Chapter 50: Chapter 50 | Good News

Kai looked at both of them.

’Shira went to Mira’s door to tell her I passed the run,’ he thought. ’That is what happened.’

He ate his rice.

He kept everything off his face.

He was not entirely successful but neither of them were looking at him so it didn’t matter.

After dinner he washed the dishes.

Mira went back to her room.

Shira stayed at the table.

He heard her behind him ,the particular sound of her not leaving. He finished the last bowl and dried his hands.

He sat down across from her.

She was looking at the table.

"The book," she said.

He waited.

"It was one of four editions." She said it the way she said the forty-one minutes. Flat. Pre-processed into something she’d already decided not to feel about. "The third edition has the corrected calculations in Chapter seven. The first and second editions have an error in the wind pressure formulas that went unnoticed for three years."

"I know," Kai said. "That’s why I got the third."

She looked at him.

"You checked editions," she said.

"I checked editions."

She looked at the table again.

There was a long quiet.

Then she said still to the table, still with the flatness "I left it on the tray when I was done."

"Done with what."

"Reading it."

He had given it to her last night. She had read the entire thing overnight.

He looked at the table too.

"I know," he said. "I saw it this morning."

She nodded once.

That was the whole conversation about it.

She turned her chair and went to her room.

Kai sat at the empty table for a moment.

’She read it overnight,’ he thought. ’Third edition. Corrected calculations.’

He pressed his palm flat on the table.

Both rhythms. Both present. Shira settling toward sleep. Mira’s audio reader low.

He opened his notebook.

He wrote: Run three complete. Assessment filed. Provisional license by end of week. Han Dori filed historical correction for the canyon record.

He looked at that last line.

He added: Forty-one minutes. On record now.

He closed the notebook.

He went to the couch and lay down.

The system chimed.

Kai read it.

He put the phone down.

He pressed both palms to the cushion.

Shira’s rhythm settling. The deliberate quality giving way to something quieter.

Mira’s rhythm — the audio reader. And then he caught it through the Resonance Echo, the frequency his ear found before his brain did a sustained hum. Six seconds. Her Gift’s base note. Cleaner than the night before.

She stopped herself.

But it had been six seconds. Longest yet.

’She’s trying,’ he thought. ’Both of you. Every night.’

He lay back on the couch.

Margin notes, he thought. Three of them. In her handwriting.

He stared at the ceiling.

’I’m not going to look at them,’ he decided. ’That’s hers.’

He closed his eyes.

He was asleep in minutes.

Thursday.

Kai was up at five.

He pressed his palm to the floor before he was fully awake. Both rhythms. Shira had been up for a while the deliberate quality, the small practiced movements. Mira was still sleeping, her rhythm deep and even.

He made tea.

He left a cup outside each door without knocking.

Then he sat on the couch with his own cup and the notebook and went through what he knew about the backdating request. Denko’s exact words: you have to request it at the moment they issue the license. Before you leave the building. Before anything else.

He wrote it down even though he had already written it down twice.

Then he wrote: Han Dori’s office. 10am. Don’t forget.

He looked at that.

’I’m not going to forget,’ he thought. ’I’ve been thinking about nothing else for three weeks.’

He closed the notebook.

Breakfast was rice and eggs and the specialty rotation — Mira’s optical blend.

Shira came out first. Positioned herself at the table. Looked at her bowl.

She picked up her spoon.

"Thursday," she said.

"Yes," Kai said.

"Han Dori."

"Ten."

She ate.

That was the whole conversation about it. Kai didn’t know whether to be relieved or slightly unnerved by how efficiently she had processed the information.

Mira came out slower than usual. She navigated to her chair, found the bowl, sat. She had the whiteboard but she hadn’t uncapped the marker.
