Investing In My Crippled Heroine Wives For Infinite Rebate
Chapter 48 | Districts
Chapter 48: Chapter 48 | Districts
He found it on a Wednesday afternoon three weeks ago.
He had been passing a secondhand shop two districts over not looking for anything, just cutting through when the window display caught him. A stack of books arranged badly, spines out. One of them dark green with gold lettering, the corner of the cover slightly bent.
He almost kept walking.
’Principles of Combat Theory: Applied Gift Mechanics,’ he thought. ’Third edition.’
He stood there for a second on the pavement with people moving around him.
Then he went in.
He paid four hundred coins for it. The shopkeeper wrapped it in brown paper without being asked, which Kai thought was unnecessarily formal for a secondhand book but he didn’t say so.
He carried it home in his bag for three days without doing anything about it.
’She might not want it,’ he thought, on the third night. ’She might throw it across the room.’
He left it outside her door on the tray anyway. No note. No knock. Just the book.
Then he went to the couch and lay down and stared at the ceiling.
’Four hundred coins,’ he thought. ’If she throws it I’ve spent four hundred coins to insult someone.’
He fell asleep before he could finish worrying about it.
=====
Morning.
He knocked on both doors at seven and went back to the kitchen.
Mira came out first. Found her chair. Sat.
He knocked on Shira’s door.
Longer pause than usual.
"Coming," she said.
She came out ninety seconds later.
Her hair was different. Not dramatically — just slightly off. Pulled back quickly, not the way she usually had it, a little loose on one side like she’d done it in a hurry and not checked.
Kai’s brain registered this before he told it not to.
He turned back to the stove.
He poured her tea and set the bowl in front of her and said — nothing. He meant to say something normal. Good morning or food’s ready or any of the dozen unremarkable things he said every morning.
Instead he said: "The oscillation reading."
Shira looked up from her bowl.
"On the dust wraiths," he said. "Third one shifted about ten degrees. I compensated during instead of before."
A pause.
"I know," Shira said. "I already told you not to do that."
"I know. I’m telling you I did it anyway."
She looked at her bowl.
"Why are you telling me this at breakfast."
"Because I was thinking about it."
She picked up her spoon.
’That was not what I was thinking about,’ Kai thought. ’What is wrong with me.’
He sat down and ate.
Mira had her spoon halfway to her mouth. She set it down. Picked up her marker.
The board came up.
Your hair is different.
Shira’s spoon stopped.
"Eat your breakfast, Mira."
The board came up again.
It looks nice.
"I will remove your bowl."
Mira put the board down and picked up her spoon with the expression of someone who had already won.
Kai ate his rice.
’She definitely read the book,’ he thought. ’She’s been up since before I woke up and she’s pretending she hasn’t and I started talking about oscillation readings because I panicked.’
He drank his tea.
The board appeared again, aimed at neither of them specifically.
He panicked.
"Mira," Shira said, very quietly.
It was sweet.
Shira set her spoon down and looked at Mira directly.
Mira was already eating. Deeply focused on her porridge. Fascinated by her porridge. The porridge was the most interesting thing that had ever existed.
Kai looked at his bowl.
’Do not smile,’ he told himself. ’You live here. You cannot smile at this.’
He smiled. He hid it in his tea. He was approximately forty percent successful.

[Author -I skipped Run Two ,since I think it will feel like I am purposely making the story longer ]
Run three was that afternoon.
Han Dori met him at the Kellith organic dungeon entrance at two o’clock , a different gate from the tunnel runs, smaller building, older infrastructure. The gate official looked like he’d been working there since the dungeon was classified.
"Living dungeon," Han Dori said, checking Kai’s gear the way he always did. Hands, collar, resonance dampener calibration. "Different from what you’ve done. The passages respond to presence. You walk in, it knows."
"How does it know."
"Feels like a pressure change. Like something turned its head to look at you." He adjusted the dampener by a fraction. "Your Nerve Sense is going to pick up the dungeon itself as a living entity. That’s normal. Don’t panic."
"I don’t panic."
Han Dori looked at him.
"I haven’t panicked yet," Kai said.
"Go," Han Dori said.
======
Kai stepped through the gate and felt it not through the walls or the floor but through the air itself, a slow pulse like something breathing very far away. The passages were organic, the walls slightly warm, the floor giving faintly under his boots like packed earth rather than stone.
He pressed his palm to the nearest wall.
It pulsed back.
’Okay,’ he thought. ’That’s unsettling.’
He expanded the Nerve Sense.
The dungeon mapped differently from the caverns. Everything alive meant everything broadcasting , the walls, the ceiling, the junction points where passages branched. He filtered it down. Focused on what was separate from the dungeon’s own rhythm.
Two presences. Chamber ahead, left branch.
He moved.
====
The first junction node was easy to find Mira had told him what to listen for. The resonance frequency where organic passages branched was distinct. A different pitch from the surrounding tissue. He hit it on the first pass with the Gale Strike rotation and felt the dungeon’s defensive response slow the way Han Dori had described. Like something flinching.
’Good,’ he thought. ’Flinch.’
The first monster came from the ceiling.
He hadn’t been tracking ceiling.
’Track ceiling,’ he noted, for later.
It dropped fast , a dungeon crawler, organic and low to the ground when it landed, four limbs and a shell of hardened dungeon tissue. The Nerve Sense read the impact a half second before it landed and he was already moving left.
