was looking at him with the expression that meant she had already decided she was going to see it regardless of what he said.
He pulled the collar aside. The protective layer had a surface compression mark where the impact had been. No bruising underneath. The skin was clean.
Shira looked at it.
"Glancing hit," she said.
"Yes."
"Second monster."
"Yes. It watched the first one go down and adjusted its approach."
She looked at the compression mark for another moment. Then she looked at his face.
"The living dungeon shares awareness across its monsters," she said. "When one dies the others learn from it. You need to change your approach between targets. Don’t use the same entry angle twice."
"I figured that out inside."
"Figure it out before next time."
"There isn’t a next time. Three runs, I’m done."
She looked at the window.
"For now," she said.
’For now,’ he thought. Not a correction. Not a disagreement. Just for now.
He turned back to the stove.
"Run three complete," he said. "Han Dori submits the assessment today. Provisional license by end of week."
Shira was quiet for a moment.
"Good," she said.
She went back to the window.
’Good.’ That was all she was going to give him. He knew that. He wasn’t expecting anything else.
’She said good,’ he thought. ’That’s enough.’
He started the second component of the specialty blend.
========
Mira came out for dinner.
She navigated to her chair, found her bowl, sat. She had the whiteboard in her lap but she wasn’t reaching for the marker.
They ate.
Halfway through, Kai said: "Run three. I passed."
Mira’s hand went to the marker.
She wrote something and held it up.
We know. Shira told me.
Kai looked at Shira.
Shira was eating. Looking at her bowl.
"When did you tell her," Kai said.
"An hour ago," Shira said, to her bowl. "She asked."
Kai looked at Mira.
Mira’s board came up again.
She came to my door. First time she’s done that.
Shira’s jaw set.
"I was passing," Shira said. "Her door was open."
Her door was not open.
"It was slightly open."
It was not slightly open.
"I knocked," Shira said, with the precision of someone placing a very specific word.
Mira lowered the board. She ate a spoonful of porridge with the expression of someone who had made their point.
