Chapter 94: Serah’s Modifications, Pylon Three Fails

  • Next Chapter

"Stop," she said. "Something is wrong."

Alvian released the Molecular Forge. The pylon stood for another three seconds before the fracture widened and the whole thing split down the middle. Two halves clattered against the cracked floor.

"Shit," Tobias said from across the chamber. He had been stacking debris and turned at the sound of failing metal. "What happened?"

Serah was already at the broken pylon, her circuitry pad scanning the fracture surface. Her expression was intense. Not frustration. Recognition. "I know what went wrong. Let me see the data from the first two pylons."

She pulled up her recordings. The pad displayed molecular schematics of both successful pylons, overlaid with Essence flow patterns she had tracked during construction. Her eyes moved between the data and the broken pylon’s remains.

"The crystal lattice," she said. "It needs to be aligned with the copper’s grain structure. Not perpendicular to it. In the first two, the alignment happened to be compatible because I specified random orientation and got lucky. In the third, the alignment was perpendicular."

She turned to Alvian. "You can control molecules, but not their orientation. The Molecular Forge gives you positional control. It does not give you rotational control. That requires understanding how Essence flows through crystalline structures, how alignment affects conductivity, how the angles between materials’ grain patterns determine whether energy amplifies or cancels."

The error was obvious in retrospect. He had been treating molecules like building blocks. Stack them in the right position and the structure works. But molecules were not just positions. They had orientation. And orientation mattered.

"Show me," he said.

For the next four hours, Serah became the architect and Alvian became the hands. She specified the molecular orientations for each component. Crystal lattice aligned to copper grain at seventeen degrees. Copper grain aligned to iron framework at thirty-four degrees. Essence core oriented with its primary conductivity axis pointing toward the central focus location.

Alvian adjusted his Molecular Forge technique. The reformation process became more nuanced. He was not just placing atoms. He was rotating them, aligning them, creating structures where every molecule worked together instead of against itself.

The third pylon, rebuilt with corrected alignment, activated with a pure hum instead of a crack. The difference was audible. The first two pylons had hummed at slightly different frequencies. This one hummed at exactly the same frequency as the second, creating a resonance that was beginning to build.

The fourth pylon went faster. The fifth. The sixth. Each one took shape more quickly as the coordination between architect and forger tightened. Serah would point to a schematic section on her pad. Alvian would adjust the forge parameters. The pylon would take shape correctly. No words needed.

By the seventh pylon, they had a rhythm. Tobias had finished clearing debris and was testing the completed pylons, his new arm pressing against their surfaces to feel the resonance. His delver’s instinct, honed by decades of reading Essence infrastructure in the Warrens, gave him a practical sense that Serah’s scientific analysis could not replicate.

"These are not just conductors," Tobias observed. He placed his new hand flat against the seventh pylon’s surface. The crawler crystal joints in his arm resonated with the pylon’s stored energy. "They are amplifiers. Each one boosts the signal from the next. When you link them all together, the final output will be exponentially stronger than the individual components."

"That is the design," Serah confirmed without looking up from her pad.

"No, I mean, you do not understand. I have worked with Essence infrastructure for thirty years. Standard amplifiers have a cap. Linear scaling. These do not. The cascade effect here is multiplicative. If you get all twelve linked, the output will be something nobody has ever seen before."

Alvian paused at the eighth pylon site. His Essence had dropped to 107. Each pylon cost roughly twenty Essence, and the failed third had cost an extra twenty for the rebuild. He was running low.

"Eight down," he said. "Four to go. Plus the central focus and the circuit integration."

"You need to rest," Serah said. "Your Essence is below half."

"I can push further."

"Your molecular precision degrades when your Essence drops below one hundred. I can see it in the eighth pylon’s crystal alignment. It is off by point three degrees." She held up her pad. "If you continue without resting, the ninth will fail like the third did. And we do not have time to rebuild another."

She was right. He confirmed it. The precision degradation was measurable. Not dangerous yet, but trending wrong.

"Thirty minutes," he said.

"Forty-five," Serah countered. "Your Essence regenerates at roughly two point five per minute. In forty-five minutes, you will recover about one hundred twelve Essence. Enough to finish the remaining pylons with a buffer."

Tobias sat on a stack of cleared debris, his new arm resting on his knee. "I will keep watch. The patrol does not come through here, but if dimensional residue attracts anything, I will hear it first."

Alvian sat on the cracked floor. The eight completed pylons hummed around him in a half-circle, their resonance building with each addition. The sound was like a chord being assembled one note at a time. Four more notes and the chord would be complete.

Serah sat beside him. Not touching. Close enough that her SunFire warmth pressed against his Clearwater chill. The same way she had sat in the cache room when they were hiding from the King’s guards.

"The third pylon failure was my fault," she said quietly.

"How?"

"I should have specified molecular orientation from the beginning. I assumed random alignment would work because standard construction does not require precise crystalline orientation. But your Molecular Forge does not work like standard construction. It works at a level where molecular orientation matters."

"Then the failure was useful. We learned something."

"I know. But I should have known before you wasted twenty Essence on a broken pylon." She was quiet for a moment. "I keep forgetting that your power requires a different kind of knowledge than what I learned at the Academy. The old rules do not apply. I am having to write new ones as we go."

’She keeps trying to understand what I am. Not the System. Not the power. What I am.’

"You are doing fine," Alvian said.

"I am doing adequate. There is a difference." She pulled up her pad, displaying the molecular orientation schematics she had been developing. "When we finish the pylons, the central focus will require all three aspects of your Talent working together. Clearwater for dissolution. The Reformation aspect for rebuilding. And something else. Something I cannot quantify. The dimensional interface between your Talent and the crystal substrate."

"You will figure it out."

"I will. But I wanted to say, thank you. For trusting me with this." She did not look at him. Her eyes stayed on the pad. "Most people would not let a scientist dissect their power. You let me watch. You let me help. You let me fail and learn."

"You are not dissecting my power. You are helping me understand it."

"Same thing." A pause. "Different thing. I am not sure which yet."

The forty-five minutes passed. The pylons hummed. The stars moved overhead through the holes in the ceiling. Alvian’s Essence climbed slowly back toward functional levels.

[DING!]

[Essence regeneration: 45 minutes elapsed]

[Essence: 107 → 219]

[Ready for continued construction]

Alvian stood. Four pylons remaining. The creation wheel hummed. Serah moved to the ninth chalk mark. Tobias watched the shadows. The medical wing’s ruins settled around them, broken walls becoming a workshop, destruction becoming the foundation for something new.

"Mark nine," he said. "I am ready."

The Molecular Forge activated. Iron dissolved. Copper flowed. Crystal aligned.

Four more to go.
