Chapter 95: The Conductive Substrate, Foundation Stones
Eight pylons hummed in a half-circle across the cracked floor.
The sound was changing. Each pylon added was another note in a chord that hadn’t been played in three centuries. The resonance was building, the individual frequencies beginning to cascade into something larger than the sum of its parts.
But the chord was incomplete. Four pylons remained, and more importantly, the heart of the array was missing.
"We need the central focus," Alvian said, wiping molecular residue from his palms. "Without it, the pylons are just twelve humming spires pointing at nothing."
Serah looked up from her pad. "The focus requires dimensional crystal. Pure. Large. Oriented along a single axis." She scrolled through the molecular specifications she had been building. "Rank 3 Essence cores won’t work. They’re condensed energy. We need raw crystal."
"The Magnus stockpile is exhausted." Tobias kicked an empty crate. The wood splintered against his new arm. "We used the last of the alloy rods on pylon eight."
Alvian ran the calculations. Raw dimensional crystal. Rare in post-Cataclysm construction. Found in pre-Cataclysm architecture or deep Warrens excavations. The Academy itself was pre-Cataclysm construction.
’The original builders would have used dimensional crystal as foundation anchors. Buildings rooted in dimensional energy. Self-repairing infrastructure. The Cataclysm severed the connection, but the crystal would still be there.’
"Sub-basement," he said.
Tobias turned. "What?"
"The Academy’s foundation. Pre-Cataclysm builders lined it with dimensional crystal. Anchor stones for the building’s Essence infrastructure." He looked at the old scavenger. "You said the medical wing’s sub-basement has intact drainage. What else is down there?"
Tobias’s eyes narrowed. Then widened. "The foundation wall. I saw it during the drainage survey. Slabs of something that looked like crystal but felt different. I thought it was decorative." He scratched his jaw. "Three hundred years of absorbing ambient Essence. If those are dimensional crystal anchor stones..."
"They’re saturated."
"Completely."
The access hatch was fifty meters from the central chamber. A steel grate set into the floor, covered in rubble that Tobias cleared with three sweeps of his enhanced arm. The grate itself was corrosion-locked, but Alvian dissolved the hinges with a touch and the hatch swung open.
The smell hit first. Chemical. Thick. Dissolved concrete and standing water and something older underneath, something that smelled like time. The ladder down was intact but slick with moisture.
Serah went first, her circuitry pad casting blue light into the darkness. Tobias followed. Alvian came last, pulling the hatch closed above him to prevent light leakage.
The sub-basement was cramped. Broken pipes lined the ceiling at head-bashing height. Standing water pooled ankle-deep, dark and still. The walls were raw concrete, scarred by three centuries of dimensional pressure.
Except where they weren’t.
"Gods," Serah breathed.
The foundation wall ran the length of the sub-basement. Forty meters of exposed dimensional crystal, cut into slabs a meter square, set into the wall like bricks. The surfaces were pitted by age, scarred by dimensional residue, but structurally intact.
The crystal hummed. Alvian felt it through his feet, through his hands, through his bones. Three hundred years of absorbed Essence, stored in a lattice that hadn’t been touched since the Cataclysm.
’This is more than enough. More than I need. More than I could use in a hundred forging operations.’
"Which one?" Tobias asked.
Alvian walked along the wall, his Clearwater resonance reaching out to touch each slab. They were all saturated, but some were denser than others. Some had absorbed more dimensional memory. Some had been positioned closer to the original Essence conduits and had accumulated more data.
The largest slab sat at the wall’s center. Two meters wide, one meter tall, half a meter deep. Its surface was scarred but its structure was flawless. When his awareness touched it, the crystal responded. Recognition. Welcome.
’Hello to you too.’
"This one."
He knelt before the slab and activated Molecular Forge.
The sensation was different from working with iron or copper. Those materials were simple. Straightforward. This crystal was ancient. Its molecular structure was layered, each layer holding three centuries of dimensional data. Dissolving its connective bonds to the foundation wall was like untangling a knot that had been tied for three hundred years.
Bond by bond. Layer by layer. The crystal’s edges softened where it met the wall, the molecular connections dissolving into component particles that dispersed into the standing water.
The slab began to separate.
And the wall began to groan.
Tobias shouted first. "Ceiling!"
Alvian’s Danger Sense screamed. He looked up. A support beam, eight meters above, was buckling. The dimensional crystal slab hadn’t just been anchored to the wall. It had been load-bearing. Removing it transferred stress to the beam, and the beam couldn’t handle the weight.
Cracks spread across the ceiling. Dust fell. Water dripped faster from broken pipes.
Alvian didn’t hesitate. He redirected the Molecular Forge from extraction to reinforcement. The buckling beam was iron, old and corroded, its molecular structure weakened by three centuries of moisture. He dissolved it.
Not destroyed. Dissolved. The iron broke down into component molecules. Then he rebuilt it. Denser. Stronger. He pulled carbon from the standing water, from the dissolved concrete, from the organic matter in the air, and wove it into the iron’s crystalline structure.
Steel. He was making steel.
The beam solidified in its original position, but now it was three times as dense, its molecular structure compacted and carbon-reinforced. It wouldn’t buckle again.

[The System also notes that almost being crushed by a ceiling is exciting.]
[The System could have done without the excitement.]
"Move," Serah shouted from behind her pad. "The stress transfer has propagated. There’s a second beam showing strain."
Alvian was already moving. The Molecular Forge reached the second beam before it began to buckle. Same process. Dissolve. Add carbon. Rebuild. The beam solidified with a deep thrum that vibrated through the sub-basement.
The ceiling held.
The crystal slab, now fully separated from the wall, floated in Alvian’s molecular grip. Two meters of ancient dimensional crystal, saturated with three centuries of Essence and dimensional memory. It hummed against his awareness like a sleeping heart.
"That was close," Tobias said. His mechanical arm was raised, ready to catch falling debris that hadn’t come. "Next time, check if it’s load-bearing before you dissolve it."
"Noted."
They climbed back to the central chamber. The crystal slab floated between Alvian’s palms, guided by molecular manipulation. It was heavy in his awareness, dense with data, three hundred years of dimensional absorption compressed into a lattice of perfect order.
The eight completed pylons hummed louder when the crystal entered the chamber. Recognition. The pylons were iron and copper and Rank 3 cores. The crystal was ancient dimensional anchor stone. They were built to work together. Three centuries of separation ended in a ruined medical wing.
Serah positioned the slab at the array’s center, where the blueprint specified. The chalk marks on the floor formed a circle around it. Twelve points marked where the remaining pylons would stand.
"The substrate is secured," she said, scanning the crystal’s Essence saturation. Her pad’s readings made her blink. "Alvian, this crystal has absorbed more dimensional data than the entire Academy sensor array has recorded in its operational history. The memory density is off the scale."
"Good."
"It’s not good, it’s terrifying. This crystal remembers things that happened before the Cataclysm. If we integrate it with your Talent, the focus won’t just read patient templates. It will read dimensional templates. Pre-Cataclysm dimensional templates."
She looked at him. "This isn’t just a healing focus anymore. This is a dimensional archive that heals people."
Alvian set the slab in position. The floor beneath it had been cleared by Tobias. The crystal settled into its place with a sound like a key turning in a lock.
’One piece closer. The heart is in position. Now it just needs to be forged into something that can beat.’

[The System notes that extraction almost killed the Host.]
[The System also notes that the Host solved the problem through creation rather than destruction.]
[This is significant.]
[The System is documenting this pattern for later analysis.]
